Holland & Holland 10 Bore Single Barrel Hammer Paradox Gun

Lot # 477 (Sale Order: 476 of 664)

Very Rare Documented Holland & Holland 10 Bore Single Barrel Rotary Underlever Hammer Paradox Ball & Shot Gun

This very rare single barrel Paradox gun dating to 1898, one of only three single barrel 10 bore Paradox guns made, is described and illustrated in David J. Baker & Roger E. Lake, "Paradox: The Story of Col. G.V. Fosbery, Holland & Holland, and The Paradox Rifled Shot and Ball Gun", pp. 208-209. Serial number 15188 was the seventeenth 10 bore Paradox made from a total production of 101 and Holland & Holland’s Number Book notes it was shot and regulated on 8/1/98. The flat top round smoothbore barrel has the distinctive Paradox rifled choke at the muzzle, a bead sight with flip-up moon-sight, matted sighting flat, "HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND ST. LONDON. 'PARADOX.' FOSBERY PATENT." signed ahead of the dovetailed V-notch rear sight, London black powder proof marks, the serial number behind the lug, and an extractor. The casehardened rounded action has a scroll engraved tip to the underlever, engraved "CHARGE 8 DRAMS BRASS CASE 2 7/8 INCHES" on the left side, and rebounding casehardened back-action lock signed “HOLLAND & HOLLAND.” With figured walnut straight hand stock with 14 1/2 inch length of pull, including the rubber recoil pad and spacer, and checkered grip and forearm, the latter with dark horn tip. Norman R. Blank noted in his records that single barrel Paradox guns are much less common than the double barrel examples and "This one has no engraving and I believe was made for a man who couldn't afford the more expensive double barrel types." Norman R. Blank purchased this gun from James E. Serven circa 1956.

Class: Antique

Very fine with 85% plus of the blue and casehardened finish remaining, patches of mild oxidation/pitting and scratches on the barrel, and generally minor overall wear. The wood is fine and has slightly softened checkering, scratches and bruising, and moderate deterioration of the pad. Mechanically fine. This is an extraordinarily rare Holland & Holland Paradox: one of only three single barrel 10 bore Paradox guns made!

Provenance: The James Serven Collection; The Norman R. Blank Collection

Cased Engraved Gilt H. Holland Tranter Model 1868 Revolver

Lot # 478 (Sale Order: 477 of 664)

Beautiful Presentation Cased Exhibition Grade Finely Engraved Gilt H. Holland Tranter Model 1868 First Pattern Double Action Revolver with Noble Crest

While a fair number of Tranter revolvers have fine engraving, this is certainly the most extravagant Tranter we have seen, and its deluxe treatment by famed British royal gunmaker Harris Holland c. 1868-1876 certainly points towards a special use or recipient. The back of the grip and the handles of the screwdriver and cleaning rod are engraved with a coronet over a design that includes a "X" design and down-turned letter "B" highlighted with black enamel, and the same monogram is embossed on the lid of the leather on the case lid indicating royal ownership. The original owner's identity has not been found at this time, but the coronet appears to point towards a prince. The revolver is an early version of the Model 1868 with the long ejector. The blued barrel has a rounded blade front sight and "H Holland 98 New Bond St. London" in gold inlay along the top flat along with gold inlaid scrolls at the muzzle and breech end of the upper side flats, very fine scroll engraving, and lined borders. The long ejector rod is fitted underneath, and the gilded arm is marked "TRANTER'S PATENT" on the left side. The gold plated frame also has "W. TRANTERS/PATENT/5978" on the left at the breech, "WH" on the lower left, and beautiful scroll and floral engraving. The trigger guard and pommel cap feature coordinating engraving and gold plating, and the hammer, trigger, and remaining small parts are niter blue. The revolver comes in a leather bound oak P.E. Schafer case with green baize lined interior fitted to the revolver along with a cartridge block with some casings, gilt wrench, gilt James Dixon & Sons oiler, gilt blade and fittings on the screwdriver, and set of spare springs.

Class: Antique

Extremely fine with 90% plus of the bright original blue finish remaining on the barrel, an equal amount of original gold remaining on the cylinder, 75% original gold remaining on the frame and ejector arm, strong original gold on the protected areas of the remaining components, and smooth gray and brown patina on the balance. The engraving and markings remain nice and crisp, and strong original niter blue remains on many of the smaller components. The grip displays attractive natural creamy tones and faint grain patterns along with crisp monogram and nearly all of the black enamel. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good with mild age and storage wear on the leather exterior and minor contact wear on the interior. Cartridges are cracked. The other accessories are excellent with minimal age and storage related wear, including some fading of the gilding.

Scarce Factory Engraved J. Rigby & Co. Rising Third Bite Sidelock Dangerous Game Double Rifle in .500 Express

Manufactured between 1885 and 1890 according to information given on page 128 of Nigel Brown's "British Gunmakers Volume One: London". The rising third bite was designed by John Rigby and Thomas Bissell as patent number 1141 of 1879, and is an excellent example of the art of gunmaking. Though it was replaced by the much easier to produce doll's head type extensions, these early rising bite guns are a must have for any collector of 19th century British sporting arms. The rifle is built with blued steel barrels featuring a beaded blade front sight, a two leaf (one standing, one folding) rear sight on the matted solid rib, rear rib section with dovetail scope mounts, scroll engraving on the third bite extension, bands of engraving at the breech, front sling eye, chambers with a single extractor, and period London blackpowder proofs. The barrels are fitted to a casehardened rising third bite sidelock action which displays highly attractive scroll engraving covering much of the surface and surrounding "J. Rigby & Co." signatures on either lockplate before continuing onto the triggerguard, both tangs, and the underlever. The gun features bushed firing pins, double triggers, and a tang mounted manual safety. The rifle is mounted with a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered forend with a Deeley & Edge 1873 patent fastener and engraved fittings as well a pistol grip stock with teardrop carved drop points, horn grip cap, rear sling eye, and steel heel and toe plates around the checkered bare butt. Length of pull 14 5/8 inches. Weight 9 lbs. 9 oz.

The replacement wood is also very fine with some dings and scratches and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A great chance to own a classic English double rifle utilizing the rare rising third bite action!

Boss & Co. sits in the upper most tier of bespoke gunmaker's worldwide with every gun that they build a work of art. This is a chance to purchase a factory built pair of guns, a fleeting opportunity at an auction open to the public. Pairs of guns are a premier item in sporting collections, and this set is the creme de la creme of the pursuit. This pair is a perfect example of the words made famous by Donald Dallas with his book "Boss & Co.: Builders of Best Guns Only". Both guns were built on a casehardened assisted-opening sidelock action showing near full coverage rose & scroll engraving carried out by the in-house engravers with both niter blue and polished pins adding a fine contrast against the rich background. The sides of either action are marked "BOSS'S/PATENT" with "BOSS & Co" signed in banners on the lockplates. Each of the guns has gold inlaid number atop the toplever indicating their place in the pair. The guns feature a single trigger, gold centered cocking indicators located on either lockplate, and a tang mounted automatic safety switch with gold inlaid "SAFE" marking.
