Rare Engraved Burgess Repeating Shotgun

Lot # 30 (Sale Order: 31 of 672)

Very Rare and Possibly Unique Engraved Burgess Slide-Action Repeating Shotgun, NVSN. 12 ga. 28'' Damascus barrel is engraved on top with Burgess patents from 1883 to 189...more2. Takedown receiver, bolt, triggerguard, upper tang and slide were left in the white, then engraved with elaborate scroll patterns and fancy borders. Top of bolt is engraved ''Buffalo N.Y., Burgess Gun Co., U.S.A.'' Similar treatment made to the iron sleeve over the stock wrist, which actuates the repeating action. Wood is above average walnut, oil finished and checkered in a pattern considered complex in 1890. There is also an original Bakelite ''Burgess Gun Co.'' buttplate. Mfg'd early 1890s. Condition is antique good to very good, with most of the barrel Damascus pattern visible and all the engraving recognizable. There is significant frosting on the white metal, but not enough to obscure the engraving. Wood has numerous handling marks and gouges, but no splits or fractures. There are two repairs -- one is a crossbolt through the forend for strengthening, the other a brazing repair to the shell lifter mechanism. Note: There were several Burgess guns that were specially engraved for display at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, and a couple are on display at the Cody Firearms Museum, as they went to Winchester upon their purchase of Burgess in 1899. This may have been one of those display guns and warrants additional research. Est.: $1,500-$3,000. (Antique)

''Colt Frontier Six-Shooter'' 1878 Double Action Frontier Revolver

Lot # 34 (Sale Order: 35 of 672)

''Colt Frontier Six-Shooter'' Model 1878 Double Action Colt Frontier Cartridge Revolver, #5854, .44-40 CF cal., 7.5'' round barrel marked ''Colt's Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co. Hart...moreford, CT. U.S.A.'' in one line, rear of left frame with ''Rampant Colt'' encircled logo, full nickel-plated finish, blued hammer with polished sides in the ''white'', blued trigger and screws; two-piece mother-of-pearl ''bird's head'' grips. Matching visible serial numbers are ''5854'' on bottom of grip ahead of lanyard loop and ''854'' on the loading gate; ''B'', ''I'' and ''8-5-4'' are stamped between each bore on rear of cylinder. Mfg'd 1881. Left side of barrel has the ''Colt Frontier Six-Shooter'' stamping; a corresponding ''44 C.F.'' designation appears in tiny numbers on left front triggerguard bow above the number ''5''. A 2008-dated Colt factory letter accompanying this revolver states that it was shipped to Hartley and Graham, New York City, on June 7, 1881 in a shipment of 10 guns, and confirms all the above features but for the grips, which doubtless were added by H&G at the time. Engraved Colt Model 1878 Double Action Frontier Revolver

Lot # 37 (Sale Order: 38 of 672)

Engraved Colt Model 1878 Double Action Frontier Cartridge Revolver, with holster, #7264, .44-40 CF cal., 5.5'' round barrel marked ''Colt's Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co. Hartford, C...moreT. U.S.A.'' in one line, full nickel-plated finish, two-piece ivory ''bird's head'' grips. Visible serial number ''7264'' appears on bottom of grip straps ahead of lanyard loop; loading gate is unmarked; the numbers ''2-6-4'' are stamped between each bore on rear of cylinder. Engraving on backstrap is barely legible but appears to read “R.H. Ward to N.S. Ward, San Antonio, Tex., Apr. 85”. Mfg'd. 1881. Left front triggerguard bow has the ''44 C.F.'' designation in tiny numbers. A 2013-dated Colt factory letter accompanying this revolver states that it was shipped to Hartley and Graham, New York City, on Dec. 31, 1881 in a shipment of 60 guns, and states that it left the factory with a 7.5'' barrel, blued finish and grips ''Not Listed''. It is likely that H&G shortened the barrel to the present 5.5'' and had the gun engraved in a loose scrolling-vine ''New York'' style at the time. The ivory grips may have been added then as well, although the number ''64'' is written in pencil inside the left panel. Condition is fine, retaining approx. 80% nickel plate showing erosion mainly at right side of frame and in cylinder flutes. Markings are very good, engraving is mostly sharp. Ivory grips are without cracks, have a small loss along right backstrap, and show excellent coloration. Action is smooth and tight but cylinder does not lock up at full cock; bore is very good with defined rifling. Holster is unmarked but shows quality workmanship with deep floral carving and an early American Indian symbol on the Mexican loop. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (Antique)

