Cowan’s Auctions is proud to present their Spring 2024 Premier Arms, Armor & Militaria Sale which features a carefully curated selection of sporting and fine historical arms, including Part II of the George Oldenbourg Collection of fine presentation and identified Civil War arms.



The sale opens with some pieces of European armor, featuring a 17th Century Etched and Painted German Half Suit of Armor (Lot #3), followed by a selection of 19th century historical arms, featuring more than 50 pieces from the Oldenbourg Collection. Other highlights from the Civil War and Indian Wars periods include a Martially Marked 1st DC Cavalry Henry Rifle from the Collection of Charles Worman (Lot #77), a Rare Confederate Bilharz, Hall & Company Type 2 Carbine (Lot #70) and a Custer Range Colt Single Action Army Cavalry Revolver #5973 – A Lot 6 Delivery – Likely Picked Up at The Little Bighorn (Lot #79).

**High Quality D.M. Lefever & Co. Crossbolt SxS Hammerless 12 Gauge with Krupp Steel Barrels 12 Gauge. 30" barrel length. 15" length of pull. 1.25" drop to comb. 1.75" d...morerop to heel. 2.5" chamber length. SN: 1774. Full Chokes. Blued metal finish. Attractively figured walnut stock has multi-point and fleur-de-lis style checkering to Prince of Wales grip, wraparound beavertail forearm, and side panels. Break action side by side hammerless shotgun with a solid matte rib, and ivory bead mid-barrel and front sights. Item features extractors, single trigger with barrel selector, crossbolt, and a vented rubber recoil pad. Engravings include bank note-style floral scroll, knotwork bordering, neoclassical floral motifs, and rosette screws overall. Frame also has engraved vignettes depicting canine and fowl scenes including: two spaniels to right side, two pointers to left side, two ruffed grouse to bottom, and a single spaniel to exterior of triggerguard. Stock has an oval shaped brass or gold escutcheon to bottom of grip cap, and a brass or gold shield shaped escutcheon to bottom edge of stock. Markings include arched D-M-LEFEVER & Co/PATENTED marks to bottom of frame between trigger guard and grouse vignette. Lower tang is engraved with serial number 1774 surrounded by scrollwork. Interior of triggerguard is rollmarked with serial number 1774. Both barrels are stamped KRUPP FLUID STEEL and feature dash-dot borderwork to standing breeches, with relief engravings continuing from fences to underside of barrels. Most likely manufactured some point between 1901 and 1906. According to the Lefever Arms Collections Association, serialization for crossbolt models manufactured at the Syracuse, Defiance, or Bowling Green factories began at number "1000" in 1901, and "2174" in 1906. This lot is located in Cincinnati. Property from a Midwest Collection Condition: Good to very good. Left bore is bright, right bore is also bright but has streaks of residue throughout. Finish has a mottled appearance overall, with some light losses to finish, scattered smudges, and light scratches. Wood stock is in good condition, with some scattered light scratches and mars overall. Recoil pad shows discoloration, cracking, and some light losses to rubber. Estimate: 2000 - 3000

Improved cylinder and modified chokes. SN: 40758. Barrels appear to be bare of finish, possibly blued. Frame and parts are case hardened. Two piece walnut stock has four point checkering to Prince of Wales grip and splinter forearm. Break action side by side hammerless sidelock shotgun with a solid matte rib and brass bead front sight. Item features double triggers, ejectors, cocking indicators, snap forend, and thumb toggle safety. Hard rubber buttplate has relief molding showing an intertwined monogram that appears to read GAC. Engravings include simple floral scroll, incised line borders, rosette screws, and starbursts to frame and parts. Frame is also engraved with game scenes including a long-billed dowitcher to left side and a mallard duck to right side. Markings include LEFEVER ARMS CO. stamped to both sides of frame, and Patented 1872/ 78. 80. 85. 86. 87. to bottom of frame. Serial number 40758 is marked to lower tang, under left barrel, and to right side of water table. Barrel and water table are also marked with an F following the serial number, indicating grade of quality and finish. This lot is located in Cincinnati. Property from a Midwest Collection Condition: Good to very good. Bores are both bright. Finish is mostly bare, possibly buffed at some point as there are faint abrasions to entire length of barrels. Finish shows some small clusters of pitting and scratching overall. Wood stock shows light scratches and mars. Action is functional, but may need work as left side cocking indicator appears to get stuck and needs pushed back in after firing. Estimate: 2500 - 4000

