A fine engraved round shield

dating: 16th Century, provenance: Northern Italy, Circular, convex, iron shield, at the centre a cusp of square section with knotted knot; from the base of the cusp depart six rayed bands, outlined and engraved with racemes, grotesque, vases and flowers, each band featuring slight variations on the ornamental elements. Each band frames six wedges sectors featuring a medallion each, placed in the upper part, each medallion depicts the effigy of a character, different for every slice; in the lower portion there is always a scene, different for every section, featuring the effigy of various characters, as knights and ladies. The external circle is engraved with a series of trophies of arms, parts of armour, lions, cannons, musical instruments and more. On the surface small damages and some pitting. The border provided with a row of brass rivets (probably later), and a thick, twisted roping. Dark patina on the back, provided with two loops.Provenance: Sotheby's sale n. 61, June 18th 1974, from the Collection of the Tower of London., , dimensions: diameter 57 cm.
