Antique Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1050 (Sale Order: 51 of 674)

Excellent Antique Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle in Highly Desirable .38-55 W.C.F.

Manufactured in 1896, this is an outstanding example of an early production Winchester Model 1894 rifle in standard configuration, as well as chambered in the desirable .38-55 W.C.F. These standard configuration rifles were often viewed as utilitarian tools during their working lives, and thus, few examples in high condition like this one remain. The standard two-line address is marked on the top flat of the barrel along with the caliber marking at the breech. The three-line model, trademark, and patent date is on the upper tang, and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable buckhorn/sporting rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock, showing some attractive contrasting straight grain, and is fitted with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Excellent, retains 90% plus of the original blue finish, 80% of the vibrant case colors on the hammer and lever, and 80% of the bright original nitre blue remaining on the loading gate with some thinning to brown on the left side of the magazine tube and scattered light handling marks. The wood is very fine with some scattered light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.

Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1051 (Sale Order: 52 of 674)

Documented Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1897 according to Madis. This is a desirable, documented example of a special order Winchester deluxe Model 1892 rifle. The Winchester Model 1892 was often viewed as a working gun, meaning that relatively few were ordered with extra bells and whistles, let alone the plethora of special order features seen on this example. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .25-20 W.C.F., half octagon barrel, half magazine, plain trigger, takedown, Lyman front, leaf, and rear tang sights, and a checkered pistol grip stock with a rubber shotgun buttplate when received at the warehouse on 3 September 1903 and shipped the same day in order number 198078. The top barrel flat is marked with the standard two-line address and caliber marking at the breech. The three line model, trademark, and patents date information is marked on the upper tang, and the serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. It is import marked on the inside edge of the ejection port. The left side of the lower tang has a peened out assembly number followed by "XXX S", which is indicative of a factory order being changed before the rifle shipped and may explain the extended time between the application of the serial number on 5 February 1901 and arriving at the warehouse on 3 September 1903. The left side of the upper tang is marked "c 14537 XX R", with "14537 92" marked in the stock inlet. "KY 402/22-6752" is lightly hand-scribed on the lower tang. It is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight, Lyman two-leaf rear sight, and a Lyman peep sight on the upper tang, all special order. It is mounted with a very finely figured, H-pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber grip cap and checkered, hard rubber buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 60% plus of the original blue finish and strong traces of the original case colors on the sides of the lever and hammer with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth brown patina. The wood is also fine with some scattered minor handling marks and mostly crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Do not miss your opportunity at this special feature loaded, deluxe Model 1892 rifle!

Factory Engraved Marlin Deluxe Model 1897 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1052 (Sale Order: 53 of 674)

Exceptional Factory Engraved Antique Marlin Deluxe Model 1897 Lever Action .22 Rifle with Factory Letter

Offered here is a stellar example of a seldom found factory engraved Marlin Model 1897 rifle. The accompanying factory letter states the early production rifle was shipped on November 1, 1898 and confirms the 24 inch half octagon barrel in .22 caliber and pistol grip stock. Marlin records are notoriously incomplete, as noted Marlin expert William Brophy explained, "Unfortunately, the few remaining factory records do not, with any regularity, indicate if the gun was factory engraved or not." The engraving is certainly factory. The Marlin patterns, including the engraving on this rifle, were designed by Conrad Ulrich who was influenced by the 19th century masters L.D. Nimschke and Gustave Young. Ulrich spent a lifetime embellishing some of the finest high art firearms of the late 19th century to early 20th century. The richly engraved casehardened receiver features scroll, border, and game panel scene. A circular game panel depicting a whitetail buck in woodland scene decorates the left side of the receiver. The top and bottom of the receiver are engraved to match with scroll and border patterns. The rifle is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The top barrel flat carries the two-line Marlin legend ahead of the rear sight. The top of the receiver is marked "MARLIN SAFETY." The upper tang is marked "MODEL/1897." The nicely figured deluxe forearm and pistol grip stock are checkering. The buttstock is fitted with a hard rubber factory buttplate.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The barrel, magazine tube, and forend cap retain 95% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance . The receiver retains 85% plus vivid original case colors. 30% original case colors remain on the lever, and 90% original case colors remain on the hammer. The wood is also excellent with minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A high condition example of a rarely seen factory engraved Marlin Deluxe Model 1897 rifle that will be a welcomed addition to any lever action collection.

