WWI Imperial German Gewehr 98 Sniper Rifle with Scope and Case

Lot # 3482 (Sale Order: 483 of 749)

Rare World War I Imperial German Gewehr 98 Bolt Action Sniper Rifle with Scope and Scope Case

This is a fine representative example of a Gewehr 98 sniper rifle as issued by the Imperial German Army and deployed on the Western Front of World War I. Among the leaders in the field of portable optics in the days prior to World War I, the German military was among the first to experiment with equipping their infantry with optics. While the gain in effective range wasn't as good as what the evaluators hoped for, the scoped test rifles showed utility in dim and fading light conditions where conventional iron sights were all but useless. These lessons were remembered in 1914, when the invasion of France bogged down into the grim trench warfare that would define the next four years on the Western Front. Armed with a mix of civilian sporting rifles and scope-equipped Gewehr 98s, the German "Scharfschutzen" (sharpshooter) were recruited from men already familiar with optics use, and became the terror of the trenches in dusk and on clear nights. Among the first military snipers, the Scharfschutzen set many precedents for later snipers, working alone or in pairs at liberty to both maneuver and observe at their own discretion, acting as both a fatal hazard and reconnaissance asset, and demonstrating great creativity in camouflaging and protecting both themselves and their fighting positions. While donated and purchased sporting rifles performed well, they weren't rugged enough for war, nor suitable for modern spitzer rounds or the high powered armor piercing rounds issued to snipers, requiring the adoption of a modified Gewehr 98 as early as 1914. These rifles were selected by the factory and later modified by the addition of the scope bases designed for the early German sniper scopes in a few different variations, with this example correctly having a turned down bolt handle, with a set of claw mount bases dovetailed and screwed into the receiver ring and rear bridge, the former eliminating the original manufacturer marks, and wearing a correct green paint finished R. Fuess Berlin-Steglitz made Luxor 3x scope with a double claw front mount and double claw rear base/mount offset to the left. Matching full and partial serial numbers marked on the receiver, bolt and its components, barrel bands, rear sight, barrel, trigger guard, trigger guard screws, floorplate, follower, inside of the handguard, stock, and buttplate. Non-matching "28" marked on the cleaning rod. Various German acceptance proofs marked on the receiver, components and buttstock. "R. Fuess/Berlin-Steglitz/3 fach/Gew. No 4360/156ff" inscribed on the scope plate with the "4360" period arsenal crossed out and "156ff" added to match the rifle. Fitted with a correct period brown leather sling. Includes reproduction leather scope lens caps (separated leather), and an unmarked period German military style leather scope case.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very good, showing mostly a gray and brown patina with some evidence of light cleaning on the metal with otherwise defined markings, faint traces of faded original blue finish on the exposed areas and strong original blue finish showing in the protected/hidden areas beneath the stock, and some patches of light pitting. Stock is also very good with numerous scattered mild scratches, dents and scuffs characteristic of exposure to trench warfare, and visible stampings. Mechanically excellent. Scope is fine, retains 90% of its green and black painted finishes with a few chips, and slightly hazy but viewable optics. Leather scope cap straps detached/re-glued.

Originally developed in 1917 and fielded in 1918, the Model 1917, also known as the RSC 1917 (after the designers Ribeyrolles, Sutter and Chauchat), was the first semi-automatic rifle adopted by France. The RSC 1917 and subsequent RSC 1918 were phased out in the mid-20s after seeing service in the Rif War, with the majority being stripped of their gas hardware and converted to straight-pull repeaters (this example escaped this modification) for issue to colonial forces, often in North Africa. Additionally, a number found their way into the hands of the German Volksturm as last-ditch weapons during World War II. Blade front and folding ladder rear sight, with a "MA T.1917" marked barrel and no model or maker markings on the receiver. Fitted with a numbers matching hardwood forend and straight wrist stock with a flat steel buttplate. Swiss K31 Single-Shot Straight Pull Rifle in .30-06 Sprg.

Lot # 3485 (Sale Order: 486 of 749)

Very Scarce Swiss K31 Single-Shot Straight Pull Bolt Action Target Rifle in .30-06 Sprg. Reportedly Produced for The Swiss Shooting Club of Mexico

While not individually documented, this rifle is identical in configuration to a group of 20 special configuration K31 straight pull bolt action rifles which were ordered for the Swiss Shooting Club of Mexico (Schweizer Schuetzen Mexico) in the 1970s, chambered for the U.S. .30-06 Springfield cartridge instead of the standard 7.5x55 mm Swiss chambering. This was due to a Mexican government prohibition on the importation of the Swiss cartridge. However, the club was allowed to utilize surplus .30-06 ammunition sourced from the Mexican army, resulting in the request for the specific chambering. The rifles for the order were converted from existing unissued service rifles, likely by Hammerli Lenzburg, with new barrels and a "P" prefix added to the existing serial number (indicating private ownership). Due to the extra 8 mm length of the .30-06 cartridge the standard 7.5 mm Swiss magazines supplied with the rifles could not be loaded with the new chambering, limiting the rifles to single shot only. This specific example features standard winged fixed blade front and tangent rear sights, along with "F+/W" marked globe front sight attached to the standard front sight body and "F+/W" marked micrometer target peep rear sight attached to the rear of the receiver, Swiss "cross in shield" crest on top of the chamber, "86 30-06" marked barrel knox, and bright "P" prefix added in front of the serial number on the left side of the receiver. With matching serial numbers on the bolt body and magazine. Fitted in an attractive oiled smooth walnut stock with steel buttplate. Not only a standout example of a Swiss K31, but also of a reportedly limited number of rifles ordered for the Schweizer Schuetzen Mexico.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent as factory converted to a .30-06 Springfield chambered target rifle, retaining 98% plus of original arsenal deep blue finish with attractive plum coloration on the rear sight base, limited minor edge wear on the barrel bands, and limited handling marks. The stock is also excellent with rich oil finish, distinct walnut grain, crisp finger grasping grooves, and limited minor handling marks overall. Mechanically excellent.

