Factory Engraved Marlin Deluxe Model 1895 Takedown Rifle

Lot # 1025 (Sale Order: 26 of 674)

Outstanding Special Order Factory Game Panel Scene Engraved Marlin Deluxe Model 1895 Lever Action Takedown Rifle

Manufactured in 1896, the second year of production. The rifle is richly engraved with a factory No. 2 pattern consisting of scrollwork, borders, and wonderful game panel scenes. The left side of the receiver is decorated with a hound chasing down an stag scene inside an oval panel. A circular panel depicting a standing stag is engraved on the right side. Flourishes of scrollwork extend to the top and bottom of the receiver, upper tang, bolt, exposed barrel flats at the breech, takedown collar, and forend cap. At the time this rifle was manufactured Conrad Friedrich Ulrich Jr. was the engraver for Marlin and did a majority of the engraving for Marlin from 1881 until 1910 when he left for Winchester, spending a lifetime embellishing some of the finest high art firearms of the period. The rifle is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line Marlin legend ahead of the rear sight and the caliber designation "40-60" at the breech. The 28 inch part octagon barrel and half magazine are special order features. The top of the receiver is marked "MARLIN SAFETY." The upper tang is marked "MODEL/1895." The highly figured deluxe walnut forearm and pistol grip stock have factory "B" multi-point checkering. The buttstock is fitted with a checkered hard rubber Marlin buttplate. These early production big frame factory engraved lever action Marlins saw hard use in such remote places like the Great plains, Rocky Mountains, and Alaska region. Rarely are these models found in high condition.

Class: Antique

Excellent. The barrel and magazine tube retain 95% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The receiver retains 90% plus vivid original case colors. The lever retains 75% original case colors. The takedown collar and hammer retain 95% plus original case colors. 95% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The wood is also excellent with some minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. An outstanding example of Marlin artistry at the end of the 19th century worthy of the finest collection.

Documented Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 .50 Express Rifle

Lot # 1026 (Sale Order: 27 of 674)

Exceptional Documented Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 .50 Express Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This is a rare special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Lever Action Rifle chambered for the desirable 50/110 WCF Express cartridge. This rifle is accompanied by 1998 and 2017 letters from the Cody Firearms Museum. The 2017 Cody letter describes this Model 1886 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 50/110, Barrel Type; Octagon, Barrel Length: 28 inches, Trigger: Plain, Checkered stock, Pistol grip" and "Sights: Lyman front and rear and seats". The Cody letters states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on July 6, 1894, and repair and returned on January 26, 1895, and May 24, 1895 (writer surmises it was a mechanical issue). The barrel and full-length magazine have a blue finish. The bolt and loading gate are bright blue. The forearm cap, receiver, trigger lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, fancy grade, American walnut with "Style H" factory checkering and high polish piano finish. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The special order, 28-inch, full octagon barrel has a "Winchester Express" front sight with white bead and a Lyman "Winchester Express" rear sight with single folding leaf. The rear sight leaf has a flat top and white sighting triangle. A Lyman folding combination rear sight with coarse knurled post is mounted on the receiver tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber: "50 EX" is stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number is stamped in script numerals between the lower tang screws. Introduced around 1894 for the Model 1886 rifle, the 50-100 or "50 Express" cartridge was comparable to some British African cartridges. The 50 Express cartridge was not popular in the United States and was discontinued in 1910. Winchester Model 1886 rifles chambered for the 50 Express cartridge are extremely desirable.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine. The octagonal barrel and full-length magazine have 95% of the original blue finish. The barrel markings are sharp. The breech bolt retains 97% original bright blue finish. 90% of the niter blue on the loading gate remains. The case colors on the forearm cap are muted but show minimal wear. The receiver has nearly 80% of the vivid original case colors, minor finish wear on the front flares, and has silvered slightly on the bottom. The hammer, trigger, and sides of the lever have nearly all of the case colors. The case colors on the bottom of the lever have faded slightly to a dull silver-brown patina. The heel of the crescent buttplate retains mostly silvered out case colors. The case colors on the bottom of the buttplate have silvered and there are traces of pitting on the buttplate toe and edge of the heel. The highly figured, fancy grade, walnut stock and forearm are all in excellent condition. The fine checkering is sharp with minimal handling wear. At least 95% of the original high polish piano finish remains. Wear is limited to a few scattered and very insignificant handling marks. This is an exceptional example of a rare special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 .50 Express Rifle.

