Special Order Winchester Semi-Deluxe Model 1894 Takedown Rifle

Lot # 3025 (Sale Order: 26 of 749)

Desirable Special Order Winchester Semi-Deluxe Model 1894 Lever Action Takedown Rifle with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1898 according to Madis. This is a scarce, documented example of a special order Winchester "semi-deluxe" Model 1894 takedown rifle. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .30 caliber with a half octagon barrel, plain trigger, sporting rear and Lyman combination front and rear sights, and a plain checkered pistol grip stock when received at the warehouse on 1 August 1901 and shipped the same day in order number 103555. The upper left flat of the barrel and the receiver have Winchester factory oval proofs, indicating that the rifle was returned to the factory for some sort of work after 1903. It is possible that the rifle was converted to takedown at this time, or that the takedown feature simply wasn't originally listed in the ledger. The top barrel flat has the standard two-line Winchester address and the caliber marking at the breech, while the two-line nickel steel marking is on the upper left. The upper tang has the three-line model, trademark, and patent information. The left side of the lower tang is marked "12416 CF", with "12416" repeated inside the buttplate and on the butt of the stock along with "94". There is a discreet import mark. It is fitted with a Lyman combination front sight, elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight, and a Lyman mid-range peep sight mounted on the upper tang. It is mounted with a faintly figured, I-pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Very fine, retains 70% plus of the original blue finish, 75% of the vibrant case colors on the sides of the lever and hammer, and faint nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina and some scattered speckled spotting on the receiver. The wood is fine with some scattered light handling marks, a patch of varnish absent at the front right of the wrist where it meets the receiver, a discreet interior stabilizing pin, and well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Lot # 3026 (Sale Order: 27 of 749)

Fine Antique Second Year Production Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable .44-40 W.C.F.

Manufactured in 1893, the second year of production, this is a very fine example of a standard configuration Winchester Model 1892 rifle. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and the caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line model, trademark, and patent information, and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable buckhorn/sporting rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 70% of the original blue finish, 30% of the faint original case colors, and strong traces of the original nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance having thinned to a smooth grey patina and a few scattered small spots of brown oxidation. Winchester Model 1886 Lightweight Takedown Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3027 (Sale Order: 28 of 749)

Documented Antique Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lightweight Takedown Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1896, this Winchester deluxe Model 1886 rifle appears to show the very interesting Winchester factory process of using existing warehouse stock or previously manufactured receivers to be reconfigured or assembled to fulfill special orders. The included factory letter lists the serial number application date as 8 June 1896 and that the rifle was in .33 caliber with a round barrel, set trigger, Lyman receiver "leaf and Jack", half magazine, checkered pistol grip stock with a rubber shotgun buttplate and oil finish, and in takedown configuration when received at the warehouse on 16 October 1903 and shipped the next day in order number 204634. The barrel has the lightweight profile and is chambered in .33 W.C.F. The .33 W.C.F. cartridge was introduced in 1902, and it was the only caliber for the Model 1886 originally introduced as a smokeless cartridge. It is likely that this rifle was sitting in the Winchester warehouse in a configuration that was more difficult to sell, possibly even a previously cancelled special order, when it was pulled and reconfigured by the factory to fulfill this customer's special order. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and the caliber marking at the breech, as well as the two-line nickel steel marking offset on the left. The upper tang has the model marking and the two line patent dates and serial number are on the lower tang. The left side of the lower tang "1080 XX 184", with "184" repeated in the stock inlet. It is very possible that the "1080 XX" corresponds to a previous special order which was cancelled before the rifle left the warehouse and that the "184" was added in 1903 when the rifle was reconfigured and sent off to its new home. It is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight, elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight, Lyman peep sight mounted on the left of the receiver, a half magazine, and a "close-coupled" set trigger. It is mounted with a finely figured, H-pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber grip cap and the "extra lightweight" hollow in the butt concealed by the hard rubber shotgun buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 50% plus of the original blue finish and faint traces of the original case colors on the hammer and lever with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina and a few scattered spots of very light surface pitting. The wood is very good with some scattered minor handling marks, a small spot of age-related grain separation, and a well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Exceptional Winchester Model 1895 Rifle in .405 Winchester

Lot # 3028 (Sale Order: 29 of 749)

Exceptional Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable .405 Winchester

