2 US MUSKET LOCKS.

Lot # 3346 (Sale Order: 351 of 487)      

1) M1816. This lock is a reconversion of an M1816 lock with a poorly fitting brass pan. The “SPRINGFIELD 1818” markings at the back of the lock are incorrect, as an “I” s...moretamp was used in place of the “1” stamp in the date “1818”. There is a small “US” marking at the base beneath the rear of the pan. The inside of the lock has several arsenal stampings, including “AW”, “P”, “M”, and more. CONDITION: lock appears to function well and has a medium gray overall patina. 2) M1816. This lock is a drum conversion of an M1816 lock by M.T. Wickham. The rear of the lock is marked “PHILA 1834”, and the markings in front of the hammer read “US & M.T. WICKHAM” in an arc. CONDITION: the lock does not function and has a dark overall patina. The hammer has a lightly cleaned patina, and the drum is loose with a gray patina. (02-22469/BF). $200-300.

Cutler....more” / 1 Walking stick measuring 35 1/4" with a black wooden shaft and a 1 1/2" plated brass tip. The gold-plated T handle is engraved “John Hackett 1881.” / 1 Modern cane measuring 38” with a wooden shaft and a 1” brass tip with a tube cover. The handle is a cast brass cobra head. / 1 Modern cane measuring 32 1/2" with a wooden shaft and no tip. The handle is a cast white metal with a ribbed design. / 1 Italian M1891 Carcano bayonet measuring 17” overall with a blued blade and a brass-mounted leather scabbard featuring a frog stud attached by a screw. 5 ENGLISH & EUROPEAN SWORDS & SABERS.

Lot # 3357 (Sale Order: 362 of 487)      

1) BRITISH. Overall length: 40 1/2". Blade length: 32 1/4". This sword dates to the reign of Edward VII between 1901 and 1910. The blade has a single wide fuller 11” long...more. The blade is etched over the first 15” with various foliate & scroll motifs, including a crowned royal arm and a crowned “ER VII.” Polished steel hilt with pierced basket guard incorporating a pierced crowned “ER VII” in the knuckle bow. The backstrap is crosshatched, and the grip is wire-wrapped sharkskin. Plated iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade appears to retain some original factory polish but is quite dirty. Hilt has a medium gray patina mixed with the original surface. Grip is better than 90%, and the wire is complete. Scabbard is undamaged but does have some loss of plating. 2) BRITISH. Overall length: 39". Blade length: 32 1/2". This sword dates to the reign of George VI between 1936 and 1952. The blade has a single wide fuller 11” long. The blade is etched over the first 19” with various foliate & scroll motifs, including a crowned royal arm and crowned “GR VI.” The ricasso is marked “W.J. WATERER SWORD MAKER LONDON.” The hilt is polished steel with a pierced basket guard incorporating a crowned “GR VI” in the knuckle bow. The backstrap is crosshatched, and the grip is wire-wrapped sharkskin. Red leather-covered wooden scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a dark gray patina with some light staining. Hilt has a dark patina overall. Grip is 98% complete. The wire is 100%. The leather covering of the scabbard has shrunk a bit, and the attachment thong near the throat is broken. 3) BRITISH. Overall length: 42”. Blade length: 35 1/2”. A British P1822 dragoon saber having a blade with a single wide fuller and unmarked ricasso. Iron semi-basket guard with 2 branches to the front and 1 small branch to the rear, showing a downturned quillon. The top of the guard is marked “H 38.” Slightly stepped pommel with an eared backstrap. Leather grip. The iron scabbard is stamped “4 D G D 49” near the throat. CONDITION: blade has a light to medium gray patina with traces of pitting, particularly near the tip. The hilt has a medium gray/brown patina. Grip leather is dry but present, and no wire remains. Scabbard has a few minor shallow dents. 4) AUSTRIAN. Overall length: 38”. Blade length: 31 5/8”. The blade has a single wide fuller and is stamped at the ricasso “CARL GRASSER HOF WAFFENFABRIK WIEN” on one side and is stamped with four proof marks and a large “P” on the other. The hilt is plated with a 1 1/4" drop quillon below two slots. Plain knuckle bow & backstrap. Wire-wrapped sharkskin grip. Plated iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade shows original factory polish but appears to have been sharpened. Hilt shows light wear. Scabbard shows moderate wear. 5) EUROPEAN. Overall length: 43”. Blade length: 35 1/2". Plain pipe-back blade. Sheet iron hilt with a teardrop opening in the knuckle bow and a small rectangular slot at the front of the guard. The top of the backstrap is crosshatched, and a flat on the backstrap is stamped "L2067." 1-Piece wood grip. The iron scabbard is stamped at the throat “G7718.” CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina. Hilt has a very dark patina. Grip is complete. Scabbard also has a dark patina with a notable dent near the drag. (02-21831/BF). $1,100-1,500.