This lot is located in Cincinnati. Condition: Very good. Bores are bright, with light drag lines and some powder residue. Finish is strong overall, with some scattered light scratches. Blued metal finish with jeweled bolt set in a highly figured walnu...moret semi-pistol grip stock mounting a J. UNERTL scope on a one-piece scope base. Bolt-action repeating rifle fed by an internal magazine. The top of the barrel displays the manufacturer marking No 1560 GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK forward of the scope base. The scope base itself features spiral scroll embellishments along the flanks of the forward ring and the rear mounting socket. Barrel shank is finely matted with border scroll flowing along the flanks. Initials ESP are deep relief engraved on the magazine floorplate and enclosed by spiral scroll borders that transition to sunburst patterns over the screw heads. Silver oval plate is installed in the toe of the stock with a cheek pad molded along the left side. A horn forend cap adorns the stock with both the wrist and forend featuring bordered multipoint checkering with 24 lines per inch. Buttplate is finely checkered with further scroll border along the edges. Item mounts a leather sling of the Model 1907 pattern, and was completed with no iron sighs and a low over bore scope mounting solution. The scope retains its screw-in lens covers and remains functional. This lot is located in Cincinnati. Property Of Dr. K. William Harter, Alexandria, VA Condition: Very Fine. Bore is Minty with crisp rifling throughout. Metal finish shows some light cycling wear to the internals with the jeweling worn down in places on the safety lug and extractor. Blued finish shows some scattered light scratches and mars. Checkering has some light handling wear with the wood finish overall retaining much of its varnish. The oval plate is tarnished, and the sling shows some scuffs, cracking, and abrasions overall. Estimate: 3000 - 5000

Blued metal finish with jeweled bolt, highly figured walnut semi...more-pistol grip stock, and engraved metal work. Bolt action internal magazine fed repeating rifle that features Griffin & Howe's side-mounted scope base marked GRIFFIN & HOWE/PAT. APPL. FOR within a fine spiral scroll border on its upper surface. Both scope rings feature similar engraving and secure a CARL ZEISS/JENA/Zielklein scope with serial number 56055. Further spiral scrollwork adorns the left flank of the scope mount and base. Top of the barrel features the maker marking No 941 GRIFFIN & HOWE, INC. NEW YORK. The iron sights are usable beneath the optic, and consist of a matted rear notch sight with three folding notches paired with a fully hooded front blade on a matted front ramp. The barrel surrounding the front sight base features border scrollwork followed by a flowing floral motif. All stock screws feature sunburst engraving with the reinforcement screw on the forend showing a sunflower motif. The magazine floorplate features the initials ESP engraved in high relief and enclosed with floral border scrollwork within diamond patterns. Schnabel forend mounts a horn cap, and both the wrist and forend feature bordered multipoint checkering with 24 lines per inch. Wood furniture shows a varnished finish overall. A cheek pad is molded into the left side of the butt, and a silver oval plate appears on the toe of the stock. The trapdoor buttplate features deep ports for cleaning equipment with fine checkering overall within decorative scrollwork. Rifle mounts a GRIFFIN & HOWE INC/NEW YORK marked leather sling patterned after the Model 1907 type suspended from engraved sling swivels. This lot is located in Cincinnati. Property Of Dr. K. William Harter, Alexandria, VA Condition: Fine. Bore is Minty with sharp rifling throughout. Metal finish shows some cycling wear to the internals with operating abrasion to the exterior of the extractor. Blued finish shows some scattered light scratches. Oval plate is tarnished. The wood stock displays handling wear and some skips to the wrist and forend. Varnished finish thinning on the wrist and forend. Scope remains functional. The scope finish shows edgewear overall with some scuffs and mars. Estimate: 3000 - 5000

