Left stock bolt, lower tang & t...morehree bands all numbered "28". Other markings are illegible due to oxidation & pitting. Lock is very stiff when hand cycled. Beech stock w/ three bands & bottom mounted sling swivels. Iron ramrod present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: triangular blade socket bayonet that measures 22" overall w/ 19" blade. Bayonet is an overall dull brown oxidized patina. CONDITION: stock shows notable long cracks on both sides of wrist, scattered other cracks, chipping, dings & handling wear. Metal is a gray patina w/ overall oxidation, scattered pitting & some dings. Oxidized bore. (01-24446/MJC). ANTIQUE. $300-500.

Rear of lock, upper tang & left s...moretock flat have "US" markings that are possibly post-service enhancements. Rear of bbl. marked w/ "V", "M" & "(Crown)/K" proofs. Touch hole is unusually small & the gun may be a reconversion to flint. Lock is functional when hand cycled. Hardwood stock w/ left side saddle bar & ring. Ramrod present. CONDITION: stock set appears lightly sanded long ago w/ a couple small cracks, scattered dings & handling marks. Metal is turning to a gray patina w/ some light chipping on bbl. band, scattered pitting & oxidation. Bore shows some scattered oxidation & pitting. (01-24462/MJC). ANTIQUE. $300-400.

MUSKET. Cal. 71. NSN. The 42 1/2" barrel is stamped with unreadable cartouche on top flat of octagonal breech section. Barrel transitions to round with sixteen sides in f...moreront of rear band and short wedding ring. Barrel attaches to stock with three spring retained bands. Early style lock with deeply arched rounded plate is unmarked and features serpentine cock, inset rounded pan, unbridled friction frizzen and feather spring with large spear finial. European walnut stock has very deep handrail comb and is iron mounted. Buttplate is early type long shaped finial. Trigger guard also has shaped finials. Left side of butt is carved with the initials "BC", no other marks are present. CONDITION: good. Metal parts cleaned to fairly bright pewter gray over some light pitting. Stock is basically sound with a repaired crack at front of lock which runs up to barrel channel. Bore is pitted. Lock is good. (01-24445/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.

CONDITION: stock has older added finish w/ some chipping in ramrod channel, scattered handling wear & dings. Metal appears cleaned long ago w/ scattered oxidation & light pitting. Sight slide has added notch to give additional elevation in the lowest position. Stud type front sight. Lock is marked with crown over "1869" / "ENFIELD" / "2". Marked at tail crown over "VR". Barrel retained by 2 clamping bands. Correct type ramrod with recessed head. Walnut stock with brass furniture is marked on the left panel "JW" and 2 crown over "A" acceptance marks under grip. Unmarked buttplate. Sling swivels are present. CONDITION: stock has been refinished leaving visible markings but has slight loss of wood in inletted areas. Notable small crack at rear of lockplate. Barrel retains most of its original blue. Finish on top of breech block does not generally match barrel. Lockplate has cleaned appearance with spots of light oxidation. Brass parts have pleasing worn patina. Rear trigger guard screw appears to be brass replacement. Barrel bands have glossy blue finish. Bayonet lug shows file marks. Shiny bore with scattered pitting and lightly worn lands. (01-24501/RW). ANTIQUE. $600-900.

Modified for saber bayonet wi...moreth added lug and shortening forestock and cutting front band. This alteration was performed at Harpers Ferry 1855-1857. Model 1855 rear sight also added. CONDITION: original and complete other than missing front sling swivel, good to very good overall, matching 1851 dated barrel, discernible inspection marks on barrel but not discernible in wood, mechanics are fine, good crisp bore. Accompanying unmarked saber bayonet fits well, brass mounted sheath is about 1/2" short. (01-24551/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,500.

Walnut stock has boxed script inspector's mark. 3 Flat bands retained by springs. Middle band does not have provision for swivel. Swivel is present in trigger bow. Ramrod with swell has been repaired by welding. Buttplate marked "US". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 14 1/2" triangular Enfield bayonet which has been shortened. Markings on face of blade include "S". Leather scabbard marked "O" at throat and "4899" S#. Round metal tip. Bayonet has wear turning gray and patina. Leather scabbard with retaining strap has wear and flexing but appears serviceable. CONDITION: original finish stock has moderate wear and handling marks with staining. Notable missing chip on left of Breech plug tang. Approximately 3/4" crack behind tail of lockplate. Metal has been cleaned but is returning to a gray patinaed appearance with wear and light oxidation. Bore has visible rifling turning dark with scattered pitting throughout. (01-24550/RW). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,500.

