Relief Chiseled German Swept Hilt Broadsword/Sword

Lot # 1325 (Sale Order: 326 of 674)

Extraordinary Relief Chiseled German Swept Hilt Broadsword/Sword of War by Anton Konrad with Late 16th/Early 17th Century Blade by Peter Munsten the Elder of Solingen

The blade features the markings of Peter Munsten the Elder (1552-1628) of Solingen, Germany, which was arguably the blade manufacturing capital of the world, producing many of the most talented blade smiths as well as some of the most sought after blades. Munsten was an active sword smith in Solingen from at least 1591 until his death in 1628. Some sources indicate that Munsten emigrated to London in the early 17th century to work at the Hounslow manufactory, possibly only working there for a brief period due to the upheaval of the 30 Years' War before returning to Solingen, accounting for a small number of Munsten blades marked London. His son, Peter Munsten the Younger (1580-1629), also became a respected swordsmith, being noted as using the "Moor's head" mark on his blades as well as spelling his name as "PETHER". Examples of blades by Peter Munsten the Elder can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago (Reference Number 1982.3354), the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Accession Number 1977-167-576), and the Swedish Statens Historiska Museer (Item Number 5073_LRK). This example is an incredibly crafted and ornately embellished representative example of a late 16th/early 17th century "sword of war", having a detailed, deeply relief chiseled swept hilt along with a broad, sturdy blade. Swords such as this example remained popular through the 30 Years' War due to their durability, and an ornate example such as this in easy to imagine belonging to a wealthy military man of some standing. It measures approximately 42 1/8 inches overall with a 34 1/2 inch blade that measures approximately 2 inches wide at the forte. There are two deep fullers on each side starting at the quillion block and extending 10 1/2 inches. Within the fullers on each side is marked "PETER [Passau/Solingen wolf] MVNSTEN" and "MEFECIT [Passau/Solingen wolf] SOLINGEN". The Passau/Solingen wolf markings are of the style attributed to the late 16th century. At the termination of the fullers on both sides are three deeply stamp "wildmen", a mark strongly associated with the elder Munsten. The hilt itself is masterfully relief chiseled showing floral motifs as well as various scenes of knights/men-at-arms on the guard, quillion block, and pommel, a reichsadler and classical bust on the pommel, and lion's busts on the knuckle guard. The guard itself is in the iconic "swept hilt" style with large side ring and loop-guard, large dual finger rings, treble counterguard, swept rear quillion flowing into the knuckle guard, and an egg-shaped pommel. The grip is wrapped with iron wire with nicely executed Turk's head knots at the top and bottom. The hilt was built from multiple pieces that are pinned together and was crafted in the workshop of Anton Konrad (1880-1938) of Dresden in the early 1900s as a copy of an original. Konrad is known to have built exceptional copies based on examples from the Dresden Armory, often using original antique blades, and many of his swords now reside in major institutional and private collections

Class: Other

Fine overall, the blade showing primarily a bright grey patina with some scattered patches of mild pitting, concentrated towards the point, and almost all of the markings remaining crisp. The guard shows an attractive grey patina, with one arm of the counterguard absent, and the chisel work remaining incredibly crisp. The grip is fine retaining almost all of the wire wrap which is slightly loose. This is a beautiful example of an ornate sword of war!BR>

Lot # 1326 (Sale Order: 327 of 674)

Attractive Engraved 1662 Dated and Johann Zeller Signed Wheellock Target Rifle

The Zeller/Zellner family of Austria are known makers of wheel locks in the 17th and 18th centuries and are represented in royal and museum collections. All wheel locks are comparably rare firearms. The wheel lock mechanism was too complex for widespread use and was mainly used on firearms owned by the elite. The barrel has fixed sights and is marked "*JOHANN*ZELLER*16*62*" on the top flat and a band of engraving at the breech. The lock features broad scroll engraving inhabited by a lion and fish heads and is tripped by double set triggers enclosed by an iron finger groove trigger guard with some scroll engraving. The right side of the buttstock has a compartment for the included spanner. The lid of this compartment is a combination of wood and horn. The full length stock has horn and pearl inlays, horn fittings, and scroll carving on the front of the cheek piece. The rifle has a wooden ramrod.

Class: Antique

Very good. The rifle has a bright metal with the balance mottled gray patina with some fine pin point pitting. The stock is very good and has several repairs and general minor marks and scratches. The ramrod pipes are missing some material. Most of the inlays remain. The engraving is crisp. Mechanically untested.

