dating: mid-19th Century, provenance: France, Octagonal, rifled, 11 mm cal. barrels, keeping 40% of the antique finishing, provided with foresight, signed "DEVISME A PARIS", featuring floral engravings at the base; the breeches finely engraved with flowers and rocaille, the tangs engraved with floral motifs and net, also provided with sight notch. Forward spring locks, the plate engraved with rocaille, flowers and net at the centre, and shell at the edge, the hammers engraved en suite (one of the hammers features a small restoration on the lever); ebony full stocks chiselled at the nozzle, at the back and along the sides with floral pattern, and grooved, both numbered "10534". Iron mounts, trigger guards with finger support, butt-plates with long, moulded button, floral engravings. In their case of dark wood with brass mounts, lined with dark green velvet, on the cover the writing "36 BOULEVART DES ITALIENS / DEVISME / ARQUEBUSIER BREVETE / A PARIS" imprinted in gold; complete with all tools: hammer, screwdriver, ramrod, bullet mould, two boxes and key., , dimensions: length 40,5 cm.

An outstanding cased breech-loading percussion pistol with removable butt by Schilling

dating: mid-19th Century, provenance: Germany, Octagonal, rifled, 12 mm cal. barrel of fine damask, slightly bell-mouthed at the nozzle, signed "V. CHR. SCHILLING IN SUHL" in gold, provided with precision foresight. Rectangular frame featuring fine engravings; depicting on a side the effigy of a soldier with his crossbow, at the top a man by a fire in the highland and another man spying him (a bandit?) hidden behind the rocks, the rest decorated with floral motifs; on the right side a blued lever opening the loading gate hammer placed at the lower part with safety lock. Grip of briarwood carved with masks and floral motifs framing the checkered area, trigger guard with curl and finger support engraved with floral motifs, iron butt-plate with drum with cover decorated with the effigy of a man with crossbow. Briarwood removable butt engraved en suite, with iron mounts engraved with floral motifs. In a fruitwood case lined with green cloth; complete with all tools and key.Valentin Christoph Schilling is known because of the outstanding quality of his works. See "Der Neue Stoeckel", vol. A matchlock rifle

dating: late 16th Century, provenance: Swiss, Octagonal, 15 mm cal. barrel, with helical rifling featuring sixteen spirals, at the breech a stamp depicting a snake wrapped in four coils, with crowned head (probably the coat of arms of Danner Family, Nuremberg XVI sec (see Stockel, 1943, vol II, n° 5851), near the tang a oval, unclear mark; flat, archaic lock, at the centre the cross-shaped spring stopper, pan with spark-arrester and sliding cover with leaf-shaped handle, serpentine shaped as a dragon head with the original screw to fix the match; walnut full stock coloured in black, featuring the coat of arms of Geneva on the counter-plate side; arched lever, squared and then round, rounded at the girdle, ending in a baluster. Wooden ramrod. Rust damages at the iron components. Bibliography: José A. An important matchlock petronel with Turkish barrel

Lot # 874 (Sale Order: 874 of 1025)      

dating: last quarter of the 16th Century, provenance: Saxony, Interesting, Turkish, smooth, four-stage, 15 mm cal. barrel, contemporary to the butt; octagonal at the fist part decorated with lateral grooves, featuring inscriptions in Arabic characters on the back, with brass rings at the girdle, the second part is decorated with twisted grooves becoming straight at the edge, the third part, framed by rings, features beautiful, floral engravings and keeps remains of gilding, the last segment is round, with longitudinal grooves and slightly thickened nozzle, provided with foresight; screwed-in tang; on the right the pan with spark arrester featuring the sight. Matchlock with rectangular, serpentine with screw and end shaped as dragon head. Wooden full stock richly decorated with bone inlays and plaques, engraved with floral motifs and partially coloured in green (small parts missing). The counter-plate with winged lion, on the back of the butt a heraldic coat of arms featuring a cross and four "eyes" (crescent?) under a compass; long, curved iron trigger (turn-off!). Wooden ramrod with engraved, bone tip.Charming and beautiful, very scarce weapon. We have knowledge of a limited number of similar pieces, such pieces are featured in the biggest collection of the world; see a petronel in the collection of the Tower of London (No. XII.12 and XII.13), another in Kienbusch Collection, New York (n. 635). None of them has a barrel as important as the lot offered above., , dimensions: length 122 cm.