Factory Engraved Marlin Deluxe Model 1894 Takedown Rifle

Lot # 1053 (Sale Order: 54 of 674)

Historic Inscribed and Factory Engraved Marlin Deluxe Model 1894 Takedown Lever Action Rifle Presented by Marlin Rockwell Corp. to Carl G. Winter, President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles

This historic and factory engraved Marlin is inscribed on the upper left barrel flat: "PRESENTED TO THE Grand Worthy President F.O.E. Carl G. Winter ON HIS VISIT TO THE Marlin Rockwell Corp. New Haven, C.T. By Its Members Nov.26.1917." Carl G. Winter was an insurance executive in the early 20th century and Grand Worthy President of The Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.) in 1917. The Order was founded in 1898 in Seattle, Washington. The organization's mission is: "The Fraternal Order of Eagles, an international non-profit organization, unites fraternally in the spirit of liberty, truth, justice, and equality, to make human life more desirable by lessening its ills, and by promoting peace, prosperity, gladness and hope." Among the notable past members are seven U.S. presidents including Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan. Other notable members include Eleanor Roosevelt, Joe Foss, Billy Ray Cyrus, Gordie Howe, and many more. The rifle has border designs and scroll and punch dot engraving patterns on most of the components along with a game scene on the left side of the action. The game scene and other engraving patterns match other known Ulrich engraved rifles. Conrad Ulrich is estimated by R. L. Wilson on page 83 to have worked at Marlin from 1895 to 1907 and is known to have not fully retired until around the WWI era. According to Brophy in "Marlin Firearms: A History of the Guns and the Company that Made Them", Conrad Ulrich engraved Marlin firearms from approximately 1881 to 1910 and his son George engraved them from approximately 1907 to 1917. Note the similarities to the deer on the Conrad Ulrich engraved Winchester Model 1866 rifle shown on the dust jacket and front piece of "The Book of Winchester Engraving" by Wilson and other Ulrich family engraved rifles. It is equipped with a beaded blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, and a deluxe checkered forearm and semi-pistol grip buttstock made from attractive burl walnut and fitted with a nickel forend cap and a hard rubber "Marlin Safety" buttplate.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Extremely fine. The rifle retains 85% plus of the original blue finish and 50% nickel plating with some minor handling and storage marks, handling wear on the takedown collar, and some minor oxidation primarily confined near the muzzle. The wood is very fine with sharp checkering, minor dings and marks, and minor wear in the varnish on the butt. Mechanically excellent, and the markings and details are crisp. An exceptional Factory Engraved Marlin Deluxe Model 1894 Rifle with interesting history.

Winchester Model 1886 .50 Express Takedown Rifle

Lot # 1054 (Sale Order: 55 of 674)

Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Takedown Rifle in Rare .50-100-450 Express

Released in 1893-1894, the .50-100-450 Express cartridge was one of the most powerful commercial cartridges available at the time, and it quickly proved popular with big and dangerous game hunters. Many Winchester rifles chambered for this powerful cartridge were shipped to England and then found their way to Africa and India where they were often employed against big cats. Demand for the cartridge in the United States was low however, and relatively few of these rifles were manufactured. The Model 1886 in .50 Express was only produced in limited numbers, especially when compared to the smaller calibers. Today Winchesters in .50 Express are a highly sought after collectible. Examples in any condition are proving difficult to find. This example was manufactured in 1910. It is fitted with a beaded blade front sight and three leaf rear sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking ahead of the rear sight and "50-100-450" at the breech. Winchester factory oval proofs are stamped on the receiver and barrel at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line model designation/trade mark information, and the lower tang has the two-line patent dates and serial number. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. Unfortunately, no factory record on this serial range available in the Cody records.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 90% plus original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The takedown collar retains 40% original blue finish. The forend cap retains 95% original blue finish. The receiver retains 30% plus original blue finish with smooth brown patina on the balance. The bolt retains 97% original blue finish. Buttplate is a mix of brown and gray patinas. 30% faded original case colors remain on the lever and hammer. The wood is excellent with some scattered minor handling marks and light texturing to the stock finish. Mechanically excellent.

Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Lever Action Takedown Rifle

Lot # 1055 (Sale Order: 56 of 674)

Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Lever Action Takedown Rifle in .35 W.C.F.