Presentation Cased Early Production Colt Government Model Pistol

Lot # 1333 (Sale Order: 334 of 674)

Extremely Rare Documented Presentation Cased Early Production Colt Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol with Historical Inscription and Gold Inlay

This is a spectacular example of a highly factory optioned Colt Government Model semi-automatic pistol that was manufactured in 1913. The pistol has the Colt high polish commercial blue finish on the slide and frame with fiery niter blue trigger, slide lock, safety lock hammer, rear sight and stock screws. The oil finished walnut stocks are checkered. The right side of the slide is engraved with the three line presentation: "First Prize Revolver Competition Defenses of the Delaware/1913/Won by First Serge. Geo. Neville. 112th. Co. C.A.C." The inscription has a gold inlaid rectangular border with pointed ends. The Colt shipping records listed in William Goddard's THE GOVERNMENT MODEL (page 255) lists this pistol, with the specific note "Gold band, Eng. On side of slide," as being shipped on December 24, 1913 to a Captain L.S. Ryan. Note that the records confirm the gold inlay as factory. A record search established Capt. Ryan as an Army training officer with the Coast Artillery Corps in the years leading up to the First World War (see, for example, Roster of Attendants at Federal Military Training Camps, 1913-1916, page 424). As of this writing, no information could be found on 1st Sergeant Neville. Responsible for coastal and harbor defense of the United States, the 112th Co. CAC was organized in August 1901 at Fort DuPont, Delaware. The usual Colt marking on the right side of the slide has been moved to the left side of the slide to provide space for the gold inlay and inscription. The left side of the slide is roll stamped with the unique marking, "COLT AUTOMATIC/CALIBRE 45," above the recoil spring housing followed by "PATENTED APR 20. 1897/SEPT.9.1902. DEC.19.1905. FEB.14.1911." in two unequal lines and "COLT'S PT.F.A. MFG.CO./HARTFORD.CT. U.S.A." The Rampant Colt is located on the left side of the slide behind the serrations. The right side of the frame is roll stamped "GOVERNMENT MODEL/C5340" behind the slide stop hole. The Colt Triangle/VP proof mark is stamped on the upper left trigger guard bow and the "R" assembler's mark is stamped on the lower left trigger guard bow. The barrel has a full blue finish and has a small "C" stamped on the chamber lip and a "5" stamped on the bottom of the barrel in front of the lug. An "R" is stamped on the top of the frame to the right of the disconnector hole. The pistol has the flat top rear sight adopted by the military in September 1913 and is fitted with a two tone lanyard loop magazine. The pistol is complete with a French fitted oak case. The case has a rectangular brass plate in the lid and is lined with blue velvet. The case has compartments for a spare lanyard loop magazine and a brass cleaning rod with button head. Colt Government Model Semi-Automatic pistols with gold factory inlays are very rare. On page 435 of THE BOOK OF COLT FIREARMS author R. L. Wilson states that of the approximately 160 pre-WWII pistols that were factory inscribed or monogrammed, only FOUR are known to have been gold inlaid.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent. The pistol retains 90% plus of the original high polish blue finish. The blue is slightly thin of the top of the slide, the underside of the recoil spring housing and on the grip strap. There is moderate thinning on the high points of the slide and frame. The grips are excellent with moderate handling wear. The inscription and gold inlay are in excellent condition. The slide and frame markings are crisp. The case exterior is in very good condition and the blue velvet lining is excellent. This is a spectacular example of an extremely rare factory engraved and gold-inlaid Colt Government Model automatic pistol.

Pre-WWII Factory Engraved Colt Woodsman Target Pistol

Lot # 1336 (Sale Order: 337 of 674)

Near New Documented Pre-World War II Retailer Display Factory Engraved Colt Woodsman Target Model Semi-Automatic Pistol with Original Box and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1936, this near mint Colt Woodsman Target Model pistol features a rare Colt Factory “B” engraving. Experts believe that only about 151 First Series Woodsman pistols were factory engraved. The factory letter confirms the 6 ½ inch barrel in .22 caliber, blue finish, and level “B” factory engraving with the type of stocks not listed. As documented by the factory letter, this Woodsman is made more remarkable by being a well-traveled factory display gun. Starting in 1936 this Woodsman traveled to several big city retailers across the United States in the years prior to World War II. The pistol originally left the factory on November 6, 1936, shipped to Loan Account, Frank J. Budge Co. of Miami, Florida. The pistol returned to the factory on January 14, 1938 and reshipped on loan account to the following locations:Lou J. EppingerDetroit, MichiganJanuary 19, 1938Anderson & Ireland Co.Baltimore, MarylandFebruary 4, 1938L.P. Wood Burlington, VermontMarch 17, 1938Murta Appleton Co.Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaMay 5, 1938Minor L. HinesEast Cleveland, OhioJanuary 30, 1940The factory records unfortunately did not include the final disposition of the pistol. 75% of the surfaces feature a fine factory floral scroll engraving on a punch dot background. This beautiful engraving appears on the frame, grip straps, all sides of the slide, and the top rear half of the barrel. The pistol has standard Colt markings with the barrel address/patent dates information inside an engraved banner. Fitted with standard sights and a set of fully checkered grips. The two-tone magazine is marked “COLT WOODSMAN/CAL. 22 L.R.” on the base. The original Colt factory box is numbered to the gun and features end labels for “ENGRAVED,” “TARGET,” “B” engraving. A “Shooting Suggestions” pamphlet and instructions are also included. Documented Colt factory display pieces are rarely encountered and this example's condition and factory engraving only add to its rarity. This Woodsman is in a category all of its own and is well deserving of the finest collection.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Colt Model 1902 Sporting Pistol with Rare Picture Box

