Winter War Era Soviet Tula Arsenal Tokarev SVT-38 Rifle

Lot # 1430 (Sale Order: 431 of 674)

Desirable Winter War Era Soviet Tula Arsenal Tokarev SVT-38 Semi-Automatic Rifle

This SVT-38 semi-automatic rifle was manufactured by Tula arsenal in 1940. The Tokarev rifles were manufactured throughout World War II by both the Tula and Izhevsk arsenals, although these earlier SVT-38 models are far less commonly encountered today than the SVT-40 that superseded it. Approximately 150,000 SVT-38s were reportedly manufactured before April of 1940 as opposed to 1,600,000 SVT-40s manufactured. The SVT-38 rifles were rushed into service to see their initial combat use in the Winter War (November 30th, 1939-March 13th, 1940) in which the Soviet Union attempted to invade Finland. The short-lived SVT-38 was used with limited success, with many lost on the snow covered battlefield and many others captured by Finland; in part due to its tendency to jam as well as issues with the magazine falling out during live fire, which was corrected in the SVT-40. The top of the receiver and right of the stock both have the Tula arsenal star above "1940" date. Features a six slot muzzle brake, bayonet lug, standard military hooded front sight and tangent rear sight graduated 1-15 (100-1,500 meters), birchwood stock with ventilated handguard and right side mounted cleaning rod, and short perforated metal forend. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the original Cyrillic prefix serial number (transliterated: DM1965). The bolt, charging handle/bolt carrier, trigger guard and stock are factory stamped and matching serial numbered, and the correct 10-round replacement magazine is numbered "CB990.1" (transliterated: SV990.1). Includes a brown leather sling.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine, retains 60% original blue finish with brown and gray patina on the balance and some scattered areas of light pitting indicative of period use in snow, 20% arsenal applied plum blue finish on the bolt and bolt carrier, and 60% arsenal refurbished blue finish on the replacement magazine. Stock is also very good with general mild wear, and some scattered light scratches and dents. Mechanically excellent.

Outstanding World War II Canadian Long Branch No. 4 Mk I* Bolt Action Sniper Rifle with Scope

Manufactured in Canada by Long Branch of Ontario, this is an outstanding 1945 production Long Branch SMLE No. 4 Mk I* (T) sniper rifle. These rifles were used by both the British and Canadian armies during World War II and the Korean War. The rifle correctly has a rear sight without battle aperture that was fitted to British and Canadian No. 4 Mk I (T) sniper rifles along with the distinctive quick detachable telescopic sight mount. The left of the receiver is marked "No 4 Mk I*T/Long Branch/1945". The serial number, "71L0509" is marked on the left of the butt socket and on the rear of the bolt handle. "672-c" stamped on top of the stock wrist area, with small stamps on the bottom of the wrist area as well as the bottom front of the forend area. The scope tube is marked on top "TEL.STG.No 32 Mk 3/OS.2039A.(maker logo)No19098" in two lines. The scope mount is numbered "B34625" on the left , and both scope rings are correctly matched in sequence. It is complete with a set of original World War II British issue leather scope caps. With cleaning rope and oiler in the buttstock compartment.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent overall, nearly as issued, retains 98% plus original Canadian wartime blue finish, attractive rich original oil finish on the stock with minimal handling evidence and distinct edges and stampings overall. WWII Soviet Tula Arsenal Tokarev SVT-40 Rifle

Lot # 1432 (Sale Order: 433 of 674)

World War II Soviet Tula Arsenal Tokarev SVT-40 Semi-Automatic Rifle

The top of the receiver and right of the stock have the Tula arsenal star factory mark over the date "1941". The original Cyrillic prefix serial number (transliterated as "PYa5386") is on the left of the receiver with factory stamped and matching serial number on the bolt, charging handle/bolt carrier, trigger guard, and left side of stock. Star Model P Semi-Automatic Pistol in .45 ACP

Lot # 1433 (Sale Order: 434 of 674)