Early New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action Carbine

Lot # 1027 (Sale Order: 28 of 674)

Exceptional Early Production New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action Carbine with Rare 21 Inch Barrel

This is an exceptionally fine example of a really nice, all original New Haven Arms Co. marked Volcanic lever action carbine that was manufactured circa 1857 with a rare 21 inch barrel. According to "Volcanic Firearms: Predecessor to the Winchester Rifle" by Lewis and Rutter, authorities estimate fewer than one-hundred New Haven Carbines with 21 inch barrels were produced (page 79). The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one-line legend: "NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854". These abbreviated marks which eliminated "VOLCANIC REPEATING ARMS CO." were introduced in April 1857 after Oliver Winchester took control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co. The serial number, "54", is stamped on the left side of the lower receiver tang, written in pencil on the face of the stock wrist, stamped on the shank of each of the hand-fitted stock and buttplate screws and stamped on the inside of the buttplate heel. It has the standard blued octagon barrel and integral magazine, brass receiver and crescent buttplate and casehardened hammer and loading lever. The straight grain walnut stock has a varnished finish. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade. A niter blue rear sight with elevator thumb wheel is dovetail-mounted on the receiver. These revolutionary Volcanic repeating carbines featured a self-cocking lever action with an integral magazines and were chambered for a cartridge with a self-contained propellant and primer. Although not a huge success, the lever action design with integral magazine combined with a self contained cartridge did usher in the far more successful and legendary Henry rifle and also the Model 1866 and 1873 Winchester rifles.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine with 70% of the original blue finish still remaining on the barrel and integral magazine, thinning and fading to a gray patina finish in areas. There are some spots of fine pitting on the top and sides of the barrel in 2-3 areas. The barrel markings/legend is clear and distinct. The untouched receiver and side plates are all original with the edges of the side plates nice and sharp and matching to the receiver and now have a nice aged mustard yellow look. The same matching attractively aged patina as on the buttplate. The fine stock retains much of its original varnish overall with several nicks and chips on the sides and under sides and the left side showing extensive crazing of the varnish in the area between the receiver tangs. The screw heads are all in excellent condition. An extremely nice, all original, early production New Haven Arms Volcanic carbine.

Peruvian Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Carbine

Lot # 1028 (Sale Order: 29 of 674)

Exceptional Peruvian Presentation Early Production Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Carbine with Desirable Henry Barrel Address