This is an outstanding Winchester Model 1895 lever action rifle that was manufactured in 1911 and chambered for the very desirable .405 W.C.F. cartridge. The .405 W.C.F. was one of the most powerful cartridges ever developed for a lever action rifle. Introduced in 1904, the powerful .405 cartridge was capable of taking most African game. Former president Theodore Roosevelt used a Winchester Model 1895 Express rifle extensively on his famous African safari and pronounced: "the Winchester .405 is, at least for me personally, the Medicine Gun for lions". The rifle has a 24 inch round barrel with Express style front sight with gold bead and Lyman two-leaf, folding Express rear sight. One leaf has a large "v" notch and the second leaf has a flat top with white triangle. A Lyman "WR-WT" receiver sight with locking lever is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The top of the receiver is matted. Winchester swivel eyes for detachable sling swivels are mounted on the underside of the stock and barrel. The rifle has a full blue finish with color case hardened hammer. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The forearm has a an ebony inlay on the tip and the stock has a shotgun style buttplate. The black hard rubber buttplate is checkered and has the Winchester logo in a circle in the center. The left side of the barrel is roll stamped "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" between the rear sight and the receiver. The barrel marking is followed by the caliber designation "405 WCF" just ahead of the receiver. The oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark is stamped on the top of the barrel and on the top of the receiver to the left of the matting. The Winchester two-line legend and patent markings are roll stamped on the left side of the receiver beneath the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll stamped "MODEL 1895/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE REG. IN U.S.PAT.OFF.". The serial number is stamped across the lower receiver tang behind the trigger.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent plus. The rifle retains 98% of the bright original blue finish overall. The sides of the magazine have only faint cycling marks indicating that the rifle has seen only limited and careful handling. The barrel and receiver marking are also excellent. The stock and forearm are in the same excellent plus condition and show only very limited handling and storage wear. The is an exceptional example of the very desirable Winchester Model 1895 rifle in .405.

Special Order Winchester Deluxe First Model 1873 Rifle

Lot # 3031 (Sale Order: 32 of 749)

Exceptional Documented Special Order Winchester Deluxe First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Casehardened Receiver and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1876 as a First Model with integral dust cover grooves on either side of the ejection port and dust cover with checkered "thumbprint" grip area. Only around 31,000 of these First Models were manufactured, with deluxe, special order examples like this one being even more rare. The included factory letter lists the rifle with a half octagon barrel, plain trigger, XXX checkered stock, and casehardened finish when received at the warehouse on 22 May 1876 and shipped the same day in order number 5836. According to George Madis in "The Winchester Book", one of every 900 rifles had a part octagon barrel, one of every 600 had special wood, and one of every 700 had checkering. Madis does not list the rarity of casehardened finishes, but they are comparatively quite scarce. This early production example correctly lacks caliber markings, as .44-40 W.C.F. was the only caliber offered until 1879. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line address and King's patent marking. The model designation is marked on the upper tang and the serial number is on the lower tang. The left side of the lower tang is marked with the assembly number "XXX 4859", with "4859" repeated in the stock inlet and inside the buttplate. It is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight and a later production replacement elevation adjustable notch rear sight. The receiver has a special order casehardened finish. It is mounted with a finely figured forearm and straight grip stock featuring a variation of the G pattern checkering noted by Madis and a trapdoor crescent buttplate containing a four-piece cleaning rod.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine, retains 85% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel, 80% of the vibrant original case colors, and 80% plus of the original nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina and some traces of a protective varnish throughout. A few dings are visible on both sides of the breech of the barrel. The wood is very fine with a few scattered light handling marks, some light crazing of the finish, and a few minor blemishes in the in the otherwise crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

This rare documented experimental Winchester Model 61 was manufactured in 1936. Non-standard blade front and elevation adjustable sporting notch rear sights, first style barrel inscription, Winchester "WP" proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech, matching numbers on the receiver and trigger guard assembly, factory drilled and tapped upper tang with filler screws in place. The purpose of the screws is unknown. 11 groove slide handle and smooth pistol grip stock with checkered steel buttplate. In his included 3-page letter Winchester expert and author George Madis states, "I have carefully examined this rare Winchester inside and out and have determined it is an original experimental rifle with other additional rare features." Madis notes the rare octagon barrel in .22 Short as standard Model 61s had a round barrel in .22 SL LR as well as the "rarest feature," the experimental grip safety. Madis wrote, "Winchester experimented with safeties of this type, but they were never put in production. This safety works in addition to the regular safety located in the front of the trigger guard. When the regular safety is off, the gun will not fire unless the grip safety is depressed....With the rare barrel, caliber, condition, age and one-of-a-kind safety, this is a great Winchester and it merits a prominent place in any collection or museum." The Madis letter has been professionally framed.

