AN UNUSUALLY GOOD QUALITY IVORY MOUNTED TANTO.

Lot # 3428 (Sale Order: 427 of 457)

Relief carved throughout with village scenes, with children fishing and flying kites, playing (one appears to be a young samurai with his own sword thrust through his bel...moret), merchants, geisha, and florals. Many mounts are pieced together ivory, but this appears to be made of two pieces, one for the handle and one for the saya; signed near geisha at bottom. MANTETSU RAILWAY KATANA.

Lot # 3436 (Sale Order: 435 of 457)

The Mantetsu blades were the result of Kusaka Kazuharu successfully developing steel using Manchurian iron at the Mantetsu Experimental Center, which was turned over to D...moreairen Railway Factory to experiment with making a sword. The steel was used to forge a sword, and the initial sword was mistakenly appraised as a Hizen Tadayoshi, encouraging the factory to begin producing steel blades in September 1937. This sword is signed katana mei "Mantetsu Kitau Tsukuru Kore", while the reverse is dated Spring 1943, using the zodiacal method. Typical Mantetsu construction with a suguha hamon with a gunome bump.
