(C) A VERY SCARCE NORTH AMERICAN ARMS 1911 .45 ACP SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL.

Lot # 1192 (Sale Order: 51 of 324)

This is one of just over 100 original prototype, or tool room sample pistols, manufactured by North American Arms Co. Ltd. of Quebec City, Canada. North American was awarded a US Ordnance Department contract (#WAR ORD P-11092-1953SA) on July 1, 1918, to produce 500,000 pistols at the rate of 2,000 pistols per day, at a cost of $15.50 each. North American’s production facilities were housed in the Ross Rifle factory, but the armistice that November caused the contract to be cancelled on December 4, 1918. As a result, North American Arms never delivered any pistols or spare parts to the US Government under the contract. In addition to the maker’s marking on the left side of the slide, North American Arms pistols differ from other contract-made Model 1911s by having an uncheckered hammer, no lanyard loop on the mainspring housing, serial number on the left rear of the slide, and no US acceptance or inspection stamps. Information gleaned from an ex-North American Arms employee indicates that a few of the late guns in the series were left in-the-white and were subsequently given a blued finish by one of the gunshops operating in Quebec City at the time. This example is also accompanied by a 1914 dated and Canadian property marked brass reinforced woven Mills 305 holster. CONDITION: Overall very good. The metal retains 95-97% of the commercial quality blue finish with some fading along the high edges and projections. Some subtle mottling is present along the sides of the slide, but the markings remain clear and the edges are still sharp and crisp. The checkered, double diamond grips are likewise in very good shape, with some minor wear and flattening of the points on either panel. The magazine is in good condition, but has two areas of cleaned pitting that have gray metal surrounding them. The pistol is mechanically excellent, with a fine, bright bore. Accessories: Holster Barrel Length: 5" Caliber/Bore: .45 ACP FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: North American Arms Model: 1911 Serial Number: 97

(C) TOKYO ARSENAL BABY NAMBU SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH 2 MATCHING MAGAZINES.

Lot # 1193 (Sale Order: 52 of 324)

The Baby Nambu was so named as it looked like a scaled down version of the previous "Grandpa" and "Papa" Nambus. While it was never officially adopted, it was approved for private purchase, but the cost and the preference for the sword as the sidearm of choice made it so that the Baby struggled to gain traction. Typical configuration in 7mm Nambu with barleycorn front sight, V-ntoch rear sight, right side of slide with kanji for "Nambu Shiki" (lit. Nambu Type), Tokyo Arsenal "stacked cannonballs" on top of slide ahead of ejection port. Matching full or partial serial numbers observed on slide, bolt lock, bolt, locking block, barrel (internally, on lug), recoil spring guide, cocking knob, and magazine; due to the condition of the pistol, the trigger assembly was not disassembled. Two piece checkered walnut groups. With a spare magazine, which is also numbered to the gun. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining virtually all of the factory bluing throughout, with some silvering to sharpest edges, such as the recoil spring housing, lanyard loop, and some reciprocating areas. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent, with strong rifling and some minor frosting. Grips are excellent. Finding a Baby Nambu in this kind of condition is very rare, and even rarer when they have two matching magazines. Accessories: 2 Magazines Total Barrel Length: 3 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: 7mm Nambu FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Tokyo Arsenal Model: Baby Nambu Serial Number: 2364

(A) HISTORIC BRACE OF COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY PERCUSSION REVOLVERS INSCRIBED TO MEDAL OF HONOR RECIEPIE

Lot # 1201 (Sale Order: 60 of 324)

