Documented Factory Game Panel Scene Westley Richards Presentation Grade Deeley & Edge Patent Sidelever Falling Block Single Shot Dangerous Game Rifle

Built with a blued steel barrel featuring a beaded blade front sight, a two leaf (one standing, one folding) rear sight, as well as a folding ladder rear sight on the matted sighting flat which is marked "WESTLEY RICHARDS. & Co.170 NEW BOND. STREET. LONDON." in gold lettering and "METFORD'S PATENT RIFLING/FOR .500 BORE TAPER EXPRESS CARTRIDGE". The barrel is also marked with Birmingham proofs and the serial number along with having the under rib mounted ram rod ferrules and front sling eye. The barrel is fitted to the Deeley & Edge 1881 patent sidelever falling block action which displays near full coverage scroll engraving surrounding "SOLE MANUFACTURERS/WESTLEY RICHARDS/170 NEW BOND St. LONDON" marked on the left along with a vignette of a lion laying in repose, "DEELEY-EDGE/PATENT EXPRESS RIFLE" marked on the right, and a triangle around "1885" inlaid in gold on the top. The forward area of the triggerguard shows a bust of a lion, the guard itself has a tiger, and the upper tang shows a wolf, all surrounded by more tight scrollwork. The replacement wood consists of a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered forend with horn tip, engraved wedge escutcheon, and housing the black ram rod with brass tips as well as a round knob pistol grip stock with a tiger and scroll engraved patchbox, rear sling eye, and a red rubber recoil pad. This rifle is pictured on pages 135 and 136 of Wil Winfer's "British Single Shot Rifles; Volume IV", though in the caption the serial number is recorded incorrectly and the photos taken prior to the wood being replaced. Length of pull 14 3/16 inches. Weight 8 lbs. 6 oz.

Class: Antique

Very good, retaining 70% period refurbished blue finish with some light scattered pitting, silver patina on the action, clear markings, and overall mild handling evidence. The wood is very fine with a few minor marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A great chance to get your hands on a scarce Deeley & Edge action rifle!
