Item Details

With the introduction of the Model 1885, the world of single shots was given a welcomed addition. In 1885 competitive target shooting in America had the stature of professional golf, or even major league football has today. Huge matches were held at places like Creedmoor, New York. Spectators would number in the thousands. The 1885 was uniquely suited to the long-range accuracy shooting of the day. The Model 1885 was the first and perhaps one of the greatest of all the John Moses Browning designs. It was conceived of and created by Browning in the frontier pioneer town of Ogden, Utah, in 1878. Not only was it the first he produced, but it was the gun that started his relationship with the Winchester Repeating Arms company. The partnership began in 1885 and the Single Shot became the Model 1885 Winchester. The Model 1885 was made in two models: Low Wall which showed an exposed hammer firing less powerful cartridges & High Wall for stronger cartridges whose steel frame covered most of the firing hammer when viewed from the side. This Winchester Model 1885 High Wall was made in 1916 and is chambered for 50-110 Winchester (also known as the 50 Express). This cartridge was first introduced in 1887, and used the same nomenclature as similar cartridges of the day and fired a 300gr, .50 caliber bullet on top of 110 grains of black powder. The original black powder load propelled the cast lead bullet at about 1,600fps (1,720 foot pounds of energy), which was one of the most powerful loads available at the time. Winchester later released a high velocity 300gr load using smokeless powder (2,245fps and 3,300 foot pounds of energy). Features of this rifle include a smooth walnut stock with high comb, case hardened receiver, metal crescent buttplate, 30" heavy octagon barrel, adjustable flip-up rear tang peep sight, dovetailed v-notch rear sight and adjustable dovetailed front globe sight. This gun has been very nicely refurbished with bright bluing & protective finish, has a nice sharp bore and appears to be in good working order. Duane “Jim” Smith Estate

Please Note - Illinois Gun Laws require a transfer on all firearms, regardless of age or caliber. (This is not an ATF Law.)..... 6- It is the buyers responsibility to email us, or have their dealer email us, a FFL copy for shipping (sporting goods store/ pawn shop/ individual dealer). FFL's can be emailed to auction@willsullivanauction.com. The buyers name must be somewhere on the email (Please do not simply include lot numbers or invoice number)..... 7- Shipping Costs are based on a simple flat rate - $60 for the first gun and $10 for each additional gun, regardless if it is a long gun or handgun. Items other than firearms or "special shipping" will be listed at the end of the items description. 8- There is a $15 Paperwork Fee for each gun purchased. This includes guns being shipped and also includes Dealer-To-Dealer Transfers..... 9- Each successful buyer will receive a invoice, from ProxiBid, within 24 hours after the conclusion of the auction.
