Historic Arms Bren Mk 2SA Semi-Automatic Rifle

Lot # 427 (Sale Order: 426 of 664)

Historic Arms Bren Mk 2SA Semi-Automatic Rifle with Extra Magazines, Serial Number "082"

Manufactured in the United States using a combination of new-made components and military-surplus hardware as a semi-automatic, closed-bolt reproduction of the British Bren light machine gun. Licensed as a modified version of the Czech ZB-26 light machine gun in the late 1930s, the Bren, or "Bren Gun" as its users fondly called it, saw extensive use with Britain and Commonwealth forces throughout World War II, the Cold War era, and was even used in the Falklands War, before being phased out in the 1990s. This example is configured as a Bren Mk II, introduced in 1941 with simplified components for ease of manufacture. Features winged blade front and folding peep rear sight, a conical flash hider and adjustable gas block on the Australian "MA" marked and "10 43" dated barrel, and folding steel bipod. With Historic Arms markings on the left and "INGLIS/1943" marked on the right side of the receiver. During the rebuild process the "A" selector position was physically blocked, with only the "S" and "R" positions usable. Fitted with a smooth walnut pistol grip and buttstock with steel buttplate. Includes two khaki "Canadian broad arrow" marked dual Bren magazine web pouches, three extra magazines (one does not completely latch), a spare charging handle rod, and a Bren specific combination tool.

Class: Modern Long Gun

Excellent as re-manufactured by Historic Arms, retaining 98% plus parkerized finish with minimal overall handling marks and faint spotting. The walnut furniture is very fine as splice repaired, with a glued crack running up the comb of the buttstock. Mechanically excellent.

DWM 1902 Luger Carbine with Shoulder Stock and Holster

Lot # 433 (Sale Order: 432 of 664)

DWM Model 1902 Luger Semi-Automatic Carbine with Shoulder Stock and Holster

This is a fine example of a DWM Model 1902 Luger carbine that is complete with a shoulder stock. These carbines were an attempt by DWM to produce a lightweight rifle substitute. There were a total of 2,500 of this model reportedly produced in two serial number blocks. The desirable features of these carbines include the long frame, flat mainspring, grip safety, dished toggles, recessed/flat breech bolt, and the 11 3/4 inch barrel. Due to the longer barrel, these carbines have a small spring accelerator mechanism in the forearm that aids in cycling. Fitted with a three position rear sight (adjustable from 100-300 meters) mounted on top of the barrel in front of the receiver and a bead front sight mounted on a ramp on top of the barrel. The top of the chamber area is blank, and the front toggle has the DWM logo. Full serial number marked on the frame extension and the underside of the barrel. The last two digits of the serial number are marked on the bottom of the recoil lug, inside the forend, grip safety, trigger, takedown lever, side plate, breech bolt, and toggle assembly. Unnumbered replacement walnut grips. Fitted with a nickel plated magazine with a small flaming bomb stamped on the wooden base. The included period walnut shoulder stock features a checkered wrist, lower sling swivel, black horn buttplate, with the top of the attaching iron re-stamped with matching number "50" over top of two previous numbers. Includes a period leather holster.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine overall, retains 75% original blue finish with some edge wear, wear on the grip straps, and a patch of light pitting visible on the stock lug, light handling marks, replacement grips with a wear spot on the top area of right grip panel. Mechanically excellent. The shoulder stock is also fine with some light handling marks and dents, and re-stamped matching number. The period holster is fine with supple leather. This fine example of a DWM Model 1902 Luger carbine, complete with a shoulder stock and period holster, makes for a desirable example for the Luger collector!

H. Himmler Presentation J.P. Sauer 38H Pistol with Capture Paper

Lot # 434 (Sale Order: 433 of 664)

Extremely Rare Historic Heinrich Himmler Inscribed World War II Sniper Presentation J.P. Sauer Model 38H Semi-Automatic Pistol with Bring Back Paper