Lot # 1339 (Sale Order: 340 of 674)

Outstanding Early Production Colt Model 1902 Sporting Semi-Automatic Pistol with Extremely Rare Picture Box and Colt Factory Letter

This is an absolutely outstanding example of an early production Colt Model 1902 Sporting pistol that was shipped in a lot of two pistols in April 1903. Of all of the Colt Model 1902 pistols we have sold over the years this is the finest example we have ever offered. It is not only a very early production example, it is in outstanding all original condition, and is fitted with the highly desirable pearl grips. It has the early Colt high polish commercial blue finish, and color casehardened finish on the hammer. The Colt factory letter shows that this example was shipped to J.B. Crook & Company, New York, New York on April 13, 1903. This company was originally established in approximately 1837 as a dry goods store. Later it became one of the early retailers/importers/manufacturers of salt water fishing and hunting equipment, as well as a variety of household goods and appliances. They were an original sporting goods store and are listed in the early periodical of "Forest and Stream" newspapers and magazines. They were eventually bought out in the early 1900s. The Colt letter verifies this configuration except the grips are "Not Listed". The right side of the slide is marked in two lines "AUTOMATIC COLT/CALIBRE 38 RIMLESS SMOKELESS", and the left is roll-stamped in a two block, two-line marking of "PATENTED/APR.20,1897.SEPT.9,1902" followed by "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO./HARTFORD, CT.U.S.A." The Rampant Colt is stamped on the left side towards the rear of the slide. Since it’s a very early example it is not stamped with any Colt assembler/acceptance proofs which is very scarce. It is fitted with the original all blued Colt magazine that is marked on the floor plate: "PAT'D SEPT.9.1884". As noted it comes with its original early Colt maroon cardboard shipping box. The underside of the box shows a very faint matching serial number of "5631". It also includes an original Colt instruction manual, an instruction sheet and a small original glass bottle of "3 in One" lubricating oil with its cork stopper. The oil also comes with two paper sheets showing what the oil can be used for. The lid of the Colt shipping box has the early "Red and White" label, with the Rampant Colt logo to the left and with the right side depicting this model of pistol and reads "AUTOMATIC COLT PISTOL" across the top. It has the two-piece white/blue end label with the top portion reading: "SPORTING MODEL" and the bottom section reading "AUTOMATIC COLT PISTOL./RIMLESS SMOKELESS/.38".

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent plus with 98% of the bright original factory high polish blue finish overall with just a hint of very minor front edge wear and some very minor browning on the rear grip strap. The hammer retains 98% plus of its original case colors, and 98% of the Colt niter blue finish remains on the trigger. The grips are also excellent with only a couple of very minor age lines visible on the lower left panel. Mechanically excellent. The Colt picture box is very fine with nice original color overall and 95% of the labels remaining. The corners are all solid, and the box just shows minor wear and scuffing on the edges and corners with the rear paper hinge just starting to pull away from the bottom section. A truly outstanding high condition, early production Colt Model 1902 Sporting semi-automatic pistol.

