Civil War Remington New Model Army Perc. Revolver

Lot # 9 (Sale Order: 10 of 672)

Civil War Remington ''New Model'' Army Percussion Revolver, #32946 on frame under left grip, .44 cal., 8'' octagonal barrel with mortised cone front sight and long sighti...moreng groove in frame top strap, 6-shot round cylinder with safety notches at rear, brass triggerguard, two-piece oil-finished walnut grips. Barrel name, address and patent date marking is mostly obscured, perhaps by an arsenal reblue, but stamped in tiny letters low on the top flat is, in part, ''(illegible) Ilion, New York U.S.A.'' It is additionally stamped with an ''R'' on left side of loading lever, an ''M'' behind the front triggerguard screw, an ''H'' on lower left frame ahead of juncture with grip and a larger ''75'' near serial number under left grip. The only other visible marking is a small ''CS'' stamped on cylinder periphery between two locking notches. One can only speculate, but was this revolver bought (or captured) from a U.S. source during the Civil War and subsequently stripped of its original markings (including inspector's mark on grip), refinished and marked ''CS'' at a Southern arsenal to mask its Union origins? Remote, perhaps, but the possibility exists (the ''CS'' marking appears old). Condition is very good: barrel and lever retain most reblued finish and sharp edges; cylinder, frame and grip straps are a smooth brownish gunmetal gray showing traces of finish in protected areas; dark age patina to brass triggerguard (bow is somewhat misshapen); grips show slight age and wear but are sound and without cracks or significant marks. A gun worthy of further research. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)

Remington Model 1865 Martially marked Navy Rolling Block Single Shot Cartridge Pistol, NVSN, .50 RF cal., 8.5'' round barrel with ''(naval anchor)'' stamped at breech, di...morestinctive spurtrigger frame with two-line Remington address, 1864-66 patent dates on left side, and ''P/F.C.W.'' military inspector's marks on right; two-piece oil-finished walnut stocks. Mfg'd 1866-1870. Originally with blued barrel and case hardened frame, breechblock, hammer, trigger and sheath. Condition is good to very good, with a dark aged color over old pitting to barrel, breechblock, hammer, trigger sheath and front grip strap; pleasantly faded case colors to smooth frame and backstrap; unblemished screw head slots. Stocks are solid, fit well and show the expected marks of military use; forestock has a crack at right top, but sound; right side of grip has a large ''2'' stamped at bottom. Antique Colt 2nd Model 1848 Dragoon

Lot # 12 (Sale Order: 13 of 672)

Antique Colt 2nd Model 1848 Dragoon U.S. Martial Percussion Revolver, #9691 (cylinder #9763), .44 cal., 7.5'' octagon-to-round barrel marked ''-Address Saml. Colt New Yor...morek City-'' in one line, originally finished in blue and case hardening, with unfinished brass grip straps and oil-finished one-piece walnut grips. Six-shot cylinder rolled with the ''Texas Rangers and Indians Fight'' scene including ''Model U.S.M.R.'' (United States Mounted Rifles), serial number and ''Colt's Patent'' in fancy ribands; left forward frame stamped ''Colt's / Patent'' over ''U.S.''. Mfg'd 1850-51 in a total quantity of perhaps only 2,700 revolvers, and thus quite rare and desirable today. All serial numbers match including the wedge and cylinder arbor (except as noted above). Features the improved flat mainspring with hammer roller. Condition is very fine for the type, retaining a smooth bluish-brown patina and traces of original blue in protected areas, darkened/muted case hardening, and lightly age-toned brass. Grips are fine, without chips, cracks or losses, fit perfectly and show traces of military inspector's marks; a forward-facing arrow is carved into the right grip near its juncture with the frame. This Dragoon appears all original, with tightly-fitting parts, sharp edges and markings, and clean and clear cylinder engraving. Even the early high-crowned Colt screw head slots are unblemished; all six percussion nipples are intact and un-chipped. Action is strong and butter-smooth; bore is very bright and with deep rifling. An exceptional, untouched and obviously little-used U.S. military Colt revolver from the Mexican War era. Est.: $12,000-$18,000. (Antique)

Confederate Griswold & Gunnison Perc. Navy Revolver

Lot # 13 (Sale Order: 14 of 672)