Manufactured in 1915. The barrel is equipped with a W.F. Sheard blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. Standard Winchester markings including the factory oval proof on the barrel and receiver at the breech are present. The top of the receiver ring is matted. The select grade walnut forearm and straight grip stock are checkered and feature an ebony forend insert and solid recoil pad. According to noted Winchester expert and author George Madis, only one in each 1,000 Model 1895s had checkering or carving. The .35 Winchester Centerfire cartridge was rather scarce compared to the more popular .30-40 Krag and of course the 7.62x54 mm rimmed cartridge that was used for the Russian contract that accounts for over half of the Model 1895 production run.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent, retaining 90% plus original blue finish showing some brown patina on the takedown collar and some scattered light pitting visible on the barrel towards the muzzle. The wood is also excellent showing minimal minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. The recoil pad has hardened. Mechanically excellent.

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 1062 (Sale Order: 63 of 674)

Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter

Many legendary firearms are often cited as the "Guns that Won the West", however, there are perhaps no long guns more iconic than the Winchester Model 1866 carbine. These carbines simply have "the look" of having been there when the West was being tamed and were carried for decades on the frontier by lawmen, cowboys, outlaws, Native Americans, gold prospectors, and settlers. This example was manufactured in 1876, when the American West was still very much wild. It is a Third Model, with the serial number marked in block digits behind the trigger on the lower tang. The standard two-line address and King's patent marking is on top of the barrel. It is fitted with a blade front sight, integral to the barrel band, and a folding two-leaf rear sight, as well as a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor crescent buttplate containing an included three-piece cleaning rod. The included factory letter lists the carbine as received at the warehouse on 12 July 1876 and shipped on 27 October 1876 in order number 7507.

Class: Antique

Very good, retaining traces of original blue finish mixed with an artificially applied dark grey patina, a few scattered patches of light pitting, and attractively aged brass. The refinished wood is very good with some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.

Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1063 (Sale Order: 64 of 674)

Very Fine Documented Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The Model 1873 became one of a handful of firearms that became synonymous with the American west due to their widespread use on the frontier and their ruggedness. These "working guns" saw hard use and are generally encountered in rough shape. Offered here is a well cared for, above average condition example that will make for a very attractive addition to any lever action collection. The accompanying factory letter confirms the round barrel in .32 caliber and plain trigger as well as being received in the warehouse on May 21, 1886 and shipped on June 24. The rifle is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight on a barrel marked with the two-line Winchester address/King's patent legend ahead of the rear sight and "32 CAL." at the breech. The cartridge elevator also is marked with the caliber designation. The upper tang has the model designation, and the lower tang has the serial number. It is mounted with a plain walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Very fine, retaining 70% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance and some light spotting mostly on the barrel. 25% of original nitre blue remain on the loading lever. 50% original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. Faded patterns of original case colors remain on the buttplate. The wood is also very fine with minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.

Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle in .40-60 W.C.F.

Lot # 1064 (Sale Order: 65 of 674)

Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle in .40-60 W.C.F.

The Model 1876 was the first Winchester chambered for cartridges powerful enough to reliably take down big game and became a popular early repeating rifle in the West where it could be counted on to dispatch both foes and game, including buffalo, and was specifically advertised by Winchester as designed for use by those in the West where a .44-40 Model 1873 might not be enough when faced with a grizzly. Production of this model was comparably limited thanks in part to the introduction of the Model 1886, adding to the desirability of the '76 among collectors today. This example was manufactured in 1888. The top barrel flat is marked with the standard two-line address and King's patent marking, with the caliber marking at the breech and repeated on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The model marking is on the upper tang and the serial number is on the lower tang. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included). An included Cody Firearms Museum research request confirms the current configuration as well as receipt at the warehouse 12 January 1891 and shipment on 1 October 1891 in order number 11724.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 40% plus of the original blue finish, traces of the original case colors on the hammer and lever, and traces of the original nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina and some scattered small patches of light pitting. The wood is very good with some scattered light handling marks throughout. Mechanically excellent.