Two piece English walnut stock has four point checkering to straight grip and splinter forearm, with tear drop points on both sides. Break action side by side sidelock shotgun with a solid rib and ivory bead mid and front barrel sights. Item features double triggers, ejectors, and an orange rubber recoil pad with 0.5" spacer. Stock has an oval fixture to bottom edge that appears to be gold. Frame is heavily engraved with German and bank note style scroll, with foliate and fretwork borders surrounding HOLLAND & HOLLAND markings. Triggerguard, tangs, forearm hardware, and top lever all have similar foliate engravings. Screws and hinge pins are all engraved with rosettes. Fences have neoclassical foliate style engravings as well. Barrels show border engravings to throats and there is foliate scroll to rib. Watertables are marked with serial number and {crown}/V proofs. Barrels are marked HOLLAND & HOLLAND on right barrel and 98 NEW BOND STREET, LONDON on left side. Bottom of frame is marked ROYAL/HAMMERLESS/EJECTOR. Includes a brown leather case with maroon felt interior and oiler. This lot is located in Cincinnati. Condition: Very good. Bores are both bright. Barrels possibly lightly refurbished as engravings to rib appear slightly weak compared to frame engravings. Finish is strong overall, with some of case hardened finish having worn away. Wood stock has a small 0.25" hairline crack to right side behind sideplate, and a small loss to right side of forearm near release latch. Stock has a few light scratches. Estimate: 8000 - 12000

**U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Schuetzen Type Target Rifle

**U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Schuetzen Type Target Rifle .30-06. 30" barrel length. SN: 1266212. Blued metal finish with polished bolt, half-length handguard, Schuetzen...more pattern butt and palm rest, and heavy barrel. Bolt action single shot target rifle mounting a Lyman No. 48C receiver sight and a Winchester globe aperture front sight. Item features a headless firing pin, and a hand-fitted Schnabel forend attached to the original forend with cutout for the triggerguard and fingers. The receiver is marked U.S./SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL 1903, and mounts block sight bases for Winchester and Lyman telescopic sights. The rifle displays features typical of the Model 1930 Heavy Barrel Target versions of the Springfield rifle. Aluminum Swiss-style buttplate is secured with five screws, and the forend extension is attached through the magazine cutout, rendering the rifle single shot. Stock shows front and rear reinforcing bolts with pointed panes to either side of the wrist. Semi-pistol grip cap is secured with a brass washer and bolt. Rifles of this pattern were produced by Springfield Armory and were available both to military rifle teams in the United States, and could be sold through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. As competition firearms, they were subject to extensive modification, including conversions to single-shot rifles featuring a palm rest and Schuetzen type stock, such as this example. This lot is located in Cincinnati. Condition: Very Good. Bore is Very Bright with sharp rifling throughout. Blued metal finish is thinning on the barrel bands and receiver with some light scratches on the barrel and a mottled gray to brown patina forming on the polished bolt. Wood furniture shows some light indentations and mars overall, along with some scuffs and chips to the seam of the semi-pistol grip. Estimate: 3000 - 5000