Manufactured in 1867. The left side plate is engraved with an inscription: "CORONEL BORGONO/with Complements of/JUAN G. MEIGGS." Justiniano Borgono (1836-1921) was a Peruvian military officer and politician. He enlisted in the army in 1856 with the rank of lieutenant and fought in the civil war initiated by General Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco in 1856-1858. He left the army after the civil war only to return to service at the beginning of the Pacific War, also known as the Guano and Salitre War (1879-1883). Borgono was promoted to the rank of colonel and was wounded in the right leg and taken prisoner while fighting in the Battle of San Juan and Chorrillos. Despite promising his captors to never again take up arms against the Chileans in exchange for being released, he nevertheless returned to the battlefield under the command of General Andre Caceres and was wounded again at the Battle of Huamachuco (July 10, 1883). Over the next several years, Borgono held several government positions, including Minister of War and Navy. After the sudden death of President Morales Bermudez, Borgono assumed the presidency after the suspension of general elections on April 1,1894. As acting president, Borgono called for new elections for the office of president as well as all members of congress. The sole presidential candidate was Borgono’s old war buddy, General Caceres, who easily won and assumed power on August 10, 1894. For his efforts, Borgono was promoted to brigadier general. The elections were later seen as unconstitutional, and the election results were challenged by the opposition parties, thus initiating a civil war. Borgono fled to Argentina and took up farming. In 1901, he returned to Peru to participate in the Council of General Officials. The American brothers Juan and Henry Meiggs came to Peru in 1868 to build a railroad. Already successful railroad builders in Chile, the Meiggs brothers built several railway lines in Peru before Henry died in 1877. In Peru, the brothers were in over their heads and found themselves facing bankruptcy at the time when Henry suffered a stroke and died a few months later. Struggling to find a way out, they proposed printing their own money called “Meiggs’ bills.” A skeptical public rejected the idea. Before Henry’s death, the brothers published a book detailing the Peruvian railways from 1826 to 1871. It is therefore plausible that this carbine was given to Borgono by Juan Meiggs as return for a favor or to elicit a favor. This early production carbine has the Second Model features which include: flared receiver at the junction with the forearm, single upper tang screw and internal receiver serial numbers. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the first style legend "HENRY'S-PATENT-OCT. 16. 1860/KING'S-PATENT-MARCH 29.1866" between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. In addition to the early Henry markings, this carbine has numerous early features which include: uncrowned muzzle, threaded magazine cap, barrel band with integral front sight, two-leaf rear sight with "5" and "3" elevation markings, unmarked cartridge elevator, indented loading gate secured by a single screw, small loading lever latch and Henry style buttplate with hinged trap. The hammer has borderless knurling on the spur, and the left side of the receiver has a staple mounted saddle ring. The barrel, magazine and barrel bands are blued, and the rear sight, hammer, lever and trigger are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are oil finished, straight grain American walnut. The serial number is stamped on the left side of the lower tang beneath the stock, in the upper tang inlet of the stock and on the inside of the buttplate. The left side of the lower tang also has the letters “CO.” A non-Winchester number "11431" is stamped on the bottom of the lower tang behind the trigger; the significance of this number is unknown. A small slashed out “BP” crest is stamped on the lower tang just ahead of the lever latch.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. This carbine is all original and remains in exceptional condition. The barrel and magazine retain 75% of the original blue finish with traces of plum patina. The metal surfaces are smooth and the barrel legend is sharp. The upper barrel band has 70% of the bright original blue finish remaining while the lower band has a silver-gray patina. The rear sight has crisp markings and retains nearly all of the case colors. The loading gate has 85% of the original niter blue finish. Substantial amount of blue are present on the extractors. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 60% of the original muted case colors. The distinctive brass receiver and buttplate are in very fine-excellent condition. The bras

Winchester First Model 1876 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 1029 (Sale Order: 30 of 674)

Outstanding and Rare Winchester First Model Open Top 1876 Lever Action "Centennial Model" Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter

The Winchester Model 1876 is known as the "Centennial Model" due to its introduction year and became very popular in the American west, especially among those who decided that the Model 1873 just didn't provide the stopping power they desired, most famously the Northwest Mounted Police. The carbine configuration in particular provided a superior level of firepower in portable package, similar in size to its smaller cousin, the 1873. With its larger more powerful calibers, there was almost nothing on the frontier that the 1876 wasn't capable of stopping, man or beast. This example was manufactured in 1877, the second year of production, as a First Model with no provision for a dust cover. George Madis notes in "The Winchester Book", that after serial number 1600, dust covers were offered upon request, but prior to serial number 3000 they are rarely seen, becoming gradually more common after that number was reached. Madis also notes that approximately seven out of every eight Model 1876s manufactured was a standard rifle, making the carbines like this relatively scarce. The top of the barrel has the two-line address/King's patent marking in front of the early pattern, non-adjustable, two-leaf rear sight. The model designation is marked on the upper tang and serial number on the lower. This example correctly lacks caliber markings, as .45-75 W.C.F. was the only caliber offered until 1879. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight, previously mentioned two-leaf rear sight, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth, near full-length forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. These carbines often saw hard frontier use in the hands of the Northwest Mounted Police or others who valued their firepower, making examples in outstanding condition like this one incredibly scarce. The included factory letter states the carbine was received in the warehouse on March 15, 1878 and shipped on May 9, 1878.

Class: Antique

Excellent, retains 95% of the original blue finish with minor thinning on the frame, 75% of the vibrant original case colors, and 80% of the original niter blue on the loading gate with the balance having thinned to a smooth grey patina and a small patch of light spotting/surface pitting on the left at the muzzle. The wood is also excellent with a few scattered light dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. If you are looking for a benchmark, standard configuration Winchester First Model 1876 carbine for your collection; look no further!

