Item Details
SERIAL #: 161108
DESIGN: Single action with 6-shot removable cylinder. 5-1/2” round barrel. .45 Long Colt caliber.
MATERIAL/FINISH COMPOSITION: Blued steel. Checkered hard rubber grip panels with the rampant colt at the top.
FEATURES: Blade front sight. Groove rear sight. Loading gate with ejector. Top of barrel stamped "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFC. CO HARTFORD CT.U.S.A.". Back strap is marked "J.H. DILLINGHAM". John H. Dillingham was born on September 29, 1853 in Richmond, Kentucky and moved to Missouri as a baby. He went west as a young man and was appointed an officer for several months assisting in keeping law and order while at Butte, Montana. He returned to Missouri to marry and take up farming, but eventually was appointed city marshal of Platte City and held the post until April, 1896. He then became sheriff January 1, 1897. He was shot and killed while making an arrest on August 20, 1900. His death was quickly avenged by his son Henry who killed his father's slayer. No death was more widely and sincerely mourned in Platte county. ALSO INCLUDED WITH THE REVOLVER are: 1) Colt letter of authenticity for the single action army revolver (dated March 28, 2013); 2) Leather holster and belt ("98" is stamped in the leather belt at the holes for the buckle); 3) Set of handcuffs with a patent date of May 2, 1899; 4) Gold chain and gold plated pocket watch engraved with the initials "JHD".
CONDITION: Very good. Less than 30% of the finish remains on metal components. Signs of old light pitting on metal surfaces. Modest muzzle wear. Serial number matches on frame, trigger guard and bottom of grip. Grip panels show moderate wear with significant fading to the checkering. The inscription is clear with some fading to the letters in the name as well as the periods between the "J" & the "H". 1) The factory letter is excellent. 2) The leather of the holster and belt is still very supple with modest wear and cracking at the edges. 3) The handcuffs are very good with approximately 80% of the plating remaining. 4) Pocket watch shows wear to the glass cover and some loss of the plating on the rear.