This is an extremely rare late production J. P. Sauer & Sohn Model 38H Heinrich Himmler sharpshooter prize presentation pistol. These highly coveted pistols were made as an award for German snipers for 100 confirmed kills during World War II, reportedly to be personally presented directly by SS leader Heinrich Himmler. 50 confirmed kills earned a leave from the front and a fancy watch, 100 confirmed kills awarded a choice of binoculars, a hunting rifle, or one of these "H. Himmler" inscribed 38H pistols, and 150 confirmed kills would earn a personal hunting trip with Himmler. There is believed to be only a handful of known Himmler sniper shooting prize Sauer 38H pistols that were captured at the end of World War II. This example is accompanied by an original bring back paper listing this pistol by serial number as brought back in a duffel bag by Private First Class Paul W. Sansone after the war on April 2, 1946. Paul W. Sansone, Jr. (March 28, 1925-September 12, 2014) of New Jersey originally enlisted with the U.S. Army on July 24, 1943, with no further details of his service located at the current time. This specific pistol falls directly into the noted range of the "H. Himmler" presentation pistols, however, it is not listed, and is fresh to the collector market as consigned directly from a relative of Paul W. Sansone, Jr. Another example of a Himmler presentation pistol with serial number 475396 (previously sold by Rock Island Auction, Lot 1553, Auction 83), one serial number off this pistol bearing serial number 475397, is pictured in the reference book "J. P Sauer & Sohns, A Historical Study of Sauer Automatic Pistols" by Jim Cate and Nico Van Gijn on page 353, with serial number 475400 also pictured on page 354 and mentioned as possibly being Himmler's personal sidearm that was captured at Himmler's mountain home near Zell am See, Austria by a member of the 101st Airborne. Page 356 of the book has a list of serial numbers of Himmler presentation pistols witnessed by the author including 475396, 475400, 475409 and 475412. Rock Island Auction also previously sold serial number 475401 (Lot 2587, Auction 70). This presentation Model 38H has the high-polish blue finish with the presentation inscription on the left side of the slide. The left side of the slide is inscribed "DEM SCHARFSCHUTZEN-" (to the sniper) followed by an engraved facsimile of the signature "H. Himmler." The right of the slide has the standard late production, two line factory legend "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL./CAL. 7.65" which is on the opposite side of standard production pistols. The pistol has checkered, black plastic grips with the encircled Sauer monogram on the left grip. The frame is serial numbered on the left below the slide serrations. It has "eagle/N" proofmarks on the right rear of the frame and slide and on the very front edge of the barrel. It comes complete with one blue finished magazine that is marked "CAL,.7.65." on the bottom of the floorplate.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Excellent, retains 90% plus original blue finish with some light edge and rear gripstrap wear. The inscription and markings are sharp. The grips are also excellent with a few light handling marks. Mechanically excellent. This historic H. Himmler inscribed Sauer 38H sniper presentation pistol, with bring back paper, would be a significant addition in any World War II German collection!

World War I Era Imperial Russian Contract DWM 1906 Luger Pistol

Lot # 435 (Sale Order: 434 of 664)

Extremely Rare DWM Imperial Russian Contract 1906 Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol

One of the rarest of the foreign contract Luger pistols, reportedly 1000 1906 pattern Lugers were manufactured for delivery to Imperial Russia, and very few made it back out again. Details on the exact destination or intended use of the pistols is under debate; some hold that it was a commercial contract piece, others that it was an explicit government contract. Either way, they went to Russia and for the most part stayed there, not being exported back out or released for surplus sale in any notable quantity, leaving only a scant number (possibly low double digits) available on the American market. Overall mechanical features are typical for the 1906, with a set of fixed sights, thumb and grip safeties (safe in upper position), and a smooth back strap, along with the "DWM" marking on the front toggle link and serial numbering in the "commercial" pattern. Most of the distinctive features relate to the markings, particularly the chamber crest of a pair of crossed Mosin-Nagant rifles, Cyrillic markings are present on the extractor ("Charged") and the upper safety position ("Fire"), in place of the "GESICHERT (safe)" and "GELADEN (loaded)" indicators on the upper safety position and left side of the extractor, respectively, and an engraved five-pointed crown over an "AF" monogram on the backstrap below the grip safety; the recipient has not been identified, but the crown pattern is suggestive of unknown nobility. The grips are checkered hardwood, with straw and niter blue finished small parts and a nickel finished magazine with a hardwood base.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine, with 60% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown and gray patina, scattered pitting on the barrel and receiver, and mild handling marks overall. The grips are very good, with a chip absent from the left side near the safety switch, and mild dings overall. The grips panels are numbered "47", 2 digits off from the primary serial number, the magazine base "814", and the takedown latch is unnumbered, otherwise visible numbers are matching. Mechanically excellent.

