Monumental African Nok Terracotta Figure, Daybreak TL 1500 BCE-500 CE

Monumental and Truely Magnificent Nok Female Seated Figure on custom stand. She is seated with very fine detailing and finish, minimal shell visible throughout the slip a...morend still with great detail to her necklace and features overall. Both ears elongated, hands raised at either side just above her chest, and a detailed loin cloth with ringed anklets. Nok figures and the discovery of the culture circa 1928 has indicated the remains of the Nok civilization once span a large area of Nigeria, Niger, and portions of Eastern Benin. The figures are marked by a style of elongated faces with horizontal triangular eyes and often depict warriors or important figures. The terracotta when in great condition exhibits a smooth slip and when worn the shell or white specks become visible in the layers revealed with wear and handling. DAYBREAK / Archaeometric Laboratory Services, 05/09/2002. (Notes & Photo of Object Sample #792A4.1; Nok Female Sitting Figure. 77cm H) The results of the TL include a detailed graph and readings that state the object was last fired 2460 +/- 450 years ago. It is also signed by Victor J. Bortolot, PH.D. Samples for testing are noted as being taken from two separate locations including under the right elbow and above the outside corner of the left eye. Condition: wear to slip with some visible shell through the most distinct edges. commensurate with age and condition.