Manufactured in 1863 at the height of the Civil War, numbered rather close together, 136314 and 136096. Revolvers feature standard octagonal barrel with pin front sights, New York addresses, naval scene rolled percussion cylinders, silver plated brass grip straps, and varnished walnut 1-piece grips. Both back straps are period engraved "To J.C. Hunterson Co. B. 3rd Penn. Cav / From his comrads". Born in 1841 in Philadelphia, John C. Hunterson mustered into Company B of the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry July 23, 1861. He was awarded the Medal of Honor on August 2, 1897, for his actions on June 5, 1862, at Fair Oaks, Virginia, as his citation reads “While under fire, between the lines of the two armies, voluntarily gave up his own horse to an engineer officer whom he was accompanying on a reconnaissance and whose horse had been killed, thus enabling the officer to escape with valuable papers in his possession.”. Serving as an orderly for an engineering officer carrying important, detailed maps of the Army of the Potomac’s III Corps from an earlier meeting with Brigadier Generals Hooker, Sickles, and Grover, Hunterson risked his own life and actually fell under Confederate capture (before escaping), allowing the officer to escape on his own horse. Hunterson's actions kept the valuable information out of Confederate hands, which could have led to a disastrous outcome. After continued service, Hunterson mustered out August 24, 1864, likely when he was presented this pair of revolvers. CONDITION: Good, as heavily used. Revolvers display a rich, even gray patina with legible markings. Cylinder scenes are worn but partially visible. Grip straps retain traces of silver and display an overall mottled mellow golden mustard patina. Gun (A) has some harsher hammer marks on the butt with some additional period engraving illegible underneath. Grips show heavy use with wear, nicks, and finish loss. Gun (A) also has losses on each side of the grip at the toe. Matching numbers observed throughout both guns, Gun (B) has a replaced wedge. A few screws also appear to be replacements. A truly historic pair of Civil War inscribed Colts. They would make a prime addition to any collection of Civil War arms. (A) OUTSTANDING PAIR OF FACTORY ENGRAVED COLT 1851 NAVY REVOLVERS COMMISSIONED AND PURCHASED BY VICT

Lot # 1204 (Sale Order: 63 of 324)

Gifts given to royal personages are not uncommon, as they were used to curry favor by means of lavish gifts; neither are guns owned by royalty, who had the means to purchase ornate weaponry. What is rarer is gifts given by royalty to specific members of their retinue. This pair of pistols is one of the latter, inscribed on the lid escutcheon with the crown of Savoy used by Victor Emmanuel II, with the hinge engraved "Dono di S.M. il Re V.E. Al Generale Di Sanfront", which translates to "Given by His Majesty the King Victor Emmanuel to General Di Sanfront". Victor Emmanuel II was a massively important figure for Italy, as the first king of unified Italy, while Alessandro Negri di Sanfront was an important general during the Unification of Italy. The oldest son of Charles Albert and Maria Theresa, Victor had an early predilection for politics and the military, and fought in the First Italian War of Independence with his father; importantly, he fought at Pastrengo, where Alessandro Negri de Sanfront led his legendary charge of the Royal Carabinieri, a regiment designed to safeguard the king on the battlefield, and a position he was hand selected for. During Pastrengo, King Charles Albert came under rifle fire, which scattered his horses and left the king exposed and vulnerable. Sanfront