1) BRITISH. Overall length: 39 1/4". Blade length: 32 3/8”. The blade has a single 12 1/2" medium fuller in the center. The blade is marked near the hilt “(crown) 49 W” ...morewith two armorer’s marks on one side and “(crown) 49 W (crown) 49 W 10 ’01 WILKINSON LONDON” on the other. Sheet iron basket guard with knot decoration & piercings. The knuckle bow has a pierced crowned "VR." Wire-wrapped sharkskin grip. No scabbard. The sword is housed in a modern American leather sword carrier. CONDITION: blade has an overall dark patina, as does the hilt. The grip shows light wear overall. 2) BRITISH. Overall length: 43". Blade length: 35 3/4”. Plain, pipe-back blade lightly etched over about 6” with a crowned “GR IV" and a lower panel etched “PROSSER Sword Cutler to the KING.” Sheet iron basket guard with knot and foliate, pierced decoration throughout. Wire-wrapped sharkskin grip. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with a single notable nick. The tip of the blade has visible pitting. Hilt has an overall dark patina. Grip shows light wear, and the wire is complete. Scabbard has a dark, mottled patina. 3) BRITISH. Overall length: 41”. Blade length: 34”. This British P1822 dragoon saber has a blade with a single wide fuller and unmarked ricasso. Iron semi-basket guard with 2 branches to the front and 2 small branches to the rear. The downturned quillon is stamped “E695” on one side and “AE” on the other. Slightly stepped pommel with an eared backstrap. Wire-wrapped sharkskin grip. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray, matte finish. Hilt has a medium gray, mottled patina. Grip is complete but dry. Scabbard has been painted black. 4) FRENCH/BELGIAN. Overall length: 38 1/2". Blade length: 31 1/2". An interesting example of a French/Belgian M1850 officer’s sword that is known to have been utilized by both sides during the American Civil War. The blade has a single medium fuller with a secondary fuller near the spine. The ricasso is boldly stamped “FONSON & CIE FABRICANTS BRUXELLES.” Plated brass hilt featuring a 3-branch, semi-basket guard. Simple bird's-head pommel with wire-wrapped wood grip. Plated brass-mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray, mottled patina. Hilt is a bit misshaped and has 50% finish remaining. Grip is complete. Wire is about 70%. Scabbard shows flexing to the body, and the mounts show moderate wear 5) GERMAN. Overall length: 37”. Blade length: 31 1/2". A pre-WWI Imperial German officer’s saber featuring a pipe-back blade of Damascus steel. The blade is etched over 6” of its length with various geometric motifs, including a small panel on one side that reads “DAMAST-STAHL” on one side and “EISENHAUER” on the other. The etching has gold highlights in the background. The ricasso is stamped “(king’s head) (knight’s head) W.K & C.” a plated iron guard with two slots near the tubular quillon. Plain, slightly reversed P knuckle bow. Plain backstrap with a bird's-head pommel. Wire-wrapped sharkskin grip. The sword has a period blue and bullion knot attached. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray, mottled patina. Hilt has a general dark patina with some original plating remaining. Knot shows moderate wear with losses to the top of the acorn. (02-21841/BF). $1,200-1,600.

Gilded brass hilt with “CS” in the semi-basket guard. Wire-wrapped leather grip. Gilded brass mounted iron/steel scabbard. CONDITION: blade has original factory polish. Hilt is solid. Grip is complete, but wire is dislodged. Scabbard shows light wear overall with a few areas of verdigris. 3) BRITISH. Overall length: 40 3/4". Blade length 35”. Plain blade with a single medium fuller. The ricasso is marked “GORDON MITCHELL & CO LONDON” in a circle. Gold washed iron hilt with wire-wrapped faux sharkskin grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade appears to have been painted silver at one time, and the hilt appears to have been painted gold. Grip & wire are complete. (02-19611-1/BF). $200-300.