Engraved & Gold Inlaid Remington Rolling Block Shotgun

Lot # 1066 (Sale Order: 67 of 674)

Very Rare and Highly Attractive Factory Game Panel Scene Exhibition Engraved and Gold Inlaid Remington Rolling Block Shotgun with Elaborately Relief Carved Stock

This early production Remington No. 1 Rolling Block sporting shotgun, bearing serial number 15, was factory made and embellished around 1875-1880. We have previously cataloged number 11 which featured very similar engraving but had a much plainer stock. During the post-Civil War era, E. Remington & Sons had outside salesmen in Europe, including in person appearances by Samuel Remington himself, to perform demonstrations to officials of all different countries, pushing for sales of Remington Rolling Block Rifles during a time of unrest between the European powers and a period of innovation in firearms designs as countries increasingly shifted towards breech loading rifles. Very few of these high end Remington Rolling Block Shotguns are known today. R.L. Wilson described one of them as manufactured in Liege for Samuel Remington (1819-1882) as a showpiece and for his personal use while in Europe. He became president of E. Remington & Sons in 1866 and was in Paris for the World's Fair in 1867 (Exposition Universelle d'Art et d'Industrie de 1867) where the company received a silver medal for firearms and lived mainly in Paris in 1866-1877 while successfully promoting the sales of Remington products abroad. Remington's promotional efforts paid off, and Remington Rolling Block Rifles in various configurations were used in large quantities across the globe. This attractive embellished Rolling Block shotgun features a bead front sight and "E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION NEW-YORK. U.S.A." gold-inlaid on top of the raised rib of the Damascus barrel. A "C" in a circle is marked on top at the junction of the barrel rib and frame (also noted on number 11). The barrel also has a variety of Liege proofs including a "17.0" marking (17 mm = 16 gauge) and "15" on the underside, and "15" is also marked on the left side of the lower tang. The action is casehardened and is engraved with scrollwork along with scenes with a pair of dogs on each side with the right depicting them pursuing a rabbit and the left pursuing a pheasant, a motif based on the Great Seal of the U.S. is featured on top of the frame, and a scene with a buck is featured on the trigger guard. "REMINGTON'S ILION. N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY 3D. NOV. 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866" is marked on the upper tang. The buttplate tang, forend cap, and the screw heads are also engraved. The buttplate includes a door for the double compartment in the buttstock which holds the included bore brush and slotted jag. The forearm and buttstock feature extensive relief carving. The forend has scroll and floral designs and a textured background. The buttstock has the same texturing on the wrist which has "Mohawk" in script on the right and floral patterns on the left. The right side of the butt has "SR" in script, and the left side has a cheekpiece, scroll engraving, and a Mohawk hunter kneeling taking a shot at a running buck. Two mother of pearl inlays are at the heel. There is a sling swivel on the underside of the buttstock, and there is a tap for another swivel on the middle ramrod ferrule. The length of pull is 15 inches.

Class: Antique

Excellent with crisp engraving, 90% plus brown finish remaining on the barrel along with bright gold inlaid markings on the rib, 90% plus case colors on the frame and furniture, bright heat blue colors on the breechblock and hammer, and minor overall wear. The wood is exceptionally fine with distinct carving, minor flakes and repairs at the edges of the wrist, minor scratches and dings, a couple of deeper scrapes on the cheekpiece, and smooth oiled finish. Mechanically excellent. This is a rare and desirable exhibition quality Remington shotgun. Remington Rolling Block Shotguns are already very hard to acquire, and examples of this high quality are rarely even seen!

1st Generation Colt Sheriff's Model" Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 1068 (Sale Order: 69 of 674)

Highly Desirable Richmond, Texas, Factory Documented First Generation Colt "Sheriff's Model" Single Action Army Revolver with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1904 in "Sheriff's Model" configuration with factory documented 4 inch barrel. The ejectorless Colt "Sheriff's Model" Single Action Army Revolver is one of the rarest and most sought after variations of the legendary Peacemaker. In "The Official Record of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver, 1873-1895" the authors stressed the rarity of the ejectorless SAAs as a whole (barrel lengths ranged from 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches in the study) and state that "just under 600 ejectorless Single Action Army revolvers were produced in all calibers from 1882 to the 1930s." The revolver correctly lacks an ejector rod. The barrel has the two-line Hartford address on top and "45 COLT" on the left side. The left side of the frame has the two-line, three-date marking followed by an encircled Rampant Colt. Matching numbers are found on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The accompanying factory letter states the revolver was sold to H.L. Dyer of Richmond, Texas, and shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. of Chicago, Illinois, on December 27, 1904 with a 4 inch barrel in .45 caliber, blue finish, and type of stocks not listed. This was a two gun shipment. H.L Dyer was a hardware store in Richmond. Whether on the hip of a lawman, carried by an outlaw or under the counter of a storekeeper's shop, the "Sheriff's Model" Colt SAA was at the front lines. This example has all the appearance of serving as a trustworthy companion.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very good plus displaying a pleasing untouched original smooth brown patina associated with a lifetime of great "working gun" character, retaining 20% original blue finish in the protected areas. The grips are very good with a repaired chip at the toe (right panel) and highly attractive grain and mellow aged color. Mechanically excellent.

