Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3054 (Sale Order: 55 of 749)

Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Special Order Extra Length Barrel

Known simply as “The Gun that Won the West,” the Winchester Model 1873 Rifle stands as an icon of American firepower on the open frontier that still resonates with modern collectors. The Model 1873 was a working gun that saw hard use. It was often paired with a Colt Single Action Army or other revolver chambered for the popular .44-40 W.C.F. cartridges. This made carrying ammunition for both your rifle and your revolver simple and allowed an individual to be ready to defend themselves against man or beast in a variety of tough situations. This well cared for example was manufactured in 1883 and has a factory special order 26 inch barrel (standard length was 24 inches). According to Winchester expert and author George Madis, "one of each 600 rifle had a barrel longer than standard' (see "The Winchester Book, page 212). The rifle is fitted with a dovetail front sight base (blade absent) and an elevation adjustable rear sight on a barrel stamped with the two-line Winchester legend. The rifle lacks a caliber designation. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873." The serial number is on the lower tang. The buttstock is fitted with a trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included). Mounted with nicely figured walnut forearm and straight grip stock.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel, magazine tube, and forend cap retain 50% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance and some scattered spotting. The receiver shows abrasive scratches and retains 30% original blue finish. Traces of original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The wood is very good with numerous scattered handling marks. Mechanically excellent.

Marlin Model 1881 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3058 (Sale Order: 59 of 749)

Marlin Model 1881 Lever Action Rifle

The Model 1881 was the first lever action introduced by Marlin, and only 20,535 were manufactured between 1881 and 1892 compared to 63,871 of the Winchester Model 1876 it competed with. The Marlin was the stronger gun and could chamber the popular .45-70 Govt. cartridge, and it found buyers in the American West as is clearly shown in advertisements in the Dakotas, Montana, and elsewhere in the 1880s. This example has an early production three digit serial number (438) stamped on the underside of the receiver and third style two-line barrel legend ending with "REISSUE NOV. 9, 1880." The rifle is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The caliber designation "40 CAL" is stamped on the top barrel flat at the breech. The forearm and straight grip stock are nicely figured plain walnut.

Class: Antique

Very good, retaining 20% plus original blue finish with smooth brown-gray patina associated with a well traveled long gun on the balance. Traces of original nitre blue remain on the loading gate. The refinished wood is very good with a tiny chip at the upper tang and minimal handling marks. Mechanically excellent.

Bullard Repeating Arms Co. Large Frame Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3059 (Sale Order: 60 of 749)

Bullard Repeating Arms Co. Large Frame Lever Action Rifle

An estimated 10,000-12,000 Bullard repeating rifles and carbines were manufactured between 1886 and 1890 in numerous variations. They used a rack and pinion design that is smoother than the toggle link used on most lever actions and were very well made firearms. Theodore Roosevelt is even known to have used one. Unfortunately, Bullard simply jumped into the lever action market too late to successfully compete with Winchester and Marlin. This example is a large frame sporting rifle that has been re-chambered to 40-65 caliber. The barrel is non-factory stamped "40 65" at the breech, and the receiver is stamped "CAL/45" followed by the hand marked number "65" for the .40-65 caliber designation. The left side of the receiver has the two-line address/patent dates marking. Fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The serial number is stamped behind the hammer. Upper tang is drilled and tapped for sight mounting. Smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock, and the buttplate has a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fine as rechambered (see above), retaining 70% original glue finish with thinning to brown on the balance and touch up blue on the buttplate. 20% original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The refinished wood is very good with a stress line on the forearm at the cap and some scattered handling marks. Mechanically fine.

Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Lightweight Takedown Lever Action Short Rifle with Scarce 22 Inch Barrel

Manufactured in 1902 with a short rifle 22 inch, rapid taper, lightweight barrel. 22 inch barrels on Model 1894s are a very scarce special order feature even on the lightweight examples. Out of the first 353,999 Model 1894s produced that the Cody Firearms Museum has the Winchester records for, only 2,252 had 22 inch barrels (per included copy of page 16 to the excerpt from the ARMAX Cody Firearms Museum journal rarity study). The rifle also has special order deluxe forearm and pistol grip stock with "H" style checkering. This is a highly sought after variation of the famed Model 1894. The rifle is fitted with a combination Beach front sight, an elevation adjustable rear sight, and a folding tang peep sight. The top of the barrel has the two-line Winchester legend ahead of the rear sight and "30 WCF" at the breech. The left side of the barrel has the nickel steel marking. Special Order Factory Half Nickel Winchester Model 1873 Rifle

Lot # 3063 (Sale Order: 64 of 749)

Documented Special Order Factory Half Nickel Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle in .22 Short with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1891, this is a fine, desirable example of a documented special order Winchester deluxe Model 1873 in .22 Short. These .22 RF Model 1873s were basically the same as the famous "gun that won the West" without the loading gate. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .22 caliber with an octagon barrel, plain trigger, half nickel finish, and a plain, checkered, pistol grip stock when received at the warehouse on 19 September 1891 and shipped two days later in order number 10557. The top flat of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and King's patent marking while the caliber marking is at the breech and repeated on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The model marking is on the upper tang, and the serial number is on the lower tang. The left side of the lower tang is marked "XX 310 CF" which was peened out at the factory and is additionally marked "336". The stock inlet is marked "4856", and the toe of the buttplate is marked "2". Considering the factory letter and the peened out number, it appears the configuration of this rifle was changed before it left the warehouse, as both the forearm and stock appear to have been fitted to the rifle for quite some time and were not renumbered to match the assembly numbers before it left the warehouse. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable buckhorn/sporting rear sight. It is mounted with a straight grain, H-pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with an ebony insert and a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 40% of the original blue finish with the balance mostly a plum-brown patina and 70% of the original nickel finish with some scattered light flaking. There is a series of minor peen marks on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The wood is very good with the stock checkering recut, the forearm checkering well-worn, and otherwise some scattered light handling marks. Mechanically fine.

This example was manufactured in 1890 as a Third Model with integral dust cover rail on top of the stepped down receiver and dust cover with gripping serrations at the rear. The standard two-line address/King's patent marking is on the top barrel flat along with the caliber marking. The upper tang is marked with the model designation and the lower tang has the serial number. It is fitted with German silver blade front and elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sights. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration as well as shipment on 21 August 1890.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 70% plus of the original blue finish, strong traces of the original case colors on the hammer, and 60% of the original nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance having thinned to mostly a brown patina and a few scattered small patches of light patina. The refinished wood is very good with some scattered minor handling marks and a minor sliver absent from the upper left of the wrist. Mechanically fine apart from the magazine follower which is jammed inside the magazine tube.