U.S. CIVIL WAR SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1863 RIFLE

MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 40". Dated on top rear 1864 and on top left flat "VP" eagle proof. Records indicate that 255,040 of these rifles were mfg. by Springfield Armor...morey and none by outside contractors. The changes from the 1861 Springfield include a different form of hammer with beveled edge. The clean out screw is eliminated from the cone seat and the ramrod manufactured without the "Swell". The 1863 was further modified to a model known as the Type II which returned to the 3 solid bands retained by band springs as used in this example. Forend does not have ramrod retaining spring. Single leaf folding rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Stud type front sight with center aperture. Lockplate is marked with eagle "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Lock is dated "1864" at tail. Comb seat has spread winged eagle. Unmarked walnut stock has only an "A" "bored soldier" marking underneath forend. Buttplate is marked "US". Replacement tulip head ramrod. CONDITION: stock has worn original finish with numerous dents and scratches. Notable spots of white paint on left side of butt and deep scratch on both sides of forend behind upper band. Metal has turned overall gray and patina with oxidation and areas of fine pitting. Notable pitting at heel of buttplate. Bore has strong rifling with scattered pitting throughout, plus notable oxidation and wear at muzzle. (01-24449/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.

The top of the bbl. is marked with a...more mostly illegible "CAST-STEEL 1862" stamp, with Burnside's information partially legible on the lockplate. Plain wood straight grip buttstock and forend have been sanded and revarnished, seemingly during the period. Blade front sight with V-notch rear sight. Exterior of metal and wood components exhibit a layer of lacquer. CONDITION: metal components exhibit dark gray and brown patinas, with mild to moderate pitting overall. Dark bore, exhibiting pitting and good rifling throughout. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and impressions overall, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. Lacquer exhibits areas of flaking overall. (01-24503/MLW). ANTIQUE. $600-900.

Lockplate has eagle "U.S. WATERTOWN" and dated "1863" at tail. Replacement ramrod. Unmarked walnut stock with 3 clamping bands plus"U.S." marked buttplate. Barrel has no visible rifling. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 18" triangular blade Model 1855/70 socket bayonet marked "US" at top face of blade. Bayonet turning gray and patina with traces of blue. CONDITION: stock has worn original finish with numerous handling marks and spots of missing finish while retaining a good appearance. Bright metal is turning gray and patina with areas of oxidation and light pitting most notable in breech area. Dark oxidized bore. Swivel bows are not present. (01-24508/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.

CONDITION: stock has well worn vintage arsenal rework type finish with wear and handling marks throughout. Notable loss of wood at toe. Wrist has extensive repair crack on both sides. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 18" triangular blade Model 1855/70 socket bayonet. Bayonet is marked on face with "US" and "S" underneath. Bayonet has oxidation and wear turning gray and patina. CONDITION: stock has been refinished with notable loss of wood showing wear and handling marks. Metal has been given additional blue finish over wear, handling marks and extensive fine pitting. CIRCA 1833 AMERICAN MILITIA MUSKET.

Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 39 1/4". This musket is typical of the plethora of militia muskets produced by town or county gunsmiths throughout the United States. Round barrel with...more faceted sides featuring a rectangular bayonet lug/sight 1 1/2" back from the muzzle. The breech is stamped “P M (proof) 1833”. The lock has an unreinforced cock with engraved foliate decoration on, in front of, and behind the cock. Brass trigger guard, buttplate, oval wrist escutcheon, side plate stamped “N. FRENCH”, entry thimble, barrel thimbles, and nosecap. The wooden ramrod has a brass tip and is possibly original to the gun. Walnut stock with checkering embellishments at the wrist. CONDITION: barrel has a dark gray/brown patina, as does the lock. Brass has a very attractive mellow mustard patina. The entry thimble has a period repair. There are minor losses at the toe of the stock and along the barrel channel. Fair bore. (01-24689/BF). ANTIQUE. $500-1,000.