Factory Engraved Colt New Pocket .32 Double Action Revolver

Lot # 1342 (Sale Order: 343 of 674)

Very Scarce Factory Engraved Colt New Pocket .32 Double Action Revolver with Pearl Grips

This attractive factory engraved revolver was manufactured in 1905. On p. 370 of "The Book of Colt Firearms", Sutherland and Wilson note that only 15 New Pocket model revolvers are listed in the factory ledgers as being factory engraved. They go on to note that these revolvers displayed the typical contemporary engraving designs seen on other Colt revolvers at the time. Cuno A. Helfricht was the main master engraver at the time this revolver was made. The engraving covers more than 75% of the surfaces including the sides of the frame, cylinder, and barrel, and it features mostly floral scroll on a punchdot background. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and patent dates, and the left side of the barrel is marked "FOR 32 S&W CTG." in a banner. The left side of the frame is marked with the Rampant Colt with "COLT'S" and "NEW POCKET" above and below it. The right rear of the trigger guard is marked with a factory rework stamp. It is fitted with a blade front sight, groove rear sight, and a pair of smooth pearl grips. This revolver is accompanied by a factory letter that indicates no information was available.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very fine with 70% plus original blue finish, some fading to smooth gray and brown patina, minor cylinder drag lines, and generally minor handling and storage related wear. The grips are also very fine and have attractive natural colors and mild handling wear. Mechanically excellent.

It is fitted with pearl grips.

Russian Contract Colt Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol

Lot # 1344 (Sale Order: 345 of 674)

Rare Documented Russian Contract Colt Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol with Factory Letter

Originally ordered in 1916 and 1917, the Russian Contract Colt Government Model pistols were ordered by the Imperial Russian government from Colt. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration (grips not listed) as well as shipment to the government of Russia on 29 November 1916 in a shipment of 4,000 guns. When placing the order, the government of Great Britain acted as an intermediary, using a line of credit established by the Russians and backed by hard gold reserves held in Britain to cover the bill. Britain's role as go-between is the source of the signature marking on the left side of the frame, "ANGL. ZAKAZIE"(transliterated) for "English Order". The Russian Contract pistols as-issued otherwise bore only standard Colt markings like this example. By 1916, the situation on the Eastern Front was already getting well out of hand for Russia, and in 1917 they went through the February and October Revolutions, which brought about both the fall of the Imperial government and the successor Provisional Government, which led to the rise of the Soviet Union. Additionally, some reports of the final assassination of Tsar Nicholas II and his family put a pair of Colt .45 ACP pistols among the weapons used by the Bolshevik party, in particular one used by Yakov Yurovsky, leader of the squad who is noted as having fired the opening shot directly into the Tsar's chest. Russian Contract Government Model Colts are scarce on the American market in any condition, as they saw hard use through multiple conflicts and virtually none were ever exported by the Soviet Union, making a fine example like this one a true rarity. The left side of the slide has the two-line, two-block address and patent dates with the Rampant Colt behind the serrations, these markings have some flaws and breaks due to a worn roll stamp. The right of the slide is marked with the caliber marking. The barrel is unmarked and has a polished chamber hood. The left side of the frame is marked with the aforementioned contract marking and "VP" and "P" on the trigger guard, with the model marking and serial number on the right. It is fitted with the standard blade and notch sights, long smooth trigger, wide checkered hammer, short grip safety, smooth mainspring housing, diamond pattern checkered grips, lanyard loop, and an unmarked two-tone magazine with lanyard loop base.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine, retains 60% plus of the original blue finish with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina and some scattered light pitting. The grips are very fine with a few scattered light blemishes in the otherwise crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Early Production Colt Government Model Pistol

Lot # 1345 (Sale Order: 346 of 674)

Outstanding Early Production Colt Government Model Semi-Automatic Pistol with Factory Letter

According to the included factory letter this highly attractive Colt Government model was manufactured in May of 1914, early in production of the commercial Government Model. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration, grips not listed, as well as shipment on 24 July 1914 to Schoverling, Daly and Gales in New York in a six gun shipment, just four days prior to the outbreak of World War I. This pistol represented the cutting edge of firearm technology and was highly sought after by military personnel and civilians alike. This particular example exhibits the early production lustrous high polish blue finish. The slide on this pistol bears the two-line, two-block address and patent markings on the left side of the slide with the Rampant Colt behind the serrations. The right of the slide has the caliber markings. "VP" and "R" are on the trigger guard, and "GOVERNMENT MODEL" is on the right side of the frame with the early four-digit serial number below it. The barrel is blued with a polished chamber and is marked "J" on the side of the lug. The slide release, thumb safety, and wide hammer are checkered and the smooth, flat mainspring housing has a lanyard loop at the bottom. It is fitted with a blade front and early production, rounded top notch rear sight, as well as a pair of diamond pattern checkered walnut grips. The two-toned magazine has a pinned base with a lanyard loop.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent, retains 98% of the original, bright, high polish blue finish with some very light edge wear, a few scattered light handling marks, and the Rampant Colt stamped somewhat lightly (which we believe to be a factory error). The grips are also excellent with only the slightest handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. If you are searching for a benchmark, early production Colt Government Model pistol for your collection, search no further!

