Item Details
This Remington Model 31-TC (Trap C-Grade) was made in June, 1947 (PSS date code). Features include an etch-engraved receiver with setter dog hunting scene on the left & ducks-in-flight scene on the right, glossed dark walnut stock with fluted comb/ double outlined checkering & contoured forearm, White Line brown rubber buttpad with black/ white spacers, black metal grip cap with fleur-de-lis design, 30" FULL barrel, serrated vent rib with dual bead sights, 14.25" LOP and 2 3/4" chamber. This gun is in nice condition with some various light wear and appears to be in good working order. The Remington Model 31 pump-action shotgun was produced from 1931 to 1949. The design was based on the best attributes of the Remington Model 17 but with side ejection and a simpler design than the previous models. It was initially offered in 12-gauge with 16- and 20-gauge added in 1933. Like the Model 17, the barrel was easily removed by way of a knurled nut at the end of the magazine tube. It competed well with Winchester’s iconic Model 12. However, its 1931 introduction coincided with the lowest point of the Depression which was a very tough time to start production of a high quality, relatively high-cost shotgun. Remington’s retail price for the Model 31 was $48.95, while Winchester had just dropped the price of the Model 12 to $39.50. The Model 31 was made in 35 variations and grades from the Standard Grade to the TF Premier Grade. Higher grades were offered with factory engraving and a ventilated rib which sold for $302 in 1931. Most grades could be ordered with a number of special options. The Model 31 was discontinued in 1948 for the same reason the Winchester Model 12 was dropped 14 years later — production cost was too high and profit margins too low. The two guns, which represented the pump-action’s pinnacle of design, craftsmanship, function and beauty, were dropped in favor of more easily manufactured and more profitable designs.