immediately led a charge of the Carabinieri against the Austrians to cover the king and was quickly followed by the full three squadrons of the Carabinieri, securing the exposed king. This event is still remembered today and referred to as “The Charge of the Carabinieri”. Sebastiano De Albertis painted the legendary scene, the 4th Carabinieri have a horse carousel that reenacts the charge, and there is even a barracks named after di Sanfront. After his legendary exploit, di Sanfront continued to fight in the Italian Wars of Independence, serving as an aide-de-camp to King Albert in 1853, major general in 1859, and lieutenant general in 1862, a position he held until he retired in 1865. He was decorated as a Knight Grand Officer of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus "for the commendable service provided as commander of the three Carabinieri squadrons" (no doubt influenced by his rescue of the king), amongst a myriad of other awards. While di Sanfront was campaigning, Victor Emmanuel was engaged in the politics of reuniting Italy and further campaigning. When Charles Albert abdicated in 1849, Victor Emmanuel became king and signed an armistice with the Austrian commander, Radetzky. He quickly became the symbol of Risorgimento (lit. Resurgence), the Italian unification movement. After the fallout from the end of the Crimean War and the events associated with Giuseppe Garibaldi, Victor Emmanuel met with Garibaldi at Teano and gained control of south Italy. On March 17th, 1861, the Parliament of Unified Italy proclaimed Victor Emmanuel king, and in 1870, he captured Rome, and set up Italy’s capital in the city in 1871. The balance of his reign was much calmer, and he died in 1878 after a brief illness. In his post-war life, di Sanfront continued to serve in a political capacity with multiple mayorships, councillorships, and, on November 16th, 1876, was appointed a Senator of the Kingdom of Italy in the 13th legislature, before passing February 25th, 1884. These guns, recently rediscovered, highlight the respect the King of Italy had for one of his foremost military and political cohorts. Beyond their inscription, the pistols are in absolutely outstanding condition. They are both London Colts with the London address, and are covered with fine deluxe scrollwork that compares very favorably to the pair of Navies believed presented to Napoleon III of France, 21900 and 21904; see Colt Engraving by Wilson, pg. 131, except that di Sanfront’s casing is somewhat nicer and contains more accessories, including some with unusual features. Per the serial numbers of the revolvers, they are made circa 1853, at the beginning of the Colt London era, and represent the most cutting edge for di Sanfront; while no presentation is inscribed, the most likely reason is his promotion to Lieutenant General, given the notation of Victor Emmanuel as King and di Sanfront as General. Classic configuration of Third Model navies with pin front sights and V notch rear sights on hammer. Deluxe, approximately 75% coverage, of finely cut English acanthus scroll on a finely shaded background, with “Colt’s Patent” hand engraved in an open ribbon in gothic font. Fine English blued barrel assemblies and cylinders, with case colored rammer assemblies, frames, hammers, and with gilded backstraps and silvered trigger guards. Deluxe piano finished walnut grips. Matching full or partial serial numbers observed throughout, including barrel assemblies, frame, trigger guard, butt, and cylinders; due to the condition, we have elected not to disassemble these revolvers. Housed in a deluxe London case with lid engraved as aforementioned