Engraved Muleshoe, Texas City Marshal Badge

Lot # 1069 (Sale Order: 70 of 674)

Historic Engraved Muleshoe, Texas City Marshal Badge with Muleshoe Marked Coin Purse

Few items from the American Frontier are more iconic than a sheriff or marshal's badge, and this example is no exception. Likely manufactured around the early 20th century, this piece was made for the city marshal of Muleshoe, Texas. The history of Muleshoe began with the establishment of a ranch in northwest Texas, which Henry Black named Muleshoe Ranch. The town itself was established in 1913 when a railway was laid between Lubbock and Farwell, and they simply borrowed the name from the nearby ranch. The town expanded rapidly through the early 20th century, becoming the Bailey County seat in 1917. The badge itself is of German silver and shows the iconic law enforcement shield shape with some light border engraving and a six-pointed star at the center. It is engraved with "MARSHAL/TEXAS/MULESHOE". There are no maker's markings. Includes a leather coin purse which is marked "YOUR-FRIEND/MULESHOE/ELEVATOR-INC./Muleshoe---Texas". It is unclear whether the badge was presented by the elevator company or whether the purse was simply used to store the badge when not in use.

Class: Other

Very fine, showing a mostly bright patina with some scattered small patches of brown patina, a few light handling marks, and crisp engraving overall. The pouch is fine with mild wear and patina.

Late 19th Century Texas "Hope" Saddle

Lot # 1070 (Sale Order: 71 of 674)

Very Scarce Late 19th Century Texas "Hope" Saddle

Created by the Hope brothers of Washington County, Texas in the 1830s, the "Hope" pattern saddle would go on to be used during the Civil War, and after the war become the quintessential "cowboy" saddle of the American Frontier. Examples of these Hope saddles used by Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Joseph E. Johnston are currently held in various collections. These saddles were more often than not worked as hard as the cattlemen that sat in them, and remain highly collectible in almost any condition, making high condition examples like this incredibly scarce. This particular example was likely made in south Texas during the 1870s-1880s, indicated by the use of decorative nail and washer sets and the Mexican influenced "charro" type flattened pommel. There is some light border tooling present on the leather, the decorative brass nails and washers, and pewter mountings with five-pointed stars at the corners of the skirt. It retains both blevins and their fenders, with what appear to be the original wood stirrups. Also includes two billet straps, a lasso/rope, and a 17 July 1997 dated letter of authentication from R. Stephen Dorsy.

Class: Other

Very good overall, showing general moderate wear from use, some moderate age-cracking scattered throughout, and a dark aged patina on metal components. This is a rare opportunity to add a scarce Hope saddle in above average condition to your collection!

"Frontier Used" Sharps Model 1874 Business Rifle in .45-90

Lot # 1071 (Sale Order: 72 of 674)

"Frontier Issued" Sharps Bridgeport Model 1874 Business Rifle in .45-90

The Sharps Model 1874 was one of the classic western firearms and were particularly popular with buffalo hunters. The rifle offered is full of unmistakable frontier character, and would display well in any antique American arms collection. The rifle has a period shortened barrel, which essentially made it into a handy carbine, and was likely a trusty sidearm that saw plenty of time in and out of the saddle out on the open plains hunting. Period added blade front sight and period added fixed notch rear sight in place of the previous standard rear sight, Old Reliable marking and Bridgeport address on top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight, "BUSINESS 45" on the left of the breech, "CAL 45" on top at the breech, upside down "90" on the right of the breech, matching visible serial numbers on the underside of the barrel and upper tang, double set triggers, smooth stock and forearm. This Business rifle appears to have been period rechambered from its standard .45-70 Government, or ".45 Business" chambering. The chamber measures at 2.4 inches and properly chambers a .45-90 WCF cartridge as well as a .45-2 4/10 Sharps cartridge (both are nearly identical dimensionally), which would have allowed this frontier Sharps the ability to take down some larger game.

