An important breast- and back-plate with Medici coat of arms

Lot # 463 (Sale Order: 463 of 1025)

dating: last quarter of the 16th Century, provenance: Tuscany, Breast-plate ribbed at the centre, with twisted neckline and gussets; the entire surface engraved with bands depicting warriors, mythical figures and geometrical motifs. At the centre two medallions surmounting the effigy of St. John the Baptist. The leather straps and some of the rivets have been restored. The back-plate worked en suite, featuring the emblem of the Order of Saint Stephen and the coat of arms of Medici. The emblem on the back features the coat of arms of the Medici (five balls and a sixth ball with lilies) surmounted by a crown with fleur-de-lis, together with the cross of the Order of Saint Stephen (eight pointed cross); therefore we invite you to see the so called Palazzo della Carovana in Knights' Square, Pisa, built (by restoring a medieval building) in 1562–1564 by Giorgio Vasari for the headquarters of the Knights of St. Stephen. On the entrance is a sculpture that can be compared to the group engraved on the plate, featuring the Medici coat of arms and the cross of St. Stephen within the same shield. We are likely to think that the breast- and back-plate offered is a very scarce piece from the glorious origins of the Order., , dimensions: height circa 42 cm.
