RARE The Story of Evangelina Cisneros (1898) Spanish IMPRISONMENT & ESCAPE!
PLEASE READ TILL END -> Good condition. Decorative gilt-stamped olive-green cloth boards. Some fading to spine, introduction by Julian Hawthorne (son of Nathanial], with illustrations by Frederic Remington and Thomas Fleming. Richmond, VA: B.F. Johnson Publishing, 1898. 266 pp. "Historically important example of yellow journalism that bore directly on the Spanish-American Conflict of 1898." The book collects Karl Decker's reportage on the Spanish imprisonment (and escape) of Evangelina Cisneros, a fair-skinned Cuban girl, for the New York Journal, the flagship newspaper of William Hearst's empire. Cisneros's case became an international cause celebre when prominent American women such as Julia Ward Howe and First Lady Mrs. William McKinley campaigned on Cisneros's behalf. Ultimately, Cisneros escaped with help from Decker and operatives hired by Hearst. ALSO -> Someone wrote that the previous owner of this book had something to do with the escape to Cuba (or back) I will let you read it and decipher what she wrote.