Class: Antique

Very good overall as "frontier issued" and period modified with a mix of brown and gray patina, the frame with a silvery-gray patina, mild overall wear, patches of mild oxidation, and numerous nicks, scuffs, scratches and minor cracks in the wood typical of a rugged working gun. Mechanically fine. Serving as a true piece of Americana, this "Frontier Used" Sharps Business rifle is as real as it gets, with a desirable "been there done that" look.

Winchester First Model 1876 "Open Top" Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 1072 (Sale Order: 73 of 674)

Winchester First Model 1876 "Open Top" Lever Action Rifle with Scarce Heavy Barrel and Factory Letter

This early production Winchester Model 1876 rifle has the seldom seen "open top" frame, whereas the later Model 1876s were fitted with dust covers. Only around 3,000 of these "open tops" were produced out of the total of 63,871 manufactured between 1876 and 1897. The Winchester Model 1876 was highly prized on the Western Frontier by those who didn't wish to take a chance on .44-40 having enough stopping power to halt whatever threats they might face. The included factory letter confirms the rare heavy 28 inch octagon barrel and set trigger. The letter also states the rifle was received in the warehouse on October 22, 1878 and shipped the same day. A heavy barrel on a Model 1876 is a very rare feature. George Madis estimated that 1 of each 1,000 Model 1876s manufactured had a factory heavy barrel (see "The Winchester Book," page 253). The rifle is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The top barrel flat has the two-line address/patent dates legend ahead of the rear sight. The rifle correctly lacks a caliber designation as early production Model 1876s were offered only in .45-75 WCF. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1876." The buttstock is fitted with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Good displaying all the appearance of a trusted well traveled rifle that saw a lifetime of use in the challenging environment of the American West. The period non-factory replacement wood is fair showing "working gun" character with a repair in the wrist and a couple absent slivers at upper tang. Set trigger needs work, otherwise mechanically functions. A scarcity in lever action arms collecting, this Winchester "open top" Model 1876 rifle has all the look and feel of having survived the wilds of the West!

Colt Model 1877 Thunderer DA Revolver with Freund's Patent Sight

Lot # 1073 (Sale Order: 74 of 674)

Colt Model 1877 Thunderer Double Action Revolver with Pearl Grips and Rare Freund's Patent Sight

Manufactured in 1883. Two-line address on top of the barrel with standard patent markings on the left side of the frame. The front sight is a Freund & Bro. "famous muzzle sight" and is marked "FREUND'S/-PATENT-". Freund & Bro. patented this sight on April 17, 1877 and where attempting to make better front sight that would work as well in low light as it did in the sun. For more information and the patent drawing see page 176/77 of "Freund & Bro.: Pioneer Gunmakers to the West" by F. J. Pablo Balentine. A sight such as this would have been highly desirable for anyone, lawmen and outlaw alike, who depended on the accuracy of their sidearm on the Frontier. A piece of Old West history!

Class: Antique

Fine, retaining 70% original nickel finish with some areas showing frosting. Some pitting is present just ahead of and on the front of the cylinder with light oxidation scattered throughout. The grips are very good with some shrinkage, a chip to the bottom of the left panel, and an overall attractive aged look. Mechanically fine. An interesting Colt Model 1877 Thunderer with a desirable period modification, giving it the true feel of a Frontier firearm!

Antique Colt Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolver

Lot # 1074 (Sale Order: 75 of 674)

Antique First Generation Colt Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolver with F.T. Frazier of Colorado Marked Holster Money Belt Rig

Manufactured in 1898, these Frontier Six Shooter Revolvers were very popular in the American West through the "Wild West" period and into the 20th century due to their ability to be paired with Winchester's lever actions that shared the same caliber. When this example was made, much of the American West remained very much "wild", with this example showing the "been there, done that" look. The top of the barrel has the standard two-line address and the Frontier Six Shooter marking is on the left. The left side of the frame has the standard two-line patent dates followed by the circled Rampant Colt. The matching serial number is on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The assembly number "888" is stamped inside the loading gate. Includes a leather holster rig by F.T. Frazier of Pueblo, Colorado and 19 unprimed .44-40 WCF rounds.

Class: Antique

Very good displaying "frontier issue" appearance with traces of original blue finish remaining in the sheltered areas, including on the barrel under the ejector rod housing. The age shrunken grips are also very good and show typical age lines and have an attractive, mellow, aged appearance. Mechanically fine. The holster rig is very good. A great example of Colt's famed Frontier Six Shooter, paired with a Colorado-made Frazier holster rig, which together show all the allure and grit of the Western Frontier!
