Attractive Engraved and Silver Accented Silas Allen Jr. New England Flintlock Rifle

Silas Allen Jr. (1785-1868) is one of the better known riflemakers in New England in the early 19th century. He apprenticed under John Mason (also represented in this auction). Silas started his own business in 1806 and had Martin Smith (represented in the previous lot) as his apprentice c. 1811-1812. In that period, Allen was also the captain of the South Company militia unit in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, c. 1810-1815. He and the other Worcester County gunmakers made firearms for the militia. Martin Smith Signed New England Flintlock American Long Rifle

Lot # 280 (Sale Order: 279 of 664)

Desirable Martin Smith Signed New England Flintlock American Long Rifle

Martin Smith Jr. appears to have been born in Shrewsbury in 1797 and became a well-known gunmaker in Greenfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, c. 1819-1836. He was an early adopter of the percussion system given his May 6, 1826, dated ad with "Percussion Rifles!!!" as the heading indicating he had rifles and fowling pieces available from as low as $9 dollars to over $100. He also ran advertisements seeking large quantities of cherry, curly maple, and brass for producing rifles in the early 1830s and sold the shop to W.C. Clements in 1836. This rifle features an octagon barrel with "M. SMITH" crisply stamped on top, eight-groove rifling, a fixed blade front sight, and a dovetailed notch rear sight. There are wavy silver wire inlays around the barrel tang, a feature noted on other rifles by Smith as well as by other gunmakers from his region such as Silas Allen Jr. under whom he apprenticed. The lock is marked "GOLCHER" and has some floral designs. The trigger is brass (another regional feature) and is enclosed in a brass trigger guard with a distinctive pointed finial that is the same design seen on other Worcester County rifles. The two-piece patchbox has a wavy line border and a deep cavity. The other brass furniture is plain. The stock is also fairly simple aside from the checkering on the wrist and shallow cheekrest.

Class: Antique

Very good as reconverted to flintlock configuration with mix of gray and brown patina and applied brown on the lock and barrel, some mild pitting, attractive aged patina on the brass, and general mild overall wear. The stock is fine and has a few minor cracks, distinct but lightly worn checkering, and scattered dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.

Lot # 281 (Sale Order: 280 of 664)

Ornate German Silver Inlaid and Engraved Huntingdon County Percussion Long Rifle

The signature on the barrel is mostly rubbed away, but the first letter looks like it could be a "J". This rifle has strong similarities with others identified as by Joseph Douglass (Sr. or Jr.). He used the same patchbox and side plate designs on multiple identified rifles and very similar inlays. See "Gunsmiths of Bedford, Fulton, Huntingdon, & Somerset Counties" by Whisker and Yantz for multiple examples as well as the rifle in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Accession Number: 56.164.4). The rifled barrel has circles around the muzzle face, a blade front sight, adjustable notch rear sight, floral engraving, and a peep sight fitted to the upper tang. The lock has floral engraving. The rifle is equipped with adjustable double set triggers and has a spurred trigger guard. The four-piece brass patchbox has piercings and very nice floral engraving. "A x B" Signed, Inlaid, and Engraved Percussion Pennsylvania Long Rifle

This rifle has similarities with rifles by Joseph Douglass Sr. or Jr. of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, especially the lower rifle on page 80 of "Gunsmiths of Bedford, Fulton, Huntingdon, & Somerset Counties" by Whisker and Yantz which has the same patchbox with heart pierced finial but different engraving and the same side plate as the rifle on the bottom of page 81. The rather heavy barrel is rifled, has blade and notch sights with engraved "chicken track" accents, and is signed "A x B" in a very similar fashion to the lock on the "Amos, Border & Co." attributed rifle on page 51. Exceptional Sterling Silver Mounted, Engraved, and Relief Carved Flintlock American Longrifle Dated 1959 and Documented as William Buchele's First Rifle