WWII Singer Mfg. Co. Presentation Model 1911A1 Pistol

Lot # 1346 (Sale Order: 347 of 674)

Outstanding, Rare and Highly Desirable, Unserialized World War II Singer Manufacturing Co. Prototype/Presentation Model 1911A1 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Unique Factory Polished, In-The-White Finish

This is an outstanding and extremely rare variation of a World War II production U.S. Model 1911A1 pistol that was manufactured by the Singer Manufacturing Company. Singer Model 1911A1 pistols certainly need very little introduction, and their desirability in the 1911 and 1911A1 collectors market is unmatched. There were 500 of these extremely rare pistols produced for the U.S. as part of Educational Order No. W-ORD-396 awarded April 17, 1940. It is reported that almost all of the 500 that were produced were issued to the Army Air Corps early in World War II. Standard production Singer 1911A1 pistols are incredibly rare in their own right, but this pistol is a true rarity, as it bears no serial number or inspector markings, meaning it was likely intended for presentation to a high ranking official or important member of the Singer company. These guns are often referred to as presentations or prototypes, examples of which can be seen from all of the manufacturers of 1911A1 pistols and were often produced at the beginning or during production runs, or alternatively pulled off the production line by employees with "sticky fingers". This example appears to have been pulled off the standard assembly line early in the process. It displays the same high quality fitting that makes the standard production Singer 1911A1 pistols so desirable to collectors, along with a nearly mirror polished "in the white" finish that was likely left as is by the factory until allocation for presentation and finishing. It is very likely that, after assembly, this specific pistol sat at the Singer factory in its present state awaiting a presentation that never came, before eventually ending up in private hands decades later. A similar presentation example bearing serial number "X00" is known which was presented to Wilbur S. Peets, Singer's Vice President of Manufacturing, upon his retirement in 1968. That example is noted as having been left in the white and stored in the Singer vault until it was removed and blued by in the Singer tool room just before being presented to Peets. The description of the journey of serial number X00 may be an indication that this unserialized example was another pistol that laid in wait in the Singer vault and was ultimately never finished for presentation. Some of the sheltered areas on this specific pistol show some light tool/manufacturing marks, as if awaiting a final polish and application of finish. The left side of the slide bears the standard two-line Singer address, while the right of the frame has the standard U.S. property, model, and U.S. army markings. The only other markings on the pistol are on the blued barrel, which is marked with a small "G" (1938-1941 production) on the bottom in front of the lug, "P" on the left of the lug, and "COLT 45 AUTO" on the lower left. (It is noted that this is concurrent with Singer production date. Being that this gun is a prototype, it is very likely that Singer could have acquired the barrel from Colt). It is fitted with a half-moon blade front sight, dovetailed flat top notch rear sight, checkered slide stop and thumb safety, short milled trigger, long grip safety, wide checkered hammer, checkered arched mainspring housing with lanyard loop, the correct non-reinforced hollow back grips, and an unmarked two-tone magazine.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent as factory finished in the white, likely for awaiting application of a presentation finish, and without serial number. There are some scattered light manufacturing marks that likely would have been polished away before finish application and presentation. There are some scattered light handling/takedown marks. The grips are also excellent with a few scattered light handling marks and a molding abnormality near the top of the left panel. Mechanically excellent. This is an extremely rare opportunity to acquire a prototype/presentation model Singer Model 1911A1 pistol, one that will enhance your collection greatly!

Desirable Early World War II 1941 Production U.S. Colt Model 1911A1 Semi-Automatic Pistol

Manufactured in 1941, the Robert Sears inspected Colts marked the transition point from Colt's high polish blue to the parkerization treatment that would become the standard for the rest of the war, with this example having received the blue finish before the transition. Clawson's "Colt .45 Service Pistols: Models of 1911 and 1911A1" lists this pistol in a shipment of 2,500 pistols on 30 April 1941, on p. 396. The left side of the matching numbered slide has the two-line, two-block, patent dates and address with the Rampant Colt between, and the right side of the slide is correctly devoid of markings. The right side of the frame has the U.S. property marking, serial number, and model designation, with "60" on the trigger guard. The left side of the frame has the boxed "R.S." Robert Sears inspection mark, "P" proof, and "T" over "VP" proof on the trigger guard. The top of the slide also has a "P" proof. The blued barrel is marked "COLT 45 AUTO" on the lower left, "P" on the left of the lug, and "G" on the bottom in front of the lug. Fitted with blade and notch sights, wide checkered hammer, short checkered trigger, long grip safety, arched checkered mainspring housing with a lanyard loop, two full blue magazines with "COLT/.45 AUTO" on the bases, and a correct pair of "hollow-back" non-reinforced checkered plastic grips.