Rare Early Production, 1924 Dated Star Model P Semi-Automatic Pistol in .45 ACP

Manufactured from 1923 to 1931, these Model P pistols were based heavily on John Browning's design for the Model 1911 pistol and were intended for use by the Spanish military. This is one of only approximately 11,168 Model P pistols manufactured. With many being exported to South America or seeing hard use during the Spanish Civil War, these pistols very rarely come up on the American collector's market. This example is marked with its "1924" manufacture date on the top rear of the slide. The left side of the slide is marked "BONAFACIO ECHEVERRIA EIBAR -ESPANA- STAR CAL. 45" with a Spanish rampant lion proof behind the serrations. The left of the frame has "crown/shield", rampant lion, and "PV" proofs. The early three-digit serial number is marked on the butt. It is fitted with blade and windage adjustable notch sights, long smooth trigger, serrated slide stop, Second Model pattern thumb safety, and hammer, First Model smooth flat back strap, a lanyard ring on the lower left, and checkered grips with the Star trademark.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine, retains 70% of the original high polish blue finish with the balance thinning to mostly a smooth grey patina, a brown patina on the grip straps and a few scattered patches of light surface pitting. The grips are good with a repaired crack in the right panel, a hairline crack at the top of the right panel, and some minor handling marks throughout, with well-defined checkering. Mechanically needs work. Writer cannot recall another example at our auction!

Presentation Cased Model 1902 DWM Luger Carbine with Stock

Lot # 1438 (Sale Order: 439 of 674)

Exceptional Presentation Cased DWM Model 1902 Luger Semi-Automatic Carbine with Matching Shoulder Stock

This is a very fine example of a DWM Model 1902 Luger carbine. This example is complete with an original, matching numbered, DWM factory checkered, walnut shoulder stock. These carbines were an early attempt by DWM to a produce a lightweight rifle substitute to compete specifically with the various stocked pistols being produced throughout Europe at this time. They have an 11 3/4 inch barrel and factory hanger on the front end of the frame that attaches to a small walnut forend which houses a small spring accelerator inside. This accelerator helps cycle the barrel by helping to return the barrel/upper receiver into battery due to the additional weight of the longer barrel. These 1902 carbines have the rare/desirable early features such as the long old style frame, flat mainspring, grip safety, dished toggles with toggle lock on the right side, and the recessed/flat breech bolt with the small spring extractor. The top of the chamber is blank and the front toggle has the DWM logo for "Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken". The full serial number is correctly marked on the underside of the frame extension and the underside of the barrel. The last two digits of the serial number (98) are marked on the various small parts. The forend is also correctly numbered (598) inside the cutout for the frame extension and also matches the pistol. The grips are numbered (47) on the back side of each panel. The stock is completely original and unaltered and has the hard-plastic/horn type buttplate and an original lower sling swivel. The original attaching iron on the stock is numbered (598) on top. The magazine has a nickel plated body with the correct wood base. Comes in a highly desirable bound takedown case containing a pin punch, dismantling tool, two extra nickel plated magazines with the correct wood base, cleaning rod with oil container, and period box of 7.65mm cartridges.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very fine with 85% plus of the original blued finish remaining with minor edge and high spot wear overall, some minor spotting/speckling on top of the barrel, the side plate, and left side of the frame area, and minor thinning/scratches on the front grip strap. The various small parts retain 90% of the refurbished straw colors with slightly more wear on the face of the trigger. The replaced grips are fine as well as the other wood with some very minor nicks and dings on the forend and buttstock. The presentation case is also very fine showing some discoloration and minor wear to the exterior and limited high spot wear on the otherwise very fine original lining. A very fine example of a scarce presentation cased 1902 DWM Luger carbine with stock.

Very Fine World War I Imperial German Mauser "Red 9" C96 Broomhandle Semi-Automatic Pistol with Matching Numbered Shoulder Stock and Leather Harness

In military use concurrently with the 7.63mm Broomhandle, the "Red 9" name comes from the deeply branded "9" in the grips; even in low-visibility situations, a soldier could know what ammunition to load just by taking hold of the pistol. Blade front and 500-meter tangent rear sights, with the three-line Mauser Oberndorf address on the top chamber flat, "crown/gothic letter" military proof on the right chamber flat, "crown/crown/U" on the chamber and bolt, Prussian eagle on the front of the magazine well on the frame, and the two-line address on the right side of the frame. Included with the pistol is a shoulder stock with matching number "911" stamped on the iron, a "1916" dated leather harness with faint carving on the back that appears to read "PRIVATE ERNEST WETTERER/IN/VERDUM", a wood handled cleaning rod, and a copy of the book "The 'Broomhandle' Mauser" by Jonathan Ferguson.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very fine, retains 80% original blue finish, showing some bright areas from stock contact on the underside of the barrel and around the backstrap slot, bright edge wear, minor patches of surface oxidation and light handling marks. Mauser "Flatside" Broomhandle Semi-Automatic Pistol with Shoulder Stock

