Has officer overseas cap with pin holes for an officer rank bar.

WWII USAAF P-47 Pilot Grouping-512th Fighter Sq.

Lot # 2050a (Sale Order: 55 of 535)      

This group is from USAAF First Lt. Robert R. Kranz from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He flew P-47 Thunderbolts with 512th Fighter Squadron of the 9th Air Force. He had one Disti...morenguished Flying Cross, Air medal with 11 oak leaf clusters and unit citation. This grouping includes 1) his four pocket uniform made for him by Chicago uniform company. The interior pocket tag is named and dated Dec. 28th 1943. The wings are unmarked clutchbacks with smooth clutches and appear to be sterling. The 9th AF patch is felt British made. His trousers and khaki belt are EM style but have been custom upgraded for comfort. 2) His visor cap is missing eagle and is Knox company maker marked and has partial serial number and size 6 7/8 under headband. 3) Officer's overseas cap, 4) three patches with 9th AF, AF patch and extra wing shaped blue felt patch. 5) VFW Overseas cap. 6) 1945 New Civil Air regulations soft cover, 7) Air Cadet school book from November 1943 with his picture in book and separate photo of him. 8) Pilot's Information File 9) Unit History from end of war "Over seas with the 512th Fighter Squadron" soft cover. 10) 1981 published Unit History, hard bound with Lt. Kranz mentioned throughout. 11) WWII Air Medal in Case, 12) Post WWII Distinguished Flying Cross in case 13) Kranz's original USAAF "Crusher" visor hat, 14) Framed picture with his future wife and 15) black drawstring back with the rifle shells from his funeral salute and 16.) 6 postcards and photos of him in his A-2 jacket and 4 pages of Discharge, Service Record and more. This is a fine WWII pilot grouping from the greater Midwest.

WWII USAAF A-2 Jacket-54th Troop Carrier Squadron

This A-2 jacket is identified as belonging to Captain XXXX of the 54th Troop Carrier Squadron. The spec is missing the size tag and appears to be a size 38, Tag shows mad...moree by Bronco MFG Corp., New York City. Some research has come to light that Bronco made many of the jackets for the 54th Troop Carrier Squadron. It has very worn leather rank tabs on epaulettes. There is the stitch hole evidence of leather name tag and patch appears to be a decal transfer on leather and even wear and retains some of the color. It shows hard use and age. The knit cuffs and waist band show snags, holes, and some fraying. Front zipper functions and leather shows no hardening from sweat at armpits and not splits at the leather seams and leather is still fairy supple. Printed on the projectile is “11014901” in small letters. The primer pocket is filled with a semi-hard rubber to cushion the firing pin. There is a small hole in the nose of the projectile. A white paper label with “EOD INERT” on it is on the side of the case. That is somewhat useless since the cartridge never was made with any energetic materials. There is no headstamp on the case. 2) Item Description: 40x53mm practice cartridge. Type Designator/Model: M385 Cal./Size: 1 ?-inches in diameter and 4 ?-inches high. Color: Anodized light blue with black markings. Manufacturer: Unknown Country of Origin: United States Trainer: Yes. Long Description: The projectile has been fired and is scarred as a result. Vietnam War era. 2) Item Description: 40x46mm mismatched cartridge. Type Designator/Model: N/A Cal./Size: 1 ?-inches in diameter and 4-inches high. Color: Olive drab with a silver ogive. Manufacturer: Unknown Country of Origin: United States. Long Description: This is a low velocity 40x46mm cartridge case with a high velocity M384 type projectile. The combination would not work. The heavy gilding metal rotating band would not pass thru any 40x46mm launcher and the short case would not chamber properly in a 40x53mm launcher. There are no markings on the projectile except for a handwritten “INERT” on the ogive along with a printed “INERT”. There is no headstamp on the case. Printed in black on the case is “AMM LOT MA-89H167-024” and “40MM M118 GLN88J008-016”.