The accompanying factory letter confirms the 32 inch no. 5 round barrel in .45 2 4/10 caliber, plain trigger, mid-range and windgauge sights, and shotgun butt as well as received in the warehouse on February 13, 1897 and shipped on February 16. Antique Winchester First Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 1033 (Sale Order: 34 of 674)

Highly Desirable Early Production Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Introduced in 1873, Winchester's Model 1873 was, generally speaking, an updated version of their legendary Model 1866. The 1873 quickly gained popularity on the Western Frontier and would forge a legacy that would see it remain one of the iconic firearms of the American West, alongside the Winchester 1866 and Colt Single Action Army revolver. This example was manufactured in 1876, when much of the American West remained an untamed frontier. These guns found popularity with settlers, lawman, outlaws, and Native Americans due to their rugged dependability and portable firepower. The First Model receiver has the integral dust cover guides on either side of the ejection port and the impressed, finely checkered oval "thumb print" grip area. The top of the barrel on this example has the standard two-line address and correctly lacks a caliber marking, as the only caliber offered was .44-40 W.C.F. until 1879. The upper tang has the standard model marking and the serial number is on the lower tang. It is fitted with a blade front sight that is integral to the barrel band, an early two-leaf rear sight, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor carbine buttplate (cleaning rod not included).

Class: Antique

Very fine, retains 60% plus of the original blue finish, 50% of the original case colors on the hammer, mostly slivered out lever, and 40% of the bright original niter blue on the loading gate with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina and a few scattered patches of light surface pitting/oxidation. The wood is also fine with some minor handling marks scattered throughout. Mechanically excellent. These early production Winchester First Model 1873 carbines are difficult to find surviving in any condition, a fine example such as this would make a great addition to your collection!

Highly Desirable, Documented Antique First Year Production Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine Serial Number 1294 in Desirable .38-55 W.C.F.

Manufactured in 1894, this is a fine example of a first year production Winchester Model 1894 saddle ring carbine in .38-55 W.C.F. The first model receiver has the standard "10 o'clock" screw near the loading gate. These early Model 1894 carbines often saw hard use on the American Frontier and remain desirable in almost any condition, making examples like this one even more scarce. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two line address on top, caliber marking at the breech, and two small unknown proofs on the left at the breech, one a three-leaf clover-like symbol and the other a circled "A". The upper tang is marked with the three-line model, trademark, and patent date, while the early, four-digit serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. It is fitted with a pinned blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight, a saddle ring on the left of the receiver, and a pair of non-factory sling swivels installed on the rear barrel band and the bottom of the buttstock. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. The included copy of the factory letter states the carbine's serial number was applied on December 17, 1894 and the carbine was received in the warehouse on February 1, 1895 and shipped on February 12, 1895 in .38-55 caliber.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 40% of the original blue finish, 60% of the vibrant original case colors, and 30% of the bright original niter blue on the loading gate with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina and some speckling of light surface pitting concentrated mostly on the sides of the receiver. The refinished wood is very good with some scattered light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.

WWI Russian Contract Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Musket

Lot # 1036 (Sale Order: 37 of 674)

Desirable World War I Russian Contract Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Musket with Winchester Marked Bayonet

The outbreak of World War I in August of 1914 seemed to have taken the Russian Empire by surprise. Though they had a standing army of over one million prior to the war, and quickly added over another three million conscripts, they remained completely incapable of supplying such vast formations with arms, ammunition, and equipment. These shortages drove the Tsar to searching for arms and supplies in almost any form, from nearly anywhere they could be acquired. The Russian government approached nearly all major American arms companies, including Colt for Government Model pistols, Remington and New England-Westinghouse for Mosin-Nagant rifles, and striking a deal with Winchester for 300,000 Model 1895 muskets manufactured to Russian specifications and chambered in 7.62x54 R. By the time of the of the Russian Revolutions of February and October 1917, Winchester had virtually completed the contract. Many of these rifles were issued to Finnish and Baltic troops and saw hard use on the Eastern Front of World War I, through both revolutions of 1917, the civil war that followed, and some being shipped to Spain for use during their civil war of the 1930s, leaving relatively few surviving examples on the American market in any condition. This example was manufactured in 1916, the receiver having the distinguishing charger guides mounted on either side of the receiver. The standard Winchester markings are on the left of the receiver, upper tang, the serial number is on the lower tang, and Russian acceptance mark on the right of the receiver. The receiver ring has a Winchester oval proof and the "7.62/M.M." caliber marking. It is fitted with a pinned brass blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. It is mounted with a musket length forearm and upper handguard, as well as a straight grip stock with Russian inspection stamp on the right and a trapdoor military pattern buttplate (cleaning rod not included). Includes a correct Winchester marked bayonet with scabbard and frog, as well as a "OULU" marked Finnish canvas sling.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Fine, retains 40% of the original blue finish with the balance having thinned to a smooth grey-brown patina with some scattered speckling of light surface pitting and oxidation. The wood is also fine with some scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet and scabbard are fine showing mostly bright with some scattered light pitting. These Russian contract Winchester Model 1895 muskets are rare in any condition, don't miss this opportunity!

