Antique Winchester 1893 Riot Shotgun with Factory Letter

Lot # 3605 (Sale Order: 605 of 749)

Exceptional and Rare Documented Antique Winchester Model 1893 Slide Action Riot Shotgun with Factory Letter

This model was the first slide-action repeating shotgun built by Winchester and was manufactured between 1893 and 1897 with approximately 31,000 made. The 1893 was not successful as it was unable to handle modern smokeless loads, and in 1897 Winchester offered customers the option to trade in the 1893 for the new 1897. Many people took advantage of this offer and many Winchester Model 1893 shotguns were destroyed by Winchester. This shotgun is accompanied by a Winchester factory letter that indicates the serial number was applied on June 27, 1894 and confirms the 12 gauge 20 inch barrel configuration when received in the warehouse on July 10, 1894 and shipped the same day on order number 16673. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address/Model 1893 patent date and "12" at the breech, the two-line Model 1893 designation is marked on the action bar, and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame. The barrel has a 2 5/8 inch chamber and is choked cylinder. Single bead front sight. Mounted with a grooved walnut forearm and plain round knob pistol grip stock with a correct smooth unmarked blued steel shotgun buttplate. Matching assembly number "2209" located on the butt of the stock and underside of the buttplate. Length of pull is 12 7/8 inches.

Class: Antique

Excellent, retains 95% plus attractive bright original high polish blue finish with slide retraction cycling marks, a few light scratches and handling marks. Wood is also excellent with some light scratches, a few small nicks in the forend, and distinct edges overall. Mechanically excellent. A documented Winchester Model 1893 riot shotgun in such a high state of condition is extremely difficult to find, making this a rare opportunity for the Winchester collector to acquire one!
