Colt Single Action Army 45 Colt SN: 114810

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 873)

Early Vintage First Generation SAA 'Peacemaker' single action revolver manufactured circa 1885, shipped in 1886. Research of Colt records places this serial number to be in the middle of a range for revolvers delivered under a US Army contract (including Artillery and Cavalry length barreled guns). The cylinder and frame are stamped "DFC" (David F. Clark), which supports this being manufactured for an Army contract, subsequently sold as a commercial gun when the allotted contractual quantity of 2000 guns was met, making this a "contract overrun" revolver. Sub-Inspector marked "G" on trigger guard and backstrap. This revolver is blued, with hard rubber "Rampant Colt" logo grips, 4-3/4" barrel. Serial number repeated on grip straps. Cylinder is un-numbered. Barrel has two line address, no marking on left side, caliber marked on left side of trigger guard. Bore is about very good, bright with strong rifling, some light pitting near muzzle. Charge holes appear smooth with some darkness. Retains approx 20% finish with traces of bluing in protected areas, most metal showing a brownish gray color with bare metal on edges and high spots. Screw heads show marring to slots, several show bright niter blue color. Traces of case color in corners of frame and on sides of hammer, otherwise light gray or brown color. Grips are good to very good with very little smoothing of features, likely later replacements. Inside of grip panels shows scratched-in different serial number on both panels. Action is smooth with tight lock up, although the hammer notches are damaged and the hammer does not stay on full cock. No half cock notch remaining. Included letters from Colt and from John Kopec. The Colt letter verifies this exact configuration left the factory and was shipped to J.F. Schmelzer & Sons Arms Co in Kansas City MO on Jan 26, 1886. The Kopec letter details Army contract guns being documented with serial numbers one or two digits off in both directions. Condition is NRA Very Good (mechanical issues) *** Antique Firearm ***

Colt Single Action Army 45 Colt SN: 116517

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 19 of 873)

Early Vintage First Generation SAA 'Artillery Model' single action revolver manufactured circa 1885, shipped to the United States Government on December 3rd, 1885. The Colt factory letter does not specify barrel length. Other identified US Martial revolvers with serial numbers close to the number on this frame are 7-1/2" cavalry revolvers. This example appears to have been shortened from a longer length to 5-1/2", with the front sight relocated. Approx 16,000 cavalry length guns were shortened in this fashion circa 1893, without any attention to numbering on the various parts such as triggerguard or backstrap. This revolver features 5-1/2" barrel, smooth walnut one piece grip, blued finish. Markings include: "US" on left side of frame, "DFC" on bottom of frame, partial "DFC" and "P" on cylinder, "K" on triggerguard, partial "A" on backstrap. Numbers do not match, with partial "(zero?)95" on cylinder, "14009" on triggerguard, "7 53" on back strap, "2805" on barrel. Bore is lightly frosted with some scattered tiny pits, generally bright overall with good rifling. Charge holes are dark with very little roughness. Metal surfaces are silvery gray, some darker color in cylinder flutes and other protected areas. Case colors on frame are present, faint, show mottled light and medium grays. Many areas show heavy buffing, with some smoothing of sharp edges. Some screw heads show marring to slots, many screw holes show dishing from polishing. Grips are good condition, smooth, very little shrinkage, good fit to frame. Barrel address is very faint and unreadable. Patent dates are partially eroded. Action is smooth with good lock-up, all four "clicks" are present when cocking the hammer. Included letters from Colt and from John Kopec. The Colt letter verifies this serial number frame as being a US military revolver. The Kopec letter details specifics of condition and status, with some guesses at possible history of the various parts used to assemble this as an 'Artillery Model'. Condition is near NRA Very Good as reworked *** Antique Firearm ***