Garate Anitua y Cia El Tigre Model 1892 Style Carbine

Lot # 1037 (Sale Order: 38 of 674)

Phenomenal Garate Anitua y Cia El Tigre Model 1892 Style Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

Manufactured c. 1915-1937, with production reportedly significantly disrupted during World War I, while Spanish arms manufacturers cranked out handguns for military contracts by the thousands. These carbines were sold commercially in Spain, with many being utilized by police forces, and many were shipped to South America to satisfy a growing market. This example in particular appears to be of a presentation grade, above and beyond general production and has remained in abnormally high condition given the typical use these working guns received. The standard Garate Anitua address on top of the barrel along with the "CAL. 44 L" caliber marking, meaning "44 Largo", the Spanish name for .44-40 W.C.F. The tiger trademark is on the left side of the frame and the serial number is on the bottom. The three-line model marking is on the upper tang. It is fitted with a blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight, saddle ring on the left of the receiver, and sling swivels on the lower barrel band and buttstock. It is mounted with a very finely figured, smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor steel buttplate. Includes a black leather sling.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent, retains 97% plus original blue finish, which shows a slight plum hue, and 98% of the vibrant original case colors with some scattered light handling marks overall. The wood is very fine with a few scattered light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.

Special Order Engraved Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 Rifle

Lot # 1038 (Sale Order: 39 of 674)

Special Order Panel Scene Factory Engraved Casehardened Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The factory letter indicates this rifle had its serial number applied on August 30, 1894, and was received in the warehouse on September 28, 1894, and shipped the same day in order 20938. It lists the rifle in .45/70 caliber with a 1/2 octagon barrel 24 inches in length, plain trigger, and a checkered pistol grip stock. There is no mention of the engraving; most likely a factory recording error. The barrel has a beaded blade front sight, the two-line address, three-leaf rear sight with inlaid sight lines, and "45-70" at the breech. A half-magazine is fitted underneath. The casehardened forend cap, frame, and buttplate feature factory engraving consisting mainly of tight scrolls and a variety of border designs along with a pair of deer in a wooded scene on the left side. The engraving style is very similar to the rifle on page 159 of "The Book of Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson which is noted as signed "J. ULRICH." The upper tang has the model designation, and the lower tang has the patent marking and serial number on the bottom and "192 XX" on the left side under the stock. "192" is repeated in the upper tang mortise. The deluxe pistol grip stock and forearm have style H checkering, and the grip has a contrasting inlay.

Class: Antique

Fine with crisp engraving and markings, 90% original blue finish, 30% original case colors, smooth gray and brown patina on the balance, a few dings, and generally only minor overall wear. The wood is fine and has crisp checkering, attractive figure, minor shrinkage, and light dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. Overall, this is a very attractive and rare special order casehardened deluxe Model 1886 with beautiful factory engraving.

Exhibition Winchester Deluxe Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle

Lot # 1039 (Sale Order: 40 of 674)