''D.F.C.'' Inspected Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 38 (Sale Order: 39 of 672)

''D.F.C.'' Inspected Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Cartridge Revolver, #61358, .45 Colt CF cal., 7.5'' round barrel marked ''Colt's Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co. Hartford, CT. ...moreU.S.A.'' in one line, left frame with three-line 1871-72-75 patent dates, ''45 CAL'' marked on left triggerguard bolster; full nickel-plated finish, case hardened hammer, blued trigger and screws; steel grip straps with one-piece varnished walnut grips. All visible matching serial numbers, including ''1358'' on cylinder periphery; loading gate correctly marked ''1302'', correct early-style ''donut'' ejector rod head. Mfg'd 1880. The ''D.F.C.'' mark of U.S. Inspector David F. Clark is stamped on bottom of frame above the serial number, on bottom of barrel ahead of the cylinder pin (along with a ''P'' proofmark), and on cylinder periphery near another ''P'' proofmark. A 1987-dated Colt factory letter accompanying this revolver states that it was shipped to Shoverling, Daly & Gales in New York City on Dec. 27, 1880 in a shipment of 50 guns, and confirms all the above features but for the finish, which was listed as ''blue''. This discrepancy is explained by this gun's classification as an ''Overrun'' revolver: one originally intended for the U.S. military but factory refinished in nickel plate and sold to the commercial/civilian market, and its lack of a ''U.S.'' frame stamping and military inspector's grip cartouches. Condition is excellent, retaining 92% nickel with very minor losses at right front frame cutout and rear of right frame at grip juncture; grip straps show losses at sides and wear areas but difficult to discern as color matches closely. All markings are sharp; many screw heads retain their original bright fire blue. Walnut grips retain most of their original glossy varnish with knackering at right bottom and a large ''38'' stamped into each side. Action is crisp, tight and positive; bore appears bright with sharp rifling. Est.: $8,500-$11,500. (Antique)

Left side of barrel has the ''Colt Frontier Six-Shooter'' etched panel; the corresponding ''44'' caliber designation appears in tiny numbers on bottom of barrel ahead of cylinder pin. A 2018-dated Colt factory letter accompanying this revolver states that it was shipped to E.K. Tryon, Jr. & Co., Phila., PA, on Oct. 22, 1881 in a shipment of 4 guns, and confirms all the above features but for the barrel length and grips, as 7.5'' and walnut were considered ''standard'' at the time. Condition is fine+, retaining approx. 60% darkening barrel blue, 40% cylinder blue, mostly in the flutes, and approx. 75-80% deep Colt blue to grip straps with wear mostly confined to backstrap; frame retains 50% case hardening, silvering and darkening. All markings are sharp; most screw heads retain their original bright fire blue. Walnut grips retain approx. 75% original glossy varnish with a patch of wear and loss to left side; ''Dr. S'' and ''1881'' were hand-scribed into bottom grip panels. ''Marty'' Huber. From the iconic Mel Guy Collection of Single Action Colt revolvers. Est.: $12,000-$15,000. (Antique)

Original Winchester Delivery Crate

Lot # 44 (Sale Order: 45 of 672)

Original Winchester Delivery Crate for 10 Model 94 Lever Action Sporting Carbines, marked with Winchester lightning bolt logo to both sides of box, with red/white/blue en...mored labels. Top of box pencil addressed to J.M. Stewart & Co., Indiana, PA. It is interesting to note that J.M. Stewart, Indiana, PA, is the name of actor James (Maitland) Stewart, and addressed to his paternal grandfather's hardware store (also J.M. Stewart), which is now the Jimmy Stewart Museum, but at this time was a hardware store run by his grandfather and later his father. Stewart often sent his Academy Awards to be displayed in the front window. The Stewarts could trace their Indiana, PA roots back to 1772, where his paternal great-great-grandfather was captured by Indians in July 1776 and held captive for eleven months. Crate measures 43''x16''x12-1/2''. Condition is very good with light oxidation, toning, rounding at corners, and some minor losses to pine flats. Label shows approx. 75% original paper with just some losses. Top address is clear. A great early crate dating from the post-WWI period. Est.: $800-$1,200.
