300 BC Ancient Greece Illyria (Under Rome) Silver Drachm Ancient Grades vf

Lot # 6401 (Sale Order: 2977 of 3376)

300 BC Ancient Greece Illyria (Under Rome) Silver Drachm Ancient Grades vf. After Philip II of Macedon defeated Bardylis (358 BC), the Grabaei under Grabos II beca...moreme the strongest state in Illyria. Philip II killed 7,000 Illyrians in a great victory and annexed the territory up to Lake Ohrid. Next, Philip II reduced the Grabaei, and then went for the Ardiaei, defeated the Triballi (339 BC), and fought with Pleurias (337 BC). After that Alexander the Great had defeated Illyrian chieftain Clitus forces in 335 B.C. and Illyrian soldiers and tribal leaders participated in his conquest of Persia. After the death of Alexander, Illyrian tribes started to rise to become independent from Macedonian rule. Following that in 312 B.C king Glaucius expelled Greeks from Durres. During the second part of the 3rd century BC, a number of Illyrian tribes seem to have united to form a proto-state stretching from the central part of present-day Albania up to Neretva river in Herzegovina. The political entity was financed on piracy and ruled from 250 BC by the king Agron. He was succeeded by his wife Teuta, who assumed the regency for her stepson Pinnes following Agron's death in 231 BC. Queen Teuta was famous for having waged wars against the Romans.

*EXCLUSIVE* Hand Marked "Unc Peace Limited," x10 coin Covered End Roll! - Huge Vault Hoard (FC)

Lot # 6404 (Sale Order: 2979 of 3376)

*EXCLUSIVE* Hand Marked "Unc Peace Limited," x10 coin Covered End Roll! - Huge Vault Hoard (FC). Up for auction is a (10 coin roll marked “Unc Peace Limited” and ...morehaving two covered ends and weighing 270.3g), one roll amongst the 2700+ roll hoard which after seeing it can only be described as the Long Island Vault Hoard. Inside the vault are hundreds upon hundreds of dollar rolls. Some are 10 coin rolls some are 20, most are hand marked as to what’s inside and most have covered ends. We have opened about 20 of the rolls and have not found any that were mismarked. The vault at one point I believe had the rolls separated into three sections. The markings standard, premium, limited were marked on the sections. Additionally there was a small safe inside the vault marked “Reserve”. But when we first the saw the hoard, the sections were empty as was the small safe. It appeared that at some point the rolls were all put into canvas bank bags, which bags were all lying on the floor of the vault. The agreement with for the Consignee is that we wire on Friday their portion of the funds for any rolls paid that week and on Mondays we will send our runner up to Long Island to retrieve the rolls for shipment that week from our offices as well as photographing the rolls for the next weeks auction. We hope you enjoy these rolls as much as we have bringing them to you.

306-312 AD Ancient Rome, Maxentius Ancient Grades au details

Lot # 6413 (Sale Order: 2982 of 3376)

306-312 AD Ancient Rome, Maxentius Ancient Grades au details. Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius (c. 283 – 28 October 312) was a Roman emperor from 306 until his d...moreeath in 312. Despite ruling in Italy and North Africa, and having the recognition of the Senate in Rome, he was not recognized as a legitimate emperor by his fellow emperors. He was the son of former Emperor Maximian and the son-in-law of Emperor Galerius. The latter part of his reign was preoccupied with civil war, allying with Maximinus against Licinius and Constantine. The latter defeated him at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312, where Maxentius, with his army in flight, purportedly perished by drowning in the Tiber river.Maxentius was the last emperor to permanently reside in Rome. He attempted to embellish, restore and improve the ancient capital, carrying out important building works, including the Temple of the Divine Romulus (dedicated to his deceased son), the Basilica of Maxentius, which was completed by Constantine, the villa and the circus of Maxentius.

Military Payment Certificate (MPC) Series 611 $1 Fr. M875 Grades vf+

Lot # 6415 (Sale Order: 2983 of 3376)

Military Payment Certificate (MPC) Series 611 $1 Fr. M875 Grades vf+. Military payment certificates, or MPC, were a form of currency used to pay U.S. military per...moresonnel in certain foreign countries. They were used in one area or another from a few months after the end of World War II until a few months after the end of U.S. participation in the Vietnam War – from 1946 until 1973. MPC utilized layers of line lithography to create colorful banknotes that could be produced cheaply. Fifteen series of MPCs were created. However, only 13 series were issued. The remaining two were largely destroyed, although some examples remain. Among the 13 released series a total of 94 notes are recognized.

3rd Century AD Ancient Rome Britain, Barbarous Radiate Ancient Grades vf

Lot # 6437 (Sale Order: 2991 of 3376)

3rd Century AD Ancient Rome Britain, Barbarous Radiate Ancient Grades vf. Barbarous radiates are imitations of the antoninianus, a type of coin issued during the R...moreoman Empire, which are so named due to their crude style and prominent radiant crown worn by the emperor.Barbarous radiates were issued privately primarily during the Crisis of the Third Century (c. 259–274 AD) in the western provinces. They are not generally regarded as forgeries since they were rarely deceptive because they were smaller and cruder than standard issues. They probably functioned as small change.Although earlier numismatists, notably Philip V. Hill, theorized that barbarous radiates were produced long after their prototypes and into the Dark Ages and Saxon period, more recent works argue that they were generally contemporary to their prototypes.