This rifle is accompanied by a framed photograph of William Buchele (1895-1977) working in his shop. On the back of the frame is adhered a copy of a letter from Buchele to Fred Beck dated July 7, 1975, in which he writes: "The silver mounted rifle with my name on it, and dated 1959 was the first rifle that I made. Buchele was active building an array of beautiful American longrifles up until shortly before his death in 1977 and also produced powder horns, tomahawks, and other related items. The installed 30 1/4 inch barrel includes a false muzzle and brass bullet starter and is equipped with a globe front sight, and the 24 1/4 inch octagonal barrel has a plain muzzle, a dovetailed blade front sight, and an adjustable sporting rear sight. The buttstock has a blued buttplate and toe plate with coordinating scroll engraving, nickel-silver patchbox with scroll engraving and a scene of a leaping buck on the lid, nickel-silver floral inlay on the cheekpiece, and checkering on the wrist. Included notes indicate the target barrel has a .371 bore with a 1:23 1/4 twist, while the hunting barrel has a slightly smaller .369 bore and a faster 1:21 twist. Within the modern custom case are a pair of Hoch bullet molds with a shared handle set, a Remington pattern powder flask with multiple spout options, the noted false muzzle and starter, an antique pair of shooting glasses, a martial pattern button, and an 1863 penny.

Class: Antique

Very good plus with 30% of the original blue finish concentrated on the left side of the frame and the forearm of the shorter barrel and otherwise smooth gray and brown patina, crisp engraving and markings, and minor overall wear. The stock is fine and has distinct checkering, a few small cracks and repairs, and minor marks and scratches. Mechanically fine. The custom case is fine.

Engraved J. & J. Miller Revolving Pill Lock Rifle

Lot # 296 (Sale Order: 295 of 664)

Exhibition Quality Panel Scene Engraved J. & J. Miller Revolving Pill Lock Rifle with Gold Fittings

Manufactured between 1835-1850, these Miller patent revolving rifles were commonly called Billinghurst rifles because William Billinghurst of Rochester, New York, was the most prolific and well-known maker of the rifles. At least 15 gunsmiths made revolving rifles under the Miller patent, and it is estimated that only a few hundred were made in total. With over a dozen known makers, surviving examples of revolving rifles using the Miller patent show a variety of variations including varying calibers, barrel lengths, barrel styles and number of cylinder chambers. Each is a unique glimpse into mid-19th century craftsmanship and design. This J.&J. Miller marked rifle follows the basic pattern of the Miller patent, operates with pill lock ignition and has the distinctive front latch on the cylinder. Very tiny pills containing the fulminate are retained in small receptacles in the cylinder by use of bees wax. The pill lock, or pellet lock, was originally patented by renowned London gunsmith Joseph Manton in the early 19th century. The seven shot cylinder is rotated manually by releasing the latch located in front of the cylinder on the bottom of the barrel lug. James Miller patented this system on June 11, 1829 under U.S. patent number 203 (the original patent record was lost in the fire of 1836). This is one of the earliest revolving firearm patents and pre-dates the automatic cocking and locking system that Colt patented in 1836. The manually operated cylinder is serrated for an easier grip. The top barrel flat is marked "J. & J. Miller Rochester" in Gothic lettering, the top of the breech ahead of the cylinder is non-factory numbered "1735" and the lock plate is marked "J. & J. MILLER". The lock plate is engraved with a panel scene of a dog running through grassland with trees and a fence ahead of a bordered section with a motif, and the rear frame section, trigger guard and buttplate feature fine floral engraved motifs and borders. The barrel is equipped with fixed sights and solid under rib carrying a hickory ramrod. The cylinder and barrel are brown, and the remaining surfaces appear to have been casehardened. Mounted with a highly figured straight grip stock featuring gold wrist and barrel wedge escutcheons, horn forend tip and steel buttplate.

Class: Antique

Very good, showing a mix of thinned original brown finish and smooth brown patina on the barrel and cylinder, a reattached split in the top strap with applied artificially aged brown finish, the remaining casehardened surfaces have a mixture of smooth brown and silvery gray patinas, with some scattered patches of light surface oxidation, some marred edges on a few screws, and the engravings and markings are mostly crisp. Refinished wood is good with some cracks, a few glued and nailed repairs visible above and below the lock, discoloration, and scattered light scratches and handling marks. Mechanically fine. A solid representative example of a rarely encountered highly embellished revolving rifle that will fill a gap in the most advanced antique American rifle collections.