Deluxe Winchester "Centennial" Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 3037 (Sale Order: 38 of 749)

Stunning Documented Special Order Straight Grip Deluxe Open Top Winchester "Centennial" Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The Model 1876 was only manufactured in 1876-1897, and production was limited to just 63,871 rifles. These were sought after by serious big game hunters, including Theodore Roosevelt, as the recognized the increased firepower and the ability for fast follow-up shots could be vital. It earned the nickname the "Centennial Model" as it was debuted during the one hundredth year of American Independence and in time for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The included factory letters lists this rifle with a half-octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered stock, 1/2 magazine, and casehardened finish. It is noted as received in the warehouse on September 21, 1878, and shipped that same day in order 13151 and also lists a repair date of May 8, 1886, in order 6292. This rifle is well into the "Second Model" range but remains an "Open Top" without any provisions dust cover. After approximately serial number 1,600, dust covers were an option, but they do not appear to have become common until after serial number 3,000.

Winchester Prototype Model 1902 Single Shot Bolt Action Pistol

Lot # 3039 (Sale Order: 40 of 749)

Historic Documented Winchester Prototype Model 1902 Single Shot Bolt Action Pistol with Relief Carved Stock Attributed to U.S. Army General Abel Davis

This serial number 3 pistol is one of less than an estimated 100 prototype pistols based on the Model 1900/1902 rifle action and manufactured during the early 1900s as Winchester explored the idea of making a single shot pistol based on the actions of these popular rifles. It has standard Model 1902 rifle markings on the barrel, Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and bolt, and is fitted with blade front and notch rear sights. The stock is carved with floral motifs. Madis discusses the previously mentioned prototype pistols in "The Winchester Book". It is possible that some of these prototypes were retained by factory employees. The consignor notes that this specific pistol was presented to U.S. Army Brigadier General Abel Davis, recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross and Medal for actions in World War I, before being passed down to his son and grandson.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Savage Prototype Model 1905/1907 Single Shot Bolt Action Pistol

Lot # 3040 (Sale Order: 41 of 749)

Unique Documented Savage Prototype Model 1905/1907 Single Shot Bolt Action Pistol as Pictured in "Savage Pistols" by Bailey Brower Jr.

In the early 1900s, multiple American arms manufacturing companies, including Winchester and Savage, were exploring the idea of manufacturing a single shot bolt action pistol in the increasingly popular .22 cartridges of the time. Winchester produced multiple prototypes based on the actions of their popular .22 bolt action models, many of which have recently been offered here at Rock Island Auction Company. Around the same time, in an effort to not fall behind one of their biggest competitors, Savage also started to develop some prototype single shot .22 pistols, with this example being one of them. Neither Winchester or Savage ever pushed these prototypes to full production, making these developmental pistols incredibly scarce. This very interesting example is pictured and described on p. 180 of "Savage Pistols" by Bailey Brower, Jr. It is a very clear attempt by the Savage factory to combine two of their existing models, a Model 1905 rifle and a Model 1907 pistol. The frame is very clearly that of a Savage Model 1907 pistol with the magazine components modified to accept the receiver of a Model 1905 rifle and "pencil" profiled barrel. It is fitted with blade and notch sights and a standard Model 1907 checkered hard rubber grip on the right, while the left grip is absent, likely to allow viewing of the internal trigger mechanism. Also included is a letter from Bailey Brower, Jr. where he states that the pistol was acquired from Michael Carney, a well-known gun dealer in the Syracuse/Utica area of New York. He states that Carney had access to the Savage Research & Development storeroom, from which he purchased many rare Savage firearms. Carney and Savage historian Roe Clark estimated that Savage likely only produced three or four of these rare prototypes before abandoning their efforts to push such a pistol to full production.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine as a factory prototype, showing mostly a bright grey patina overall with some traces of the original blue finish which was likely removed at the factory during development, and some scattered small patches of the light pitting. The one grip panel present is excellent with only the slightest handling marks and crisp checkering. Decocks upon closing the bolt, otherwise mechanically excellent.