Extremely Rare Documented Antique Factory Engraved, Nickel and Gold-Plated, Factory Exhibition Winchester Deluxe Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This is an extremely rare deluxe factory engraved, nickel/gold-plated Second Model Winchester Model 1890 slide action rifle that was manufactured in 1897. The accompanying factory letter confirms the caliber as .22 short, checkered pistol grip stock, factory engraving and gold and nickel plating. The rifle was received in the warehouse on February 20, 1897, and shipped on February 22. The letter lists several "repaired and returned dates," which are 9-13-97, 1-6-98, 3-18-98, 12-28-98 and 2-9-99. Having several return dates in close proximity to one another suggests that this rifle was a traveling factory show gun. The 1897 American Institute Fair, Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition (1897), Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition (1898) and California's Golden Jubilee (1898) are a few possibilities where this rifle might have been showcased. This rifle is pictured and described in Ned Schwing's "Winchester Slide-Action Rifles, Volume I" on page 167. The rifle features a very desirable factory "$6.00" number 8 engraving pattern that was suited for small frame rifles like the 1890. The engraving is illustrated in Schwing's "Winchester Slide-Action Rifles, Volume I" on page 169, George Madis' book "The Winchester Book" on page 525 and in R.L. Wilson's book "The Book of Winchester Engraving" on page 218. This engraving features delicate scrollwork and oval panel scenes depicting rabbits (right side) and squirrels (left side). Accents of scrollwork appear on the bolt, trigger guard, lower tang and buttplate tang. Schwing lists only three Second Model, Model 1890s with the number 8 pattern engraving and gold-plated receiver that fall into the 15,552-112,000 serial number range (page 178) and a grand total of seven Model 1890s with the number 8 pattern engraving and gold-plated receiver that fall into the 1-329,999 serial number range (page 182), leaving no doubt that this is an extremely rare variation of Winchester's first slide action rifle. As a Second Model, it has the concealed locking lugs, takedown frame and serial number only on the lower tang. It is equipped with a combination Beach front, fixed notched rear and Lyman tang sights. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "22 SHORT" at the breech. The barrel and magazine are nickel-plated, and the remaining surfaces are plated in gold. Mounted on a nicely figured forearm and pistol grip stock. The stock features checkering in the grip area, a hard rubber Winchester grip cap and a factory engraved gold-plated crescent steel buttplate. The round highly finished forearm has 12 grooves.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine. The barrel and magazine retain 85% plus factory nickel finish showing some minor flaking and blistering. The remaining surfaces retain 70% factory gold plating with the balance a smooth dark gray patina. Note that the gold plating is delicate by nature and a strong percentage of remaining finish, as seen here, is rarely encountered. The wood is very fine showing a couple of repaired small chips near the frame, a number of minor pressure dents and scratches, crisp checkering overall and retaining most of the original finish. Mechanically excellent. A factory documented and engraved two-tone Model 1890 for the serious Winchester slide action rifle collector! The rarity of this rifle means it missing from even the most advanced collections.

Antique Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Rifle in .40-82 W.C.F.

Lot # 1044 (Sale Order: 45 of 674)

Fine Antique Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Single Shot Rifle in .40-82 W.C.F.

Introduced in 1885, Winchester's .40-82 cartridge was designed to handle North America's big game and succeeded in earning a positive reputation with hunters of elk and moose and was also used for hunting bears. This example was manufactured in 1891, when much of the Western Frontier remained wild, and is a very good example of a "no frills" big game hunting rifle. The top flat of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and the caliber marking is at the breech. The "3" barrel weight marking is on the bottom flat of the barrel just ahead of the forearm. The lower tang is marked with the patent date and serial number. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable buckhorn/sporting rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth, Schnabel tip forearm with ebony insert and a straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Fine, retains 60% of the faded original blue finish and 30% of the vibrant original case colors, mostly in sheltered areas, with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina, some patches of light pitting at the muzzle, and a patch of minor file/tool marks on the top flat of the barrel. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is also fine with some scattered light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.

Flat Side Winchester Model 1885 .45 2 4/10 Sharps Musket

Lot # 1045 (Sale Order: 46 of 674)

Documented Early Production Three Digit Serialized Special Order Flat Side Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Single Shot Musket in Scarce .45 Sharps 2 4/10 with Factory letter

This very early production flat sided Winchester Model 1885 High Wall musket is chambered in scarce .45-90 Sharps and would have made for the perfect companion to hunt big game such as moose, bison and elk. In "The Winchester Single-Shot" author John Campbell identified .45-90 Sharps among the rarest calibers of the Model 1885: "These very rare chamberings, among others, are known to exist. Virtually all were unavailable in normal production. Others were available on an extremely limited basis or through custom order" (see page 97). The accompanying factory letter states the musket was received in the warehouse on January 16, 1886, shipped on January 16, 1886 and shipped again on September 27, 1889 and lists the following features: 32 inch no. 1 round barrel in .45 2 4/10 caliber, plain trigger (currently a set trigger, like fitted when it was returned to the factory), military front and Hotchkiss military rear windgauge sights, Hotchkiss pattern musket forearm, "Swiveled," and "R. Butt." Early production features include the flat sided receiver, forearm without finger groove, and two barrel bands. The barrel is marked with the two-line Winchester address ahead of the rear sight and caliber designation ("45 SHARPS 2 4/10") at the breech. The upper tang is drilled and tapped for sight mounting. The lower tang has the patent date marking and serial number. The replacement buttstock is fitted with a shotgun type buttplate (the letter calls for "R.Butt.)