Printed in black on the projectile is “CTG 40MM; PRACTICE M385”. There is one round and three cases linked together. The ogive of the projectile appears scuffed. 2) Type Designator/Model: M922 Cal./Size: 1 ?-inches in diameter and 4 ?-inches high. Color: Gold anodized Manufacturer: Unknown Country of Origin: United States Trainer: Yes. Long Description: Used to test the cycling of the high velocity weapon. Markings on the one-piece projectile are “CRTG 40MM; HIGH VEL DUMMY”. The headstamp on the cartridge case is “CASE CARTRIDGE M169; GCP85A001-003”. There are no legible markings on the case. The case has four small holes drilled in it. The case has a section of the link still attached. 3) Item Description: Fired 40x446mm aluminum cartridge case. Type Designator/Model: XM199. Cal./Size: 1 ?-inches in diameter and 1 ?-inches high Color: Green with white and black markings Manufacturer: Unknown Country of Origin: United States Trainer: No Cutaway: No Empty fired case that was loaded at Frankford Arsenal, a scarce loading facility for 40mm ammunition. This held the XM576E1 multiple projectile (Shot) loading. There is glue residue on the side and base of the case that partially obscures some markings. Markings in white on the case are “40 MM M.0.; CRTG XM576E1; AMM LOT FA-23-1; 2-69”. Markings in black on the case are “XM199???GIE-60-20 1-69”.

There are no markings on the fuze. Markings in black on the grenade are “No. 120; Federal; discharge, caution, warning and storage data”, Markings in red are “DISINTEGRATING TEAR GAS (CN) GRENADE and manufacturer’s data”. There is also a large company logo on the side. At some point a piece of masking tape has been placed on the side and old glue residue remains.

Spanish American War USS Brooklyn Fired Shell

Lot # 2064 (Sale Order: 73 of 535)      

This 57mm 6 pounder shell was fired by the Armored Crusier USS Brooklyn (ACR-3) at the Spanish Cruiser Vizcaya in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. The shell is etched by a...more sailor from the Brooklyn and dated July 3 1898 and documents it is one of the shell fired during the battle. The weapon was the Hutchkiss 6 pounder MK1 deck gun. The headstamp is marked with "N". The US Navy veteran replaced the warhead with painted piece of wood and it fits and is shaped perfectly. The USS Brooklyn was the flagship of the "Flying Squadron" and had a one on one showdown with the flagship Vizcaya for over an hour. Between the two ships, they fired over 500 times at each other until the Brooklyn got some finishing help from other ships and knocked out the Vizcaya. Overall length is 17.25" long with no dings or dents. It has been polished over the years and display very well. This is a real piece of US Navy history.

Type Design...moreator/Model: CN/X5 Cal./Size: 3-inches in diameter and 3 ¾-inches high Color: Brown. Manufacturer: Penguin Associates, Inc. Country of Origin: United States. Long Round hard plastic hand grenade. This is a blast type of grenade. Only the bottom of the container is present. The fuze safety handle is corroded. A paper label on top of the fuze states “2 Second Delay”. There is an instruction sheet inside the container, but it is partially stuck to the can and has been slightly torn. With care the sheet can no doubt be freed. The paper label on the can states “CN/X5; TEAR GAS; Grenade; BLAST DUSPERSION; made in the U.S.A. by PENGUIN ASSOCIATES, INC.; MALVERN, PENNA.; CAUTION! Read Enclosed Instructions; REPLACE AFTER APR 1968”.

Cal./Size: 2 ?-inches in diameter and 6 ½-inches high. Color: Green Manufacturer: UPCO. Country of Origin: United States A prototype smoke hand grenade. This is an 8 oz. plastic bottle with a screw-on lid. A hole in the lid is fit with an M201A1 fuze. There are four holes drilled in the plastic just below the lid. There is also a hole in the side of the bottle that appears to have been made on the inside of the bottle. There are no markings on the bottle and the paint easily chips off the plastic. Bottom is well marked and is 250ml/8 oz.