(A) ENGRAVED GOLD WASHED CASED COLT MODEL 1862 THUER CONVERSION POCKET POLICE WITH BOTH CONVERSION A

Lot # 1207 (Sale Order: 66 of 324)

This exceptionally rare revolver is one of the series of Colt percussion revolvers converted to a central fire system designed by F. Alexander Thuer, which was used on six different models of Colt revolvers, totaling only about 5,000 revolvers, between 1869 and 1872. Although the Thuer cartridge was not the first centerfire cartridge produced it represents Colt’s first production center fire revolver. The cartridge has an unusual tapered brass casing with small copper primer and lead bullet that loads into the cylinder from the front. Percussion cylinders were altered by machining away a portion of the rear section and fitting a conversion ring over that extension. The conversion ring has a rebounding firing pin, and a safe mode. Most revolvers converted under the Thuer system had the right edge of their lugs altered to allow loading of the tapered cartridge and are usually accompanied by their interchangeable percussion cylinder, which was one of Colt’s selling points for the conversion. Barrel lug on this revolver was not altered. Gold and silver finished throughout, with 5 - 1/2" round barrel, pin front sight with 1-line barrel address, “COLTS PATENT” on left front side of the frame, and caliber marking on the left rear shoulder of the trigger guard. The serial number is on the four positions: bottom of the frame, barrel lug, trigger guard, and butt strap. All are accompanied by the initials "IP" which indicates that this revolver was factory fitted with ivory grip and factory plated. The Thuer conversion utilizes a Pocket Navy 6-shot cylinder and is numbered to the revolver. The percussion cylinder, also numbered to this revolver, is a fluted 5-shot Model 1862 Police cylinder. Revolver is engraved by L.D. Nimschke with very high quality, arabesque scroll patterns with punch dot background on the frame and up over the recoil shields. The barrel has nearly full coverage matching patterns with Mr. Nimschke’s typical fan pattern at the top of the back strap. Heel of the back strap, butt strap & trigger guard are engraved to match the frame. Thuer cylinder has the stagecoach holdup scene. Percussion cylinder is engraved to match the revolver on the lands between the flutes. Revolver has silver plated brass trigger guard & back strap containing a wonderful one piece ivory grip. Thuer cylinder and conversion ring, hammer, and rammer are gold washed while the remainder of the revolver is silver plated, as is the percussion cylinder. Accompanied by a spectacular rosewood casing with hinged lid and silver mounts that include corner reinforcements, swinging latches, and a mortised lock in the front with 2 functioning keys. Interior is burgundy velvet lined, American style, compartmented in the bottom for the revolver, an original full metal box of 36 caliber Thuer cartridges that has Kraft paper wrapping with orange & black label and appears to be all original, a silver plated 2-cavity bullet mold without sprue cutter that is unmarked, a silver-plated Dixon bag flask, an L-shaped nipple wrench, two sets of Thuer cartridge loading tools, a small Hawksley pewter oiler, an early lacquered tin of Eley Bros. caps with orange label, an ebony bits box containing five spare screws, a packet of Colt’s combustible cartridges, four loose original Thuer cartridges and several lead balls. Bottom of the case is covered with leather. This revolver is pictured in full color with most of the accessories on p. 116 of Fine Colts The Dr. Joseph A. Murphy Collection by Wilson. On pages 42 and 46 of the March 2000 edition of American Rifleman, R.L. Wilson fully illustrates this revolver and set of accessories as found, except for the reloading tools. He states that this revolver was shipped factory plated with ivory grip and engraved by Nimschke for Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. PROVENANCE: Dr. Joseph A. Murphy Collection. CONDITION: Revolver is very fine plus. Overall retains most of its original silver finish to barrel, frame, and grips; back strap thinning at high traffic areas, with as much as 30% remaining at the top of the strap. Thuer conversion cylinder, conversion ring, hammer & loading lever retain strong original gold wash. Percussion cylinder appears to be a cleaned bright metal color with some fine pitting and traces of what appears to be gilding in the recesses. Bullet mold and flask retain most of their fine silver plate. Loading tools retain strong blue finish. Cartridge box is sealed in plastic and shows light edge wear with some minor soil on label but appears to be completely intact. Cap tin is very fine. Case is extremely fine with a couple of minor grain checks in lid, otherwise sound and retains virtually all of its brilliant original finish. Interior is equally bright and as new. This is certainly one of the finest Thuer conversion revolvers to be found today. Accessories: Case Barrel Length: 5 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .38 Rifled FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1862 Pol

(A) HISTORIC DOCUMENTED FACTORY ENGRAVED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER FROM THE 1876 CENTENNIAL E

Lot # 1208 (Sale Order: 67 of 324)