Walnut stock w/ three bands & bottom mounted sling swivels. Trumpet head ramrod present. Left stock flat has faint US inspector's cartouche. Left side of butt has stamped large letters "JP". Right side of butt has some faint carvings including a letter "J" UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: US marked socket bayonet that has an overall length of 21" w/ 18" blade. Bayonet lacks a locking ring & is turning gray w/ scattered oxidation. CONDITION: stock set has added finish w/ a 2" crack ahead of lock, a small crack around rear stock bolt, some chips in cleaning rod channel, scattered dings & handling wear from the years. Hammer & lock are mostly a gray patina w/ scattered oxidation. Balance of metal remains partially bright w/ areas turning gray, some wrench marks at rear of bbl., scattered oxidation, pitting & light dings. FLINTLOCK MUSKET. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 42". Barrel is marked on top left with eagle head "VP" proof. The musket was given the Belgian type conversion to percussion ignition...more which was the method used at the National Armories. Walnut stock is marked on left panel with what appears to be script "JN" indicating John Newbury an inspector who worked at Springfield Armory during this period. Marked behind trigger guard tang with an "S" in an oval which would be correct for John Stebbins, who also worked at Springfield Armory in this time period. Marked "419" ahead of buttplate tang. Lockplate has correct brass filler piece. Marked in front of hammer with eagle over "US" and marked vertically at the tail with "SPRING / FIELD" and dated "1820". Barrel has 3 bands retained by springs including double strap upper band which carries the brass blade front sight. Muzzle is equipped with stud on top for bayonet. Button head ramrod appears to be original. Sling swivels are carried on middle band and a stud on front of the one-piece trigger guard. Buttplate marked "US" at heel. CONDITION: musket has attractive original "attic find" patinaed finish with the wear, staining and handling marks commensurate with age and extensive service. Small crack between left rear of barrel and lock screw. Lock has extremely weak mainspring. Bore has dark lightly oxidized appearance. (01-24513/RW). ANTIQUE. $300-600.

CIVIL WAR RELIC MUSKET, BELT KNIFE, CORPS BADGE, &

TIN TYPE. This lot includes a relic Civil War 58 Cal. musket. No markings are visible on the musket because of rust, and the hammer is missing. The ramrod is frozen in a ...morepartially deployed position. The wood is dry & slightly rotted in places. This musket comes complete w/ an appropriate bayonet. It is quite likely they were found together on or near a battlefield many years after the war. This lot further includes a small Cloverleaf Corps Badge w/ a keystone in the center featuring the number “53”. There is a silver suspension bar that reads “PA. VOLS.”. It is likely this is a Reunion Corps Badge from the post-war period. A small, raw tin type w/ a chest-up view of an enlisted Yankee wearing a greatcoat. Image measures 2” x 1 11/16”. A belt knife measuring 14 1/2” overall w/ an 8 3/4" blade. AMES SPRINGFIELD” on one side & “UNITED STATES 1841 WS” on the other. Solid brass hilt with eagle-impressed pommel & fish scale grip featuring 3 iron rivets. Leather scabbard with brass mounts. White buff leather sword belt with a US M1839 pattern enlisted artillery plate. CONDITION: blade has areas of original factory with some minor staining. Hilt has a pleasing mustard patina, as does do the scabbard mounts. Scabbard shows some minor flexing but remains solid. Belt has darkened with age and is a bit dry. The blade is etched over 19...more 1/2" w/ various patriotic & foliate motifs, including a large “U.S.”. There is an etched mark near the ricasso that reads “H. Sauerbier Newark N.J.”. Brass, semi-basket guard w/ cutout spread-wing eagle over “US” w/ a ribbon above that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Oak leaf & acorn decorated pommel. Triple wire-wrapped leather grip. Iron scabbard w/ heavily embellished drag. Suspension loops have a federal shield motif on one w/ a skull & crossbones on the other. Brass throat. CONDITION: blade shows some original factory polish w/ a few scattered spots of staining. Hilt is a bit loose w/ a dark overall patina. Leather & wire appear complete w/ minimal wear. The blade is etched over the first 16 ...more1/2" w/ various military, patriotic, & foliate devices. The ricasso has an etched mark that reads “H. Sauerbier Newark N.J.”. Gilded brass hilt w/ shield & acanthus leaves on the top of the fancifully scrolled, 2-branch guard. Knuckle bow is embellished as it nears the pommel cap. Pommel has an oak leaf design w/ a serrated edge to the cap. Wire-wrapped leather grip. Gilded brass mounted, browned iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has an overall medium gray, lightly mottled patina. Hilt retains only traces of original gilding. Grip shows wear to the leather, w/ the twisted wire nearly complete and the single strand wire 10% intact. Scabbard is quite solid w/ a pleasing patina. Mounting loops are decorated w/ an eagle & spray of arms. No notable gilding remains. (02-21183/BF). $1,200-1,800.

Iron scabbard w/ browned finish. CONDITION: blade has a cleaned, light gray patina & shows heavy use w/ wear to the etching. Hilt retains no trace of original gilding. Sharkskin shows wear but is complete. Wire is 100%. Scabbard finish is mixed between brown & oxidized areas. (02-21175/BF). $700-1,000.

CONDITION: blade has a light gray finish w/ very light staining. Hilt is undamaged & quite tight. Grip & leather are 100% but do show some wear. Knot is complete, showing light to moderate wear. Scabbard has one tiny shallow dent & an overall dark patina. (02-21236/BF). $800-1,200.