Full and modified chokes. SN: 58538. Blued metal finish to barrels and triggerguard, with bare finish to frame and parts, possibly case hardened at some point. Two piece walnut stock has multi-point checkering to straight grip and beavertail forearm, with carved tear drops to side panels, checkered butt, clamshell forend release, and a copper oval escutcheon engraved with initials DLG to bottom edge. Break action side by side hammerless sidelock shotgun with a solid matte rib and ivory bead sights to mid-barrel and front. Item features double triggers, ejectors, and thumb toggle barrel selector. Engravings include tight bank note scroll, chain link borderwork, rosette screws, and neoclassical floral motifs overall to frame and parts. Frame also features double game scene vignettes to both sides including two pointers and a marshland bird to left side, two spaniels and a duck to right side, and two ducks to bottom of frame. Fences are arcaded and have daisy flower relief engravings. Markings include LEFEVER ARMS CO banners in relief to both sides of frame, and PAT/1872./88-94/1902 to bottom of frame. Barrels are marked LEFEVER ARMS CO./KRUPP to right side and STEEL./SYRACUSE/NY. U.S.A. to left side. Bottom of barrels show Krupp steel markings and serial number. Serial number is also marked to lower tang and to water table, along with a B on water table indicating the grade of finish. According to the Lefever Arms Collector's Association, post-1905 hammerless shotguns finished with B-Grade details and a straight grip stock were called a "Pigeon Gun." This lot is located in Cincinnati. Property from a Midwest Collection Condition: Very good as refurbished. Bores are bright, with residue toward chambers. Finish on barrels most likely reapplied at some point, with all markings having a weak and faint smeared appearance and a few scattered light scratches. Frame finish is mostly bare of any finish, showing scattered light scratches, residue, and some pit marks. Wood stock has scattered light scratches and mars. There is a small 0.25" crack/loss behind frame on right side next to break lever. Butt shows some wear to heel. Action is functional. Estimate: 13000 - 20000

**High Quality C-Grade Lefever Arms Company SxS Hammerless with Damascus Steel Barrels Circa 1905 12 gauge. 30" barrels. 13.75" length of pull. 1.75" drop to comb. 3" d...morerop to heel. Full and improved modified chokes. SN: 51210. Damascus barrels with little finish remaining and a light brown patina, most likely blued, possibly buffed at some point. Two piece figured walnut stock has fancy multi-point checkering to Prince of Wales grip and splinter forearm, with arrow shaped horn inlays to both side panels. Break action side by side sidelock shotgun with a solid matte rib and steel bead front sight. Item features double triggers, cocking indicators, clamshell forearm release, ejectors, and thumb toggle safety. Stock is fitted with a horn grip cap, hard rubber buttplate, and silver oval escutcheon to bottom edge of stock. Engravings include chain link and neoclassical style borderwork, bank note floral scroll, and rosette screws overall to frame and parts. Frame is also engraved with game scene vignettes of two pointers on left side, two spaniels on right side, and two ducks to bottom of triggerguard. Markings include LEFEVER/ARMS Co. to both sides of frame, and PATENTED/1872-88-90-94-1907 to bottom of frame. Barrels are marked LEFEVER ARMS CO./DAMASCUS to right barrel, and STEEL./SYRACUSE. N.Y. U.S.A. to left barrel. Serial number is marked to lower tang. Water tables are marked with serial number and a C, indicating the grade of quality and finish. This lot is located in Cincinnati. Property from a Midwest Collection Condition: Good to very good. Bores are both bright and clean. Finish to barrels is mostly bare, with a few small pit clusters near chambers. Barrels possibly buffed at some point as some of the barrel markings are slightly weak and there are faint abrasions to most of barrel, likely from polishing. Wood stock is in good condition, with some scattered light scratches and mars. Forearm has a slight wiggle. Release lever is slightly right of center. Action is functional. Estimate: 2000 - 3000

Item comes in its original COLT marked wood print pattern cardboard box with foam liner, warranty card and multitool. Condition: Very Good. Bore is Bright with some firing residues that should clean to Very Bright or better with sharp rifling throughout. Blued finish shows some abrasions at the right side of the front sight and muzzle, scratch to left crane, and a continuous drag line. Some brown patinated streaks forming to the polished hammer flanks. Grips show some light mars along the butt. Box has some tears to the corners and flaking at edges. Action shows good timing. Estimate: 2500 - 3000