U.S. Test Trials DWM Model 1900 American Eagle Luger Pistol

Lot # 436 (Sale Order: 435 of 664)

Desirable DWM Model 1900 U.S. Army Test-Trials American Eagle Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is a solid representative example of a historic DWM Model 1900 American eagle test Luger that was purchased in August 1901 by the U.S. Ordnance Department for troop trials with the U.S. Cavalry. In April 1900 the Ordnance Board authorized an order for 1,000 DWM model 1900 Luger pistols, which were delivered in two separate lots. Approximately 800 were shipped 26 October 1901 (serial numbers approximately 6,100-7,100 range) and the remaining 200 shipped on Oct 29 1901 (serial numbers in the 7,200 range). This pistol falls well within the known U.S. "Test Eagle" serial number ranges. These early American eagle test Lugers were developed expressly for the U.S. military when they were interested in selecting a replacement pistol for Colt 1894 revolver chambered for the anemic .38 caliber. There were only a total of 1,000 of this model ever manufactured as standard 1900 commercial Lugers with all of them being hand selected at the DWM factory for shipment to the U.S. Army. These Lugers are highly sought after by both German Luger collectors and U.S. martial handgun collectors. The distinguishing features of these rare "Test/Trials" American eagle Lugers are: 1) there are no German acceptance proofmarks, 2) they lacked the typical Germany export markings usually found on the front of the frame or under the barrel, 3) some but not all had a small German ordnance proof that resembled the U.S. Ordnance bomb proof located either inside the front frame recess area, or in front of the recoil lug located on the underside of the barrel extension (this example has both), and/or on the bottom of the wooden magazine base (this magazine is not marked) and the last two digits of the serial number were stamped on the rounded portion of the opposite side of the takedown lever, (which this example has). At the conclusion of these tests all these Lugers were deemed inadequate for U.S. military use and they were all later sold to Bannermans for resale. The top of the chamber area is correctly marked with the "American Eagle" seal of the United States and are correctly serial numbered in the commercial fashion. They have the early grip safety, recessed breech bolt, dished toggles with toggle locks on the side, and were numbered with the full serial number located on the front of the frame and underside of the barrel with the last two digits of the serial number on the face of the recoil lug, take down lever, side plate, breech bolt, toggle assembly, side of the grip safety and the back side of both grip panels. Originally these pistols had a deep rust blue finish with the heat blue grip screws, front sight blade, and connecting pins. The ejector, toggle link, ejector, takedown lever, trigger, magazine release, and thumb safety lever have a straw color finish. It is fitted with walnut checkered grips and it has a nickel plated magazine body with an unmarked wooden base.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine with 50% of the faded original blue finish with the balance turning a gray/brown patina color, cold blue on left side of frame, with thinning on the front grip strap and left side of the frame. The grips are very good with nice distinct checkering showing honest wear across the tops of the checkering mixed with some handling marks/pressure dents on the sides, with a small chip on the left grip in the upper rear corner under the safety lever. This example has all matching numbers, except for the magazine which is correctly unnumbered. Mechanically excellent. Most likely, this example was one of the 1900 DWM test Luger pistols that was actually used by the various cavalry units.

Lot # 439 (Sale Order: 438 of 664)

Desirable Pre-World War I Imperial German DWM Model 1906 Unaltered First Issue Navy Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is a solid representative example of an Imperial German DWM Model 1906 First Issue, unaltered, Navy Luger pistol, one of approximately 8,000 of this model originally manufactured. These were the standard pre-World War I Navy Luger issued to the Imperial German Navy all the way through World War I and even into the Weimar era. This first issue Navy 1906 Luger has the desirable first variation safety markings with "GESICHERT" in the lower position. The majority of these first issue Navy Lugers had their safety markings modified, with this rare example being one of the very few that escaped this alteration and still retains its original safety marking in the lower position. The top of the chamber area is undated, with the standard "DWM" logo on the front toggle, 6 inch Navy barrel, two-position 100-200 meter Navy rear sight, grip safety, the underside of the barrel is marked with a "crown/M" Navy acceptance proof with a "crown" firing proof on the left, the left of the barrel extension has the "crown" firing proof followed by double "crown/M" Navy acceptance proof marks, and a "crown" proof is also located on the left of the breech block. Matching visible numbers besides the unnumbered (possibly replacement) checkered walnut grip panels, and a correct type Navy type magazine with nickel plated body and numbered "1709" next to a "crown/M" Navy stamp on the walnut base with concentric circles.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very fine, retains 85% original blue finish with areas of differing hues, some light edge wear and handling marks, and a few areas of smooth brown patina. 60% original straw colors on the small components. Grips are also very fine, with a few light handling marks and defined checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Mauser "K" Date "S/42" Code Luger Pistol with Holster