Civil War Confederate Griswold and Gunnison Brass Frame Percussion Navy Revolver, #1460, .36 cal., 7.5'' round barrel with desirable rounded upper lug contour and tiny br...moreass pin front sight, barrel lug with distinctive lower curve, bore with correct 6-groove right-twist rifling. Signature G&G brass (or bronze) frame (with reddish tone in protected areas due to high iron content), brass triggerguard and backstrap, one-piece oil-finished walnut grips. Barrel is unmarked and shows a period weld repair just ahead of forcing cone (perhaps where a rear sight dovetail was filled in). The 1.75'' long, six-shot cylinder shows twist lines, correct for this model, being made from steel bar wrapped around a mandrel, and shows remains of safety pins between each nipple; no serial number is evident on cylinder, likely being obscured by age pitting. Cylinder arbor shows old repair and crude finishing where it apparently was once broken. Triggerguard bow is thick and shows squared curves, and grip butt has significant upward acclivity, both again typical for the type. The serial number ''1460'' is stamped at front frame bottom and bottom of barrel lug; a ''3'' is stamped on right barrel lug and behind front triggerguard screw; a chisel-cut Roman numeral ''XXV'' benchmark and a cryptic backward ''R'' inspector's mark appear on right side of grip strap under the wood grip; ''EE'' is stamped on right rear of frame, and two small dots are punched on either side of rear frame above the latter mark; loading lever is marked ''00'' on lug. Condition is fair for this extremely rare type, showing no original finish, and with deep (but long ago cleaned) pitting evident on barrel, lever and cylinder; scrapes and scars from severe wartime use to aged brass frame; barrel and cylinder arbor with the above mentioned weld repairs; lever fits loose but latches securely; four cylinder nipples replaced; bottom butt screw (and perhaps one or two others) an old replacement; barrel wedge is missing. Grips show an old break repair to top left side, the expected scars of hard military use, and are somewhat undersized (once again typical for this model). Action is tight and functions but cylinder does not revolve; bore is good with definite rifling. An extremely rare (in any condition) Civil War Confederate-made revolver, of which only about 3,700 were produced. Est.: $8,000-$10,000. (Antique)

Originally blued finish, with one-piece walnut grips. Condition is very good with medium toned gunmetal gray steel having hints of blue in protected areas of barrel, and age toned brass. Oil-finished walnut stocks with iron sling bar and ring affixed to left wrist; iron furniture. Dovetailed twin-blade front sight; adjustable leaf rear sight with the R.S. Lawrence markings in three lines. Carbine appears to be a Model 1859 with 1863 improvements, as the buttstock has no patchbox but the steel buttplate is cut for one. Wood-to-metal fit is excellent, and buttstock appears original. Included is documentation from Wendell Grangaard, President of The Guns of History, Inc., who attributes this rifle to Robert L. Murphy, who enlisted in the 7th Cavalry on Jan. 26, 1872 at the age of 21. Mr. Grangaard states that he has identified the marks on this rifle (''R.M.'', ''I'' and ''C.O'') as those ordered by George A. Custer. Condition is very good, with all metal surfaces having a smooth bluish-brown patina showing scattered light erosion (a bit heavier at muzzle). A rather deep scar runs across the top tang at the rear screw, continuing onto wood. Stocks show age and the scattered scars typical of military use, small losses at rear lockplate tang and rear top tang, but are smooth, solid and show nice coloration. Action is tight and crisp; bore is shiny with distinct rifling and will improve with cleaning. Est.: $2,500-$3,000. (Antique)

British Snider Conversion Cavalry Carbine

Lot # 24 (Sale Order: 25 of 672)

British Snider Conversion Single Shot Cartridge Cavalry Carbine, by Enfield, #1963 (breechblock), .577 Boxer CF cal., 19-1/8'' round barrel marked with ''Steel'' and nume...morerous view and proofmarks at left breech, as is receiver; flush steel lockplate marked ''(crown)/V.R'' behind hammer and ''(crown/broad arrow)/1870/Enfield'' ahead, single steel barrel band, trigger, and sling ring behind brass triggerguard; brass buttplate and lock screw escutcheons. Integral block-blade front and adjustable sliding-leaf rear sights. One-piecr European walnut halfstock. Condition is very good showing a smooth bluish patina to barrel, subdued case hardening to lockplate and receiver, and age patina to brass. Stock is sound with ''R./(crown)/M.'' (undecipherable) in a circular cartouche below a large arrow and above a large ''1''; it bears the typical wear and scars of military use, and it appears that someone tapped a light pattern of dotted lines into the buttstock with a nail; holes were drilled into both sides of the stock ahead of the lock for an unknown reason. Action is tight and crisp; bore has distinct rifling and will benefit from a good cleaning. As did most militaries in the late 1860s and early 1870s, Britain chose to adapt many of their obsolete percussion arms to the new metallic cartridge system; the highly successful Snider conversion (invented by American Jacob Snider) utilizes a new and simple side-hinged breechblock with a floating firing pin. Est.: $950-$1,250. (Antique)
