SIGNED Ten Great Religons by Famous ABOLITIONIST James Freeman Clark (1882)

Lot # 58

This was originally going to be listed as a religious book lot but then I noticed one book was signed. The Great Religions by James Freeman Clarke (1882) this is SIGNED. ...moreLooking up this man I see that he was ordained into the Unitarian church he first became an active minister at Louisville, Kentucky, then a slave state, and soon threw himself into the national movement for the abolition of slavery. ALSO suggested that Julia Ward How wrote new lyrics which became the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". HE ALSO edited the Western Messenger, a magazine intended to carry to readers in the Mississippi Valley simple statements of liberal religion and what were then the most radical appeals to national duty and the abolition of slavery. Copies of this magazine are now valued by collectors for containing the earliest printed poems of Ralph Waldo Emerson, a personal friend and a distant cousin.

The tissue guards are all in fair condition, and the prints are in good- condition with some wear. PLEASE NOTE - there is one difference between this book and others that range between $1000-$3000 - IN THIS BOOK HE SIGNED NINE OF THE LITHOGRAPHS! No other listing I have seen is that the case. I have not seen any that have them all signed (one of these is not). The limitation page is also signed as this is a limited edition to 1000. Condition as shown there is wear but the purchaser will have 9 SIGNED LITHOGRAPHS by Merida. "Carlos Mérida (December 2, 1891 – December 21, 1985) was a Guatemalan artist who was one of the first to fuse European modern painting to Latin American themes, especially those related to Guatemala and Mexico. He was part of the Mexican muralism movement in subject matter but less so in style, favoring a non-figurative and later geometric style rather than a figurative, narrative style. Mérida is best known for canvas and mural work, the latter including elements such as glass and ceramic mosaic on major constructions in the 1950s and 1960s. One of his major works, 4000m2 on the Benito Juarez housing complex, was completely destroyed with the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, but a monument to it exists at another complex in the south of the city."

Boreal Ties: Photographs and Two Diaries of the 1901 Peary Relief Expedition

Lot # 91

Very good condition, hardcover. "In 1899 Robert Peary, exploring northern Greenland in search of the North Pole, lost seven toes to frostbite but refused to cut his explo...moreration short to seek treatment. The 1901 expedition documented in this fascinating new book was organized to deliver supplies to Peary and to search for his wife and child. The book comprises the annotated diaries and photographs of two participants in the expedition, Clarence Wyckoff and Louis Bement, close friends from Ithaca, New York who paid $500 each to join the voyage."