Truman Lamson Percussion Match Rifle with Accessories

Lot # 297 (Sale Order: 296 of 664)

Documented Truman Lamson Percussion Match Rifle with Accessories

This rifle is featured on page 156 of Ned Robert's classic book "The Muzzleloading Caplock Rifle" where it is identified as a "T. Lamson, 54 calibre Match Rifle, 34-inch barrel, weight 17 1/2 pounds From Floyd R. Butler's Collection." The barrel length given in the book includes the breech plug. The rifle is cut and drilled for the included false muzzle and has a modern globe front sight, hole in the underside of the barrel for fitting a rest, filled taps from previous sight fittings, a tang mounted peep sight, adjustable single set trigger, scroll engraved trigger guard and buttplate, and a half-length stock with a pewter forend cap and shotgun profile. Includes a modern case with the false muzzle and starter along with a flask, powder measure, bullet mold, sizer, rods, and jag. The Burlington Free Press on July 31, 1875, stated: "Col. Truman Lamson, of Bennington, died in that village on Wednesday last, of consumption. He was eighty years old on the 10th of June last. From forty to fifty years ago he was the most distinguished shot in America, and was the originator of the present system of rifling guns, an invention which revolutionized the construction of that branch of fire arms..." Other obituaries made similar statements. The prior winter, "Scraps of an Old Man's Recollections of His Life" was published in several newspapers and indicated he had been unwell for decades but had previously traveled widely in the South and made a living as a marksman and had been an accomplished riflemaker.

Class: Antique

The re-oiled stock is fine and has mild scratches and dings, a thin crack between the breech and front of the lock, and a few bruises. Mechanically fine. The case and accessories are also fine with mild wear.

German Stock Reservoir Air Rifle by C. Stuckle of Laubach

Lot # 299 (Sale Order: 298 of 664)

German Stock Reservoir Breech Loading Air Rifle by C. Stuckle of Laubach

This breech loading German air rifle appears to be from the late 1700s or early 1800s and is signed with the maker name "C. Stuckle in Laubach" on the top barrel flat at the breech. No further information has been found on the maker. It features an octagon barrel that loads from the breech end with a rotating faucet breech mechanism with right side lever, and has the ability to switch between calibers by utilizing a removable iron smoothbore screw-in sleeve insert that measures at approximately .32 caliber/8 mm, and has a rifled outer section that measures at approximately .43 caliber/11 mm, dovetail mounted blade front sight and notch rear sight, walnut stock with a horn end cap, and a metal buttstock reservoir. "Wind guns" had several advantages over conventional firearms including that they were quieter, smokeless, quicker to reload, and relatively unaffected by rain. They also required less cleaning since they did not require corrosive black powder. Circular brass collection tag marked "R.D. BEEMAN/PRIVATE/COLLECTION/2915" hanging from the trigger guard. Absent ramrod.

Class: Other

Good, with scattered mild pitting on the iron surfaces, and bright golden patina on the brass. The period refinished walnut stock is also good with scattered insect holes, cracks, chips, scratches and reattached cracked sections above the lock. Mechanically fine, although the screw buttstock reservoir has a gap when tightened.

18th Century Relief Carved "Flintlock" Stock Reservoir Air Gun

Lot # 300 (Sale Order: 299 of 664)

18th Century Relief Carved European "Flintlock" Stock Reservoir Air Gun

Though this example offered looks like a flintlock long arm, it is actually a smoothbore muzzleloading air gun with a concealed detachable screw-off buttstock air reservoir, and a faux flintlock mechanism. Air guns of this style were used primarily for hunting. "Wind guns" had several advantages over conventional firearms including that they were quieter, smokeless, quicker to reload, and relatively unaffected by rain. They also required less cleaning since they did not require corrosive black powder like the flintlocks that this example is modeled after. Blade front sight, notch rear sight, lock with beveled edges and a goose neck cock. Fitted with a walnut stock with relief carved teardrop flats and brass fittings. No visible maker markings. Circular brass collection tag marked "R.D. BEEMAN/PRIVATE/COLLECTION/074" hanging from the trigger guard.

Class: Other
