Indian-Detours - Off the Beaten Track (1935) ORIGINAL Design by Fred Harvey Lot #5 (Sale Order 4 of 46) Very good condition, brochure. Fred Harvey was known for pioneering the art of commercial cultural tourism. "Indian Detours" were meant to provide an authentic Native American experience by having actors stage a certain lifestyle in the desert in order to sell tickets to unwitting tourists. Harvey operated a chain of restaurants, hotels, and gift shops along the Santa Fe Railroad. The company, which was known for its high standards of service, played a major role in popularizing tourism to the American West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Fred Harvey also helped to establish the first Indian Detours, which were tours of the Southwest that focused on the region's Native American culture.

Published by V. Devaux et cie (1867). Philippe de Commines was a 15th century writer and courtier from the Low Countries. He is best known for his memoirs, "The Memoirs of Philip de Commines," which provide a detailed and valuable account of the political and social events of his time, particularly during the reigns of Louis XI of France and Charles the Bold of Burgundy. He also wrote a book on the art of war "On the Ordinances of War".

He is best known for his illustrations of classic literature, particularly the works of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Thomas Hardy. Good to Very good condition. Has BOOKPLATE FROM THOMAS FOREST BETTON who helped raise troops at the start of the War, and was appointed Captain, Company G , 4th Reserves on 29 May 1861. He was wounded in action (30 June 1861) on the Peninsula Campaign, and fought at Second Bull Run. Additionally we know this was his because a additional bookplate list Germantown PA where he was born.

Ossian is the narrator and purported author of a cycle of epic poems from Scotland and Ireland that were published in the 18th century. The poems, which were written in a style reminiscent of ancient epics, describe the heroic deeds of ancient Gaelic warriors and the beauty of the natural landscape. They were said to have been translated from ancient Gaelic texts by James Macpherson.

The first two editions of Leaves of Grass were self-published by Whitman. This was the first widely available edition. The publisher went bankrupt after a second printing. This is a very scarce copy in the original cloth of this landmark collection of American poetry.