World War II British PIAT Anti-Tank Grenade Launcher

Lot # 3486 (Sale Order: 487 of 749)

Scarce World War II British PIAT Anti-Tank Grenade Launcher

Developed in 1942, the PIAT (Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank) was the British answer to the American "Bazooka" line of weapons, essentially a giant spigot mortar, with a rod powered by a very heavy spring plunging into a round to strike a booster charge, which would both launch the round and reset the striker rod for the next shot. Integrated into the body are a set of flip up post front and 3-peep rear sights for direct fire operation, and a spirit level equipped indirect fire sight for both high and low angle fire, with a maximum listed range of 375 yards. Also fitted with a plastic pistol grip, dual canvas slings, lace-on canvas cheek rest and a steel buttplate that doubles as the charging mechanism for the internal spring with lace-on canvas recoil pad.

Class: Curio & Relic Other Firearm

Fine, with 80% of the tan paint finish, showing some scuffs, dings and areas of oxidization. The "shelf" for positioning the round to be fired shows a number of dents, and is slightly bent inward at the front. The canvas items show mild staining, with heavier stains and wear on the recoil pad. Mechanically untested.

DWM Model 1893 Borchardt Pistol with Accessories

Lot # 3487 (Sale Order: 488 of 749)

DWM Model 1893 Borchardt Semi-Automatic Pistol with Shoulder Stock, Case and Accessories

Developed by Hugo Borchardt and manufactured by Ludwig Loewe & Company (later consolidated under Loewe's Deutsche Waffen und Munitionfabriken holding company), the 1893 Borchardt was among the first semi-automatic pistols to arrive on the market. Borchardt's design introduced many mechanical principles and design concepts that would be revisited and refined by Georg Luger to make the famous "Pistole Parabellum" Model 1900, essentially making the Borchardt the forefather of about half a century of European military and commercial handguns. The most critical feature taken up by Luger was the 1893's toggle-locked short-recoil action, which gives the pistol its distinctive profile. Blade front sight and "V" notch rear sight, with the patent mark "D.R.P./No75837." on the front toggle link, "SYSTEM BORCHARDT. PATENT./DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN./BERLIN." on the right side of the receiver, and a set of "crown/letter" proofs on the barrel, chamber and toggle assembly. "747" is engraved on the underside of the spring housing. Installed on the front link is an asymmetrical smooth cocking handle with a spring loaded safety latch; intended to reduce the risk of premature unlocking, Luger would integrate a similar lock into the 1900 but eliminate it as redundant in later models. The small parts are finished in yellow straw or niter blue colors, with a set of checkered grips with smooth borders and a nickel finished magazine with a non-matching numbered base. Included with the pistol is an unnumbered shoulder stock with black leather holster and detachable cheek rest, extra unnumbered magazine, wood hold-open device/cleaning rod holder, and a black leatherette transport case.

Class: Antique

Very fine, with 85% plus original blue finish, showing areas of brown and gray patina, scattered scratches and handling marks, and some light spotting. Strong and bright color is present on the small parts, with a gray patina and mild spotting on the safety latch and right sideplate. The grips are also very fine, with some minor dings. Accessories are all very good as modern reproductions, showing minor wear and handling. Mechanically excellent.

DWM 1900 Commercial Semi-Automatic Luger Pistol

Lot # 3488 (Sale Order: 489 of 749)

Scarce DWM 1900 Commercial Semi-Automatic Luger Pistol

This is an excellent example of a desirable early-production DWM Model 1900 Commercial Luger pistol. These pistols were the true first commercial contract Luger pistols produced by DWM and can be found in the 2000-19000 serial number range, with this specific pistol being an earlier production pistol. These pistols were specifically intended for sales in the U.S. market, which is why "GERMANY" is marked on the front of frame under the serial number. This pistol has all the early desirable Luger features, such as the early long frame with the "Crown over B/U" proofs, dished toggles with toggle lock on the right side, recessed breechblock, 4 3/4 inch fast tapered barrel, grip safety and no stock lug. This specific pistol was fitted with the later and desirable hold-open device. They had superb hand fitted parts with the pre-war high polish rust blue finish with the straw colored small parts and checkered walnut grips. The lower safety area is unmarked and left with the bright polished. It is correctly serial numbered in the commercial fashion with the serial number under the barrel and on the front of the frame. It is complete with one original magazine with the nickel plated body and the unnumbered wooden base.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent with 90% plus of the original blue finish, with wear and blue loss on the edges and high spots overall with a small spot of pitting on the left side of the barrel with the blue finish on the grip straps just starting to oxidize out. The various small parts retain 60% plus of their straw colors with most of the finish loss on the face of the trigger itself. The grips are also excellent with nice checkering on both grip panels and a small pressure dent on the right side directly behind the magazine release button. The pistol has all matching numbered parts with the firing pin and magazine both correctly unnumbered. A nice example of a scarce DWM 1900 Commercial Luger pistol.