Provenance: The Bailey Brower, Jr. Collection, author of “Savage Pistols”

Special Order Winchester First Model 1873 Rifle

Lot # 3044 (Sale Order: 45 of 749)

Highly Desirable Documented Antique Special Order Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Extra Length Barrel and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1876, this is an exceptional example of a special order Winchester First Model 1873 rifle. The included factory letter lists the rifle with a special order 28 inch octagon barrel and a set trigger when received at the warehouse on 26 February 1876 and shipped 3 September 1877 in order number 9689. This rifle certainly strikes the figure of one ordered by a discerning customer, whose priority was longer range accuracy without frills. The desirable First Model receiver has the integral dust cover guides on either side of the ejection port and the final form of First Model dust cover with the 5/8 inch finely checkered "impressed thumbprint" grip area. The 28 inch barrel on this example is a rare and desirable feature, with noted Winchester author George Madis noting that only one out of every 600 Model 1873 rifles was ordered with a longer than standard barrel. Along with the desirable extra length barrel, this rifle is also fitted with a set trigger, which Madis notes as ordered on one out of every 26 rifles. The top barrel flat is marked with the standard two-line Winchester address and King's patent marking, and the breech correctly lacks a caliber marking, as early in production .44 W.C.F. was the only caliber offered. The upper tang has the standard model, marking and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. The left side of the lower tang is marked with the special order assembly number "646", which is repeated in the stock inlet and on the inside of the toe of the buttplate. The left side of the lower tang and upper tang are additionally marked "7", the meaning of which is unknown, but it may correspond to the last digit of the serial number or the year of shipment. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight, elevation adjustable sporting rear sight with correctly checkered edges, and a Winchester long range peep sight mounted on the upper tang. It is mounted with a straight grain, smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor crescent buttplate containing a four-piece cleaning rod.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine, retains 85% plus of the original high polish blue finish, 75% of the vibrant case colors on the lever and hammer, and 95% of the bright nitre blue on the loading gate with some light edge wear, some scattered light handling marks, and a few scattered spots of very limited pinprick type surface pitting on the lever and hammer. The wood is very fine with a few scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. This is an exceptional Winchester First Model 1873 rifle with sought after special order features that would make an excellent addition to your collection!

"38 CAL." is roll stamped in script on the brass cartridge elevator. There is no serial number on the bottom or sides of the lower tang. The writer has no explanation for the aforementioned unusual feature. The assembly number "1600" is stamped on the inside of the upper tang inlet of the stock and on the inside of the buttplate.

Arabic Inscribed Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket

Lot # 3047 (Sale Order: 48 of 749)

Arabic Inscribed Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket

Manufactured in 1874 and featuring a barley corn front sight that doubles as the lug for a socket bayonet (not included). standard two-line address and King's patent marking on top of the barrel, notch and folding ladder rear sight graduated out to 900 yards on the ladder, "S" on top of the barrel at the breech, the serial number on the frame behind the trigger, an Arabic inscription on the left side plate and another on the buttplate, musket forearm and buttstock with an unclear cartouche on the left near the heel, and a modern russet leather sling. The side plate's inscription appears to translate to "A gift from the Saudi Arabian Army to Commander Roy Roberts. Tabuk." The buttplate inscription's meaning is unclear. This may related to U.S. Sergeant Roy Roberts who participated in Operation Desert Storm. There was also Lt. Colonel Roy Austin Roberts (1933-2021) who served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1976 and is noted as having been stationed in Saudi Arabia.

Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Short Rifle

Lot # 3049 (Sale Order: 50 of 749)

Very Fine Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Short Rifle with Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter lists this desirable Winchester Model 1876 short rifle with a 22 inch round barrel, plain trigger, and shotgun butt when received in the warehouse on December 18, 1883 and shipped on December 22. In the data discussed on page 253 of "The Winchester Book ," noted Winchester expert George Madis notes that only one of each 800 had a shorter than average barrel. Many Model 1876 short rifles were shipped to England and then found their way to Africa and India, where they were often employed against big cats. This example has London proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. The rifle is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and an "1876" marked folding ladder rear sight. The receiver is a third model. The top of the barrel has the two-line Winchester legend ahead of the rear sight. The rifle correctly lacks a caliber designation. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1876." A non-factory period installed sling eyelet with ring is mounted on the underside of the stock.

Very fine, retaining 70% plus bright original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. 20% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The hammer and lever retain 60% original case colors. The wood is also very fine with some very scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. An attractive example of a desirable Winchester Model 1876 lever action short rifle.
