Indian-Detours - Off the Beaten Track (1935) ORIGINAL Design by Fred Harvey

Lot # 5

Very good condition, brochure. Fred Harvey was known for pioneering the art of commercial cultural tourism. "Indian Detours" were meant to provide an authentic Native Ame...morerican experience by having actors stage a certain lifestyle in the desert in order to sell tickets to unwitting tourists. Harvey operated a chain of restaurants, hotels, and gift shops along the Santa Fe Railroad. The company, which was known for its high standards of service, played a major role in popularizing tourism to the American West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Fred Harvey also helped to establish the first Indian Detours, which were tours of the Southwest that focused on the region's Native American culture.