This is an exceptional representative example of a Mauser Flatside Broomhandle pistol rig. The most unique feature of this pistol is the all smooth slab side flat frame with no milling marks. This pistol is marked "WAFFENFABRIK, MAUSER, OBERNDORK A/N" on top of the chamber and it has the early style rear sight graduated form 100-1000 meters with the large ring hammer and long extractor. The underside of the barrel has three "gothic" unidentifiable script letters and the right side of the barrel extension has the early Mauser antlered firing proof. It is complete with the original combination wooden holster/shoulder stock that has been renumbered to match to the pistol, with the serial number running across the width of the attaching iron. The pistol has all matching numbers. It has the original leather carrying harness.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very fine overall, with 85% plus of the original blued finish overall with minor edge and high spot wear with a little more wear on the back strap from the stock iron. World War II Gustloff-Werke Pistol with Matching Magazine

Lot # 1443 (Sale Order: 444 of 674)

Rare World War II Gustloff-Werke Semi-Automatic Pistol with Matching Magazine

This is a rare example of a Gustloff-Werke semi-automatic pistol. Although unverified, it is estimated that only approximately 240 "production" pistols were manufactured before the factory was bombed in 1944. Only about half of the total production were manufactured with zinc frames like this example, while the other half featured frames made of steel. The development of this pistol design started circa 1938/39 under the direction of Fritz Sauckel, Gauleiter of Thuringia and was manufactured by the Gustloff-Werke. Mechanically the pistol bears a resemblance to the Walther Model PP pistol, though with a simplified single action trigger mechanism and a takedown block independent of the trigger guard. Reportedly submitted to Hitler in early 1940, the Gustloff was proposed as a possible replacement police weapon, to be manufactured in Weimar using concentration camp labor to free up other manufacturers for military production, though the scheme never took off. Exact production numbers are unverified. This example is numbered "1285" on the left of the frame, which is constructed from cast zinc, with the cast steel slide bearing crude markings consisting of a "G" over the two-line address "GUSTLOFF-WERKE/WAFFENWERK SUHL" on the left side and a Gustloff "G" logo on the right, and an alloy trigger guard. It has a raised sighting rib with a fixed blade front sight and notch rear sight. "Eagle/N" proofs marked on the right rear edge of the slide and frame. Matching number "258" is marked on various components including the rear of the magazine, with unnumbered grip panels that appear to likely be the originals. Operation is straight blowback, with a heavy spring loaded safety lever on the left side of the frame, and a pair of checkered plastic grips with the "G" Gustloff logo molded on the left panel. The 7-round magazine is properly curved at the base to match the contour of the pistol.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent, retains 95% plus original blue finish on the slide with some light finish wear at the leading edges, with the original unfinished zinc frame retaining its gray appearance. The grips are also excellent with a few light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.

"Eagle/ZZA2" Waffen SS proof double stamped on the left of the receiver ring. Fitted with an Opticotechnica 4x scope marked "dow+" and serial numbered "4281" on the tube with three-post reticle and a period rubber eye protector, with its authentic double claw mount serial numbered "5148", and a correct leather sling with L&F maker marked buckle. Import marked on left side of receiver. The rear iron sight base is numbered "9213", a factory error as it is one number off the otherwise remaining matching numbered components with "9212". The stock only has one small "eagle/623" proof stamp visible behind the trigger guard with no other external markings, with "eagle/WaA77" proof stamp on the floorplate, and "eagle/77" proofs stamped on the bottom of the trigger housing. This exact gun is pictured on page 127 of the book "Backbone of the Wehrmacht Volume II: Sniper Variations of the German K98k Rifle" by Richard D. Law, in which the caption mentions it by serial number along with its scope as part of the well known Dr. Geoffrey L. Sturgess collection.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine, retains 75% professionally restored blue finish on the barreled action with 40% original blue finish on the trigger guard assembly, scattered light handling marks, edge wear, and light spotting. Stock is also very fine with some light handling marks and scratches. Scope is fine with hazy optics. Mechanically excellent. This extremely rare documented SS proofed Steyr K98k double claw sniper rifle is the missing piece to nearly every World War II sniper rifle collection. Do not miss this opportunity to acquire a real one!
