(7)Original Wright Bros 8X10 Glass Plate Negatives

Lot # 2177 (Sale Order: 235 of 535)

This lot contains seven 8 X 10 glass negatives from the first flights of the Wright Flyer training Army Air Corps officers to fly at the newly developed airdrome at Colle...morege Park Maryland. The photographer is believed to be G.B Luckey. Most of these photographs are either unpublished or have not been found as being published. In 1908 the Wright brothers secured a contract with the U.S. Army Signal Corps to supply flying machines and train pilots. The Wrights would prove their machine’s qualifications at Fort Myer, a military base in Arlington County, VA. They met or exceeded all of the Army’s specifications, including flying at 40 miles per hour, carrying a combined passenger weight of 350 pounds, maneuvering in any direction in the air, landing without damage, and flying for at least an hour non-stop, which was a world record at the time. Ft. Myer proved to be unsatisfactory for the contract. The field was much too small to make any kind of significant maneuvers, and the crowds flocked to Ft. Myer in the thousands. The Army selected a 160-acre field in College Park, close to the Maryland Agricultural College, as the site for further testing, leasing it from a farmer on August 25, 1909. College Park was chosen for its proximity to the railroad tracks, making it easy to transport necessary material and personnel to the site. The final part of the Wrights’ contract specified that they had to train two Army men to fly their machine. Lieutenants Lahm and Benjamin D. Foulois were chosen to be the first officers to be trained by Wright, but due to Foulois’ selection for the International Congress of Aeronautics in France, he was replaced by Lt. Frederic E. Humphreys of the Corps of Engineers. Wilbur Wright was to train the pilots as Orville was in Berlin at the time, demonstrating their Flyer to the German government. Wilbur first took to the air with his students on October 8, 1909, and over the course of four weeks, taught them to maneuver and land the plane, as well as how to coast to the ground with a dead engine. On October 26, Humphreys and Lahm flew solo for the first time. Once Wilbur had finished training Lahm and Humphreys, he gave the returning Foulois a total of 54 minutes of flight time, before Lahm and Humphreys crashed the plane on November 5, ending military flights for several months. Please note that these are the original *X10 glass plate negatives. For this listing the images of the glass plates have been reversed in Photoshop for easier viewing. You are not bidding on positive images. Plate 1 - Shows hangar at College Park with the Wright 1909 military Flyer, Signal Corps #1. Wilbur Wright is behind the airplane to the right. Picture taken early October 1909 as the wing warp modifications made by Wilbur have not yet been installed. The engine is off the plane at this time most likely for transport from Fort Myer. Plate 2 - The Wright military Flyer in the hangar at College Park. Identified in the photo are Wilbur Wright and Lt. Frank Lahm This image was published in the October 10, 1909 Baltimore Sun and the October 1909 Book of Royal Blue by B&O Railroad with photo credit to G.B. Luckey who worked for Leslie's Weekly. Plate 3 - The 1908 Wright Flyer in flight with a passenger at Fort Myer. The American flag was not on the airplane during the flight with Lt. Selfridge who was killed on the Sept. 17th flight, so this is either the flight with Lt. Lahm on September 9 or Major squire on Sept 12. Plate 4 - College Park field 1909. Wright flyer is in the hangar. Plate 5 - Hangars at College Park Field circa 1910. Note railroad tracks to the right. Plate 6 - Same as Plate 5 but with automobiles Plate 7 - This photo is most likely a composite photo that was re photographed. It is shot from the interior of a train car supposedly on the tracks next to the buildings in Plates 5& 6. The symmetry is not equal to the actual landscape and the exposures seem to be different from the inside of the train car to the outside, coupled with the fact that the negative image is printed on a piece of plate glass and not the thinner photographic glass plate,

1911 Bleriot Training Model Airplane

Lot # 2177a (Sale Order: 236 of 535)

Background: Shakir Saliba Jerwan (1881-1942), was born in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1904, Jerwan & his brother, Fuad (Fred), sons of the 1st ordained Protestant minister in Leb...moreanon emigrated to the United States and became citizens in 1910. Jerwan was trained to fly on a Bleriot monoplane at the Moisant School of Aviation, Mineola, NY in the Summer of 1911. This was the 1st Class at the Moisant School of Aviation. Among his classmates was Harriet Quimby, the 1st licensed woman pilot in the USA. Unfortunately she was the 1st woman to die in an airplane when her Bleriot two seat tandem pitched forward and she and her passenger, father of the meet promoter, fell to their deaths at the 3rd Harvard Boston Aero Meet, July 1,1912. Shakir Jerkin earned his pilot’s license, (#54) in August 1911. His brother Fuad, who was deaf, was working as a mechanic at the Moisant school. Fuad built this model of a Bleriot XI with a 6 ft wingspan, an electric motor to spin the propeller, and movable control surfaces. In late fall 1911, Shakir started lecturing on the “Art of Flying” using this lifelike model and stereopticon slides to illustrate his lecture. Their instructor, Frenchman Andre Houpert, left aviation after having taught the 1911 class at Moisant. Moisant hired Shakir Jerwan as Chief Pilot and Instructor at the Moisant School of Aviation, Garden City, New York, and he served there through the seasons 1912-14. He was also appointed technical officer on the staff of the First Aero Squadron of Volunteers of the United States. Shakir Jerwan continued as Chief Pilot/Instructor until around 1915 when he left for the warmer climes of Guatemala & helped organize their Air Force. Upon returning to the United States he left aviation and became a hotelier running the Inn at Cornwall on the Hudson. Shakir's brother Fuad (Fred) had graduated from the Clarke Institute for the Deaf in Northampton, MA. He had apparently retained the model when Shakir moved to Guatemala and when the Clark Institute was celebrating it’s 50th anniversary in 1919 he brought it there for a display featuring the accomplishments of their graduates. It remained there in storage until the Clark send material to auction when re-purposing some buildings. The model is in overall remarkable condition with most of the wing, tail, and rudder fabric intact. The wood propeller and electric motor are in place but untested. It measures 5 ft long with a wingspan of 6 ft. This is probably one of the first models used as a training aid and may be the earliest surviving aeronautical training model in existence! WWII US Navy Elgin Model 600 Ships Chronometer

Lot # 2178 (Sale Order: 237 of 535)

WWII Elgin Watch Company Made Model 600 Ships Chronometer. Chronometer is in excellent condition with original wooden carrying case as well as original wooden daily use b...moreox. Very intricate gimbaled ships clock was used to keep time about naval ships. Still used by mariners to this day. This rare piece has its late owners name on a brass plaque on the inside of the daily use box. His Name was William E. Redecker and it must have been a gift to him. He was the President of the First National Bank of Elgin, Illinois and this may have been his 1987 retirement gift. The clock appears to have been reconditioned for the presentation to Redecker. We can not get the back off the clock works to do full timing test but we may assume it was serviced before given as gift. This is a supremely rare and highly prized Navy chronometer. NOTE: We did not want to damage the clock works back and damage it in any way. It is being told "as is" but we know it was very well taken care of in any event.