Lot # 442 (Sale Order: 441 of 664)

Mauser "K" Date "S/42" Code Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol with Holster

Manufactured in 1934, the highly desirable "K" date "S/42" code Lugers were part of the effort of the relatively fresh German government to start moving out from under the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty in preparation for their wars of aggression. While international will to enforce the treaty had been slipping for some time by this point, there was still concern of pushback, which led to the system of using letters in lieu of plain dates (a procedure that would be abandoned once it became clear that no one was going to raise a fuss) and the use of assigned codes in lieu of plain maker's marks (which would be the status quo through the end of the war). Being among the arms on tap for some of the earliest action of World War II in Europe, letter code firearms rarely went unissued, being on the belts and in the hands of the soldiers executing the earliest political and military occupations of Germany's neighbors, often being subjected to years of wartime wear and tear, sometimes outright destroyed by the harsh conditions of combat, making them rare in any condition. Fixed sights, with the "K" date on the chamber, "S/42" code on the front toggle link, "O][37" stamps on the extension and barrel, and "droop wing eagle" firing proofs on the barrel, extension and breech block. The underside of the barrel bears a "8,84" internal diameter stamp on the underside, and block "S" stamps are present on the sideplate, sear, takedown lever, front toggle, link and safety bar. Matching visible numbers are present overall in the traditional military pattern, including inside both grip panels, and fitted with a non-matching period replacement nickel finished alloy base magazine numbered "6680a" on bottom with a "B][90" stamp. Includes a reproduction black leather holster stamped with a drooped wing eagle above "LEDERWERKE/KARL ACKVA A.G./BAD KREUZNACH/1934" on the back.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Fine, retaining 60% original blue finish, showing areas of gray and brown patina, and light freckling. 50% original straw colors remain. The grips are very fine with a few small nicks in the otherwise crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The reproduction holster is very fine.

Desirable World War II German J.P. Sauer & Sohn M30 Luftwaffe Survival Drilling with Jagdgeschwader 3 Stock Inlays, Case and Accessories

This is a fine representative example of a desirable World War II J. P. Sauer and Sohn M30 German Luftwaffe survival drilling. The M30 drilling was issued to Luftwaffe air crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater from 1941-1943 to provide them with a high quality survival weapon in the event of a forced landing. They were considered to be the finest survival rifle ever issued by any military. They are a three-barreled combination gun; double barrel 12 gauge barrels over a 9.3X74R rifle barrel. The right side of the buttstock has a large inlaid aluminum plaque insignia of the Jagdgeschwader 3 "Udet", with a large inlaid aluminum plaque on the left of Group II. Fighter Wing 3 of the Luftwaffe was named after Ernst Udet, an instrumental figure in the development of the Luftwaffe. This squadron operated on all the German fronts of World War II in the European Theater. The bottom of the barrel lug has a single "stick Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark, and the underside of each barrel has the commercial "eagle/N" proofmarks along with the bore and gauge/caliber markings. These drilling have a Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever. Both sides of the receiver are marked with "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL" with a larger intertwined "SS" logo on the underside of the receiver. The top of the receiver tang has a sliding barrel selector catch. When engaged, the rifle barrel selector raises a folding, 100 meter rifle rear sight on the barrel rib and engages the forward trigger for firing the rifle barrel. The front trigger can be pushed forward to activate a "single set" trigger. High quality scroll engraving on the receiver, trigger guard, and engraved screw heads, with the forearm and pistol grip finely checkered. The shotgun has a blue barrel, casehardened receiver and trigger guard and oil finished, European walnut stock and forearm. The stock has small inlaid pearls on either side of the wrist, Luftwaffe inlays as mentioned above, European oval cheekpiece and a casehardened pistol grip cap with a black plastic serrated buttplate that has the intertwined "SS" logo of the Sauer & Sohn factory in the center. The drilling is packed in a black painted aluminum carrying case. The inside lid of the carrying case contains a black stenciled listing of the original contents of the case. The case is divided into compartments for the drilling, ammunition, and cleaning equipment. The case includes some cleaning tools and rods, and an open box of NORMA 9.3 X 72 mm R cartridges containing four cartridges. The lot includes some consignor supplied research.
