Swinburn & Son Patent Jacob Rifles Combination Gun

Lot # 3325 (Sale Order: 326 of 749)

Scarce Swinburn & Son Patent Jacob Rifle Combination Gun

Manufactured in 1861. The Jacob rifle was invented by General John Jacob. An officer of the British East India Company, Jacob commanded a cavalry regiment called the 36th Jacob's Horse. He invented the rifle with the aim of firing explosive "caisson killer" bullets to knock out enemy artillery at long range. He wrote, "Judging from our practice at Jacobabad, it seems certain that two good riflemen so armed, could in 10 minutes, annihilate the best Field Battery of Artillery now existing." A well-placed shot into a caisson would cause a large explosion that could destroy both an artillery piece and its crew. He intended to arm the 1st Regiment Jacob's Rifles with his distinctive double rifles, but he died before the order for the rifles was filled. Some do appear to have been issued to the unit, and the rifles saw at least limited use in the American Civil War, including by chaplain Lorenzo Barber of the Berdan Sharpshooters with one barrel loaded with buckshot and the other with a solid projectile. This example has the distinctive four-groove rifling in the 32 bore left barrel for a winged bullet, and the right barrel has been bored out to 16 bore smoothbore and lacks the usual lug for mounting a sword bayonet. The stock also has a checkered wrist. The lock plates are each marked "SWINBURN & SON/PATENT/1861." The patchbox is marked "JACOB'S RIFLES" and contains some winged bullets. Behind the ladder rear sight, which is graduated to 2,000 yards not including the top notch, is a three leaf express sight graduated for 100 to 300 yards.

Class: Antique

Fine with 75% plus of the period reblued finish on the barrels, patches of bright original case colors, gray and brown patina on the balance, patches of mild pitting, and general mild wear. The period refinished stock is also fine and has crisp checkering and mild scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.

This distinctive sporting gun dating from the mid-18th century has an elaborate Damascus smoothbore barrel in the Ottoman style with silver blade front sight, silver inlays and bands, an indistinct brass-lined maker's mark towards the breech, and steel tang. This form of barrel proved popular in Europe following the relief of the Siege of Vienna in 1683 with imitations of captured Ottoman barrels remaining fashionable into the mid-18th century. The flat beveled lock is signed "MAY/A/MANHEIM" beneath the faceted priming-pan and has a stepped tail. The mounts are brass with foliate finials including the heel-plate tang which is also engraved with the coat of arms of the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt. It has an old collection tag that reads “Nr. 35 Steinschl. Gewehr a Nr. 635.” Associated horn-tipped ramrod. Notes from the Norman R. Blank Collection indicate this gun came from Jagdschloss Kranichstein and that W. Keith Neal purchased it through Hans Schedelmann on August 16, 1959. Jagdschloss Kranichstein had belonged to the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt and Grand Dukes of Hesse. The last Grand Duke consolidated the arms collection at Jagdschloss Kranichstein in 1917.

Very Scarce Documented Fine Pair of Engraved, Carved, Gold-Inlaid and Silver-Mounted Durs Egg Double Barrel Flintlock Pistols with Hallmarks for 1784 -A) D. Egg Double Barrel Pistol
One of the pistols from this pair is listed as No. 149 in the 1971 Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition catalog, "Early Firearms of Great Britain and Ireland from the Collection of Clay P. Bedford", p. 139 and illustrated on p. 141, and the text attributes the "M-B" silversmith mark to Moses Brent. The London silver hallmarks date to 1784 providing an approximate year of manufacture for the pistols. They feature side by side smoothbore browned Damascus barrels each with silver blade front sight on the rib and "D. Egg" and "London" signed in script at the breech ends of the barrels, engraved gold bands at the breeches, gold vent liners, and London proof marks struck on the underside. The locks are each signed "D Egg" and have semi-rainproof priming-pans, rollers on the frizzens, stepped tails, sliding half-cock safeties, and engraving consisting of lined borders and sunburst, floral, and bird motifs. The grooved standing breeches have coordinating engraving. The silver mounts feature primarily floral patterns along with a martial trophy on the trigger-guard bows. The half-stocks have diamond-shaped checkered butts with carved accents and raised relief floral carving at the top of the wrists. They are fitted with metal ramrods with checkered tips. Purchased by Norman R. Blank from the Wilfrid Ward Collection at Christie’s, 27 October 1993, lot 98.

This pair of pistols from circa 1840 would have fit a coat pocket nicely for personal defense and features smoothbore, browned, Damascus barrels with brass cone front sights, "BAKER, LONDON." signed on top, and swivel mounted ramrods underneath. The casehardened breech plugs have floral engraving on the bolsters, single gold inlaid bands, and scroll engraving on top. The standing breech has a notch rear sight and scroll engraving. Cayley Esq/H.M.S. Rodney/Malta" in black ink. The second-rate ship of the line HMS Rodney was launched in 1833 and was primarily based in the Mediterranean Sea. During the Crimean War, it served in the Black Sea. It is noted as the last unarmored wooden battleship in full commission in the Royal Navy. Charles Digby Cayley (1827-1844) was the youngest son of Liberal MP Edward Stillingfleet Cayley (1802-1862) for the North Riding of Yorkshire and Emma Cayley (1797-1848), daughter of Baronet George Cayley (1773-1857) of aeronautical science fame. Charles Cayley studied at Eton and became a midshipman in the Royal Navy. The Morning Chronicle of London on May 23, 1844, noted Cayley as having "distinguished himself in the Rodney, on the coast of Syria, and had, with others been awarded a medal for the victories at Acre and other places on that coast. The sailing-boat in which he and his companion (Jewell) were lost, seems to have gone down suddenly in a squall, head foremost, taking these two promising youths, devoted to the service of their country, down with it, never to rise again." Cayley was assigned to the HMS Shearwater at the time of his death. The Shearwater was a government surveying steamer then under the command of Captain Charles Robinson.
