Sioux Hair Pipe Bone Chief's Breast Plate 19th C.

Lot # 11 (Sale Order: 11 of 838)

This is an outstanding, authentic, bone hair pipe breast plate with mirror dating to the 19th Century from the Sioux Native American Indians of the Northern Plains. The p...moreiece shows fifty-four bone hairpipe (hair pipe) long early beads with a natural bone to slight yellow color from honest patina. The piece is constructed with four thick sections of harness saddle trade leather tied together with Indian tanned hide ties, further accented by solid brass round early trade beads and wound glass padre greasy blue early trade beads. The Indian tanned hide ties show a fringe at the outside edge of each harness leather strip; the fringe has a yellow mineral pigment ocher coloring and the hide itself is slightly stiffening from honest age. At the center of the breast plate is a round signal mirror set in a thin metal with rust patina. At the base of the breast plate (breastplate) is an Indian tanned hide, low hanging row of solid brass early trade beads and early glass trade beads. The top of the breast plate shows the original neck strap tie of Indian tanned hide with upside down “V” comprised of two bone hair pipe beads, each having the tie at the top with various early glass and early brass trade beads. Down the center of the breast plate are two long, thick harness saddle trade leather strips with rows of three early solid brass trade beads running down the entire center. Dec. 29th, 1890 / E195 Sioux-Hunkpapa sold by Cowan’s Auctions in 2019 for $10,880 (shown with BP); the example shows the same brass trade bead section down the center with horizontal hare pipe bone beads, fringe at the outside of the harness leather, low hanging brass bead rows, and a round trade signal mirror at the center. Also very similar to the Sioux Chief’s Breast Plate 19th Century sold by our company in 2017 for $3,600 (shown with BP); this example also shows the hair pipe bones running horizontally, brass trade beads down the center, brass trade beads along the neck piece, and a round trade signal mirror at the center. Northern Plains Quilled Elk Antler Quirt c. 1850-

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 19 of 838)

This is a phenomenal quillwork hide, harness leather, and Elk Antler riding quirt from the Northern Plains Native American Indians dating to circa 1850-1870's. The piece ...moreshows a large Rocky Mountain Elk Antler, which has been expertly carved into a squared off design tapering with the curvature of the antler and etched with cut "kill" marks down each edge, running down the entire length of the antler. At the larger end is a wooden dowel pin, which holds the harness saddle leather quirt whip-like end. which has a rich, dark chocolate coloring and shiny finish. The leather is wrapped in red stroud wool trade cloth, which is held in place with a wrapping of Indian tanned hide that also has a nice coloring from age. The pointed end of the antler shows a single drilled hole, which has an Indian tanned hide tie holding the fully quillwork geometric pattern wrist throng drop. The quillwork is all porcupine quills wrapped over a parfleche hide cuff in natural cream white, with the black being horse tail hair, a very early quillwork feature. The inside of the cuff is lined with a black trade cloth, which is sewn on with trade thread. The end of the antler is ground flat, showing rough striations indicative of early work. This is truly a fantastic early example. The quillwork shows some loss, the ties have slightly worn, and the hide is stiff. The antler has excellent coloring with a darkening and slight yellow from early age. Provenance: From an outstanding museum collection from Eastern Montana, where the piece was found to be an authentic original example. Measures 40.75"L with the leather.