Class: Antique

Good, displaying a mottled gray patina of a well traveled firearm. The revarnished wood is very good with scattered minor handling marks. Set trigger needs work, otherwise action functions properly. A very early flat side Winchester Model 1885 High Wall musket in scarce .45-90 Sharps that saw authentic use. A Model 1885 in this configuration is missing from the most advanced collections.

Excellent and Desirable Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Two-Band Musket in Scarce .22 LR

Manufactured in 1907, this is an outstanding example of a Winchester Model 1885 High Wall "two-band" musket chambered in the ever-desirable, .22 Long Rifle. These two-band muskets are less commonly encountered than their single band "Winder" counterparts, particularly in this caliber. This example is marked with the standard two-line address and patent date on top of the barrel, with the "22 LONG R" caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line patent date and trademark, while the serial number is on the lower tang. It is fitted with a pinned blade front sight, a military style folding ladder rear sight, sling swivels on both barrel bands as well as the bottom of the buttstock, and a cleaning rod. Special Order Marlin Deluxe Model 1881 Short Rifle in .45-70

Lot # 1049 (Sale Order: 50 of 674)

Highly Desirable Documented Special Order Marlin Deluxe Model 1881 Lever Action Short Rifle in .45-70 Gov. with Desirable 20 Inch Barrel and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1887, this is an incredibly scarce example of a factory documented special order Marlin Deluxe Model 1881 short rifle in .45-70. Marlin originally envisioned the Model 1881 as a hardy "working gun", and it was a direct competitor to Winchester's Model 1876. Though it had a much stronger action than its Winchester competitor, only 20,535 Model 1881s were manufactured between 1881 and 1903, while 63,871 of the Winchester were made. With its strong action, the Marlin 1881 was able to chamber the popular .45-70 Government cartridge, which had become a standard for the U.S. military as well as being popular on the Western Frontier, while the Winchester 1876 could not. Due to its utilitarian, "no frills" nature, very few of the Model 1881 rifles left the factory with special order deluxe features, making examples like this one exceedingly rare. Interestingly, while having been ordered with a fair amount of frills, this short rifle still has the feel of one that is all business, being chambered in the powerful .45-70 cartridge and having a short barrel and magazine for mobility. The included factory letter with this rifle lists it in .45-70 caliber with a 20 inch barrel and a pistol grip stock when shipped on 12 November 1887. While the factory records for Marlin 1881s are not complete, we do have some indication of the general rarity of certain features. According to noted Marlin historian and author William S. Brophy on p. 159 of "Marlin Firearms: A History of the Guns and the Company That Made Them", only 1,303 Model 1881s were ordered with a pistol grip stock. What truly makes this rifle a rarity however is the 20 inch barrel, with Brophy noting only four rifles ordered in that length. The top barrel flat on this example is marked with the standard two-line Marlin address and patent dates, while the caliber marking "45 Govt" is at the breech. The matching serial number is on the bottom of the receiver, the left side of the upper and lower tangs, the front face of the stock, inside the buttplate, and rear face of the forearm. The rear face of the nose cap is numbered "16464", which is likely a factory error as the cap appears to have been with the rifle since it left the factory. It is fitted with a beaded blade front sight (bead absent), elevation adjustable notch rear sight, and a mid-range peep sight mounted on the upper tang. It is mounted with a very finely figured, rifle length forearm with "No. B" pattern checkered, as well as an equally finely figured, pistol grip stock with matching checkering pattern and a smooth steel shotgun buttplate.

Class: Antique

Exceptionally fine, retains 85% plus of the original blue finish and 70% of the original case colors with the balance having thinned to a smooth grey patina. The wood is very fine with some scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. If you have been searching for both condition and rarity for your Marlin collection, look no further than this special order deluxe Model 1881 short rifle!