Newly discovered and highly desirable. Manufactured in 1874 and displayed on the wheel of Colts display at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This was one of Colt's finest show displays, with over 300 fine and highly engraved guns. This is one of the 18 centerpiece Colt Single Action Armies that are in the center wheel of this display. There are photos of the wheel display in several books, here are just a few: "Colt An American Legend" by R.L. Wilson, pg. 172; "The Colt Heritage" by R.L. Wilson pg. 172; "The Colt Engraving Book: Volume One" by R.L. Wilson on pg. 388. Exquisitely factory engraved with ivory grip and nickel and gold finish. It is listed by serial number, 13439, at the top of the Henry Folsom list. The Folsom list is a document dated October 15th, 1877, and is a detailed list of some of the firearms used in the 1876 Centennial Exposition wheel display. All were returned to Colt Fire Arms Company by H.D. Folsom after the 1876 Exposition and are listed by description and serial number. Line 1 serial #11086, 1 gun "Colt Army 45 Cal Ivory Nickel Eng. Gold" Line #2 denotes 6 additional guns, same configuration by serial number. This gun's serial number is fourth in line and center. According to the Colt Factory letter, this gun is a .45 Long Colt with a 5 - 1/2" barrel, nickel finish, ivory stocks, factory engraved, and was shipped to E. C. Meacham Arms Company, St. Louis, Missouri, on November 7th, 1887, in a shipment of 1 gun. The remarks section of the Colt latter states "The records contain a previous listing for this serial number. The gun was originally a .45/C with a 7 - 1/2" barrel, nickel & gold finish, ivory stocks, and factory engraved. It was included in a shipment of 6 guns to Simmons Hardware Company in St. Louis Missouri on August 28, 1884. It was returned to the factory on November 1, 1884, where subsequent changes to the configuration of the revolver were made.". This confirms that the barrel was shortened at the Colt factory. CONDITION: At some point in the life of this revolver, it was poorly stored and had been wet. But, all of the factory original engraving is visible and clear to the eye. There is no finish left on this gun and it has scattered pitting across the entire outside of the gun. The front sight shows has been taken down a little bit. 1-piece ivory grip shows lots of grain and has a nice mellowed patina. The gun locks up tight and indexes fine. All factory markings are original and clearly readable, barrel and cylinder are factory numbered and ejector housing is the original period correct "first type" housing with the stud. Bore is dark with some pitting and frosting in the lands and grooves. A very rare gun that is 1 of 18 single actions used on the Colt Display. A number of known Colt Model 1860 Armies were presented to various high ranking Union Army officers and officials with similar inscriptions "With COMPLIMENTS OF COL.COLT" during mid-late June 1861. According to the book "The Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver" by Charles W. Pate, book one of the Colt shipping ledgers from that time, listed on page 146 a box containing 35 Model 1860 Army revolvers and six of those guns are known presentations from Col. Colt, including serial numbers 1856 & 4257 to Col. James Cameron, serial numbers 1929 & 2119 to Major General N.P. Banks, serial number 4782 to Honorable F.P. Stanton, and serial number 4740 to Honorable E. Perrin. Photographed on page 368 of Pate's book is the backstrap showing the inscription to F.P. Stanton's gun serial number 4782, the inscription is nearly identical to the inscription on Perrin's gun serial number 4740. Edwin Oscar (E.O.) Perrin was born Dec. 3, 1822 in Springfield, Ohio and educated at Springfield Academy. He later studied law and was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1842. He moved from Ohio to Memphis, TN practicing law there and was the Navy agent under Pres. Taylor. In 1857 he traveled to Kansas and took an active part in the canvas against the Lecompton Constitution. He was an assistant to Presidential Candidate Stephen A. Douglass from the State of Maine and apparently very active in the Democratic Party. In 1861, at the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Perrin was dispatched by Secretary of War Cameron to New Mexico where he served under the command of Colonel Kit Carson, arranging supplies for the Union Army that was resisting the incursion of the Confederacy led by General Henry Sibley. Colonel Carson wrote favorably of Mr. Perrin’s brave & honorable service. He was subsequently nominated by President Johnson to become the Chief Justice of the Utah Territory Supreme Court but the Senate rejected his nomination, apparently on political grounds, not for lack of qualifications. He was also rejected by the Senate when he was nominated to be the Internal Revenue Assessor of the First District of New York. Mr. Perrin was the Secretary of five Democratic National Conventions and in 1868 was elected Clerk of the Court of Appeals in New York and was reappointed to the same position by the court in 1870. At this time there is little known of Mr. Perrin’s activities after 1870 until his death in Dec. 1888. Accompanying revolver and case is a binder of much documentation supporting authenticity and information regarding E.O. Perrin. CONDITION: The revolver is excellent retaining approximately 75% original blue mixing with blue/brown patina. Frame shows 30-40% original bright case colors blending with patina. Loading lever shows strong original case colors mainly in protected areas turning to patina. Hammer has 40%+ bright case color with light pitting on the face. Cylinder is mostly brown patina with traces of original blue, showing a strong roll die cylinder scene and patent markings. All original unmolested screws. Most of the original silver on the brass trigger guard. Backstrap mostly bare metal with some original silver on top, beginning to flake. Grips are fine overall with most of the original varnish showing moderate wear. Case is very good with typical mars and dents with one sizable crack along the back of the lid. Hinges are tight.
