Navajo Sterling Squash Blossom Necklace Sandoval

Featured in this lot is this sterling silver squash blossom necklace from Navajo artist Sherry Sandoval. The squash blossom necklace features wonderfully and professionally crafted sterling silver construction sporting a double strand necklace chain with silver beads shown throughout and shows 12 total sterling silver blossoms and a central naga pendant with half of the silver beads mounted to the pendant. The artist hallmark can be seen on the backside of the naga pendant with a 'sterling' stamp on the underside of the hallmark. The condition of this neckalce is good with no obvious signs of damage and in good overall condition. The measurements of this necklace from clasp to clasp are 20 1/2" and the naga pendant measures 2 1/4" x 2 1/2" x 1/2". The collective weight of this necklace is 86.1g.

Outstanding Navajo Kachina Large Bolo by H. Boyd

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 758)      

This is an exceptional large Kachina sterling silver bolo tie set with turquoise from master silversmith Harold Boyd. The piece is likely Navajo Harold Boyd's finest work of silversmithing art which shows a very large Kachina dancer pattern having a spanning feathered headdress, horned kachina dancer with turquoise set crown, round shield like pattern below the head and an articulated bow and three piece circular piece. The kachina bolo tie is signed on the back "H BOYD" and "Sterling" stamped into the piece as well as "Harold Boyd" written on the back as well. The piece shows three polished cabochans of gem quality turquoise set in sterling silver above the kachina dancer's head from the Bisbee Turquoise Mine. The bolo is on a thick large black leather strand which is beauitfully braided with a nice smooth and comfortable back leather neck and on the end two large sterling silver tips. The tips have a discoidal sterling concho end with tapering rolled sterling long tips having a stamped finish. One of if not the best bolo tie we have offered for sale and is truly a wearable work of art. The piece carried a retail price of over $4,000. The bolo itself measures 4 1/8" by 4 1/8" by 1.25"D. The bolo strand is 44"L from tip around to tip and hangs 22"L when laid flat from the back of the neck to the end of both tips together. The tips are 2.25"L. Total weight of 172 grams.

The lot features a Navajo Tommy and Rose Singer sterling silver and 14K gold overlay, multi-stone Royston and Lone Mountain Turquoise necklace. Tommy Singer was a renowne...mored Navajo silversmith who grew up on the Navajo Reservation and was taught silversmithing by his father beginning at the age of seven. Singer is thought to be one of the most important and greatest contemporary silversmith Indian artists and his work is highly sought after. Singer passed away on May 31, 2014. After his death, his wife, Rose, continued to create jewelry using designs Singer created prior to his passing. The necklace features two large cylinder barrel in Tommy Singer pattern crafted of sterling silver and 14K yellow gold overlay along with four more cylinder barrel beads of sterling silver. The piece has a graduated pattern with polished discoidal turquoise spaced with purple spiny oyster heishi beads along with tigers eye, denim lapis lazuli, sugilite, charoite, agate, spiny oyster, jet, and a coral / red spiny oyster or pipestone catlinite. The large barrel beads are stamped / signed “T&R SINGER” (T & R Singer) as well as signed on the clasp “STERLING”. The condition of this necklace is good. The measurement of this necklace from clasp to clasp is 21.5". The collective weight of this necklace is 96.6g.

Navajo Sterling Buckle & Deer Lodge Horsehair Belt

The lot features a fantastic, original, handmade piece that shows a Navajo sterling silver and turquoise ranger buckle set with a tooled leather and Montana State Deer Lodger Prison hitched horsehair belt, dating to circa 1970-1980's. The buckle set is a nice large size and is all sterling silver with a wonderful old pawn stamped, tooled styling set with two Bisbee turquoise cabochon stones. The set is comprised of a large buckle, two slides, and the end tip. The end tip is stamped "Sterling". The hat band is adjustable; it is a custom tooled leather, basket weaver pattern with hitched horsehair (horsehair) handmade by an inmate at Deer Lodge Montana State Prison. Overall, the piece shows very good condition, displaying a nice patina on the sterling silver and little to no fraying to the horsehair. Prison horsehair hitching is immensely detailed and takes hundreds of hours to craft; each strand is typically hand dyed, yielding a truly amazing work of art. The hat band measures 33.25" long when the buckle was undone, and the hatband is laid out flat (from end of buckle to end of tip). The buckle itself is 2 1/8" x 2". The piece is approximately 1 1/8" at its widest. When the piece is buckled, the internal circumference at the largest hole is approximately 26” to 27"; at the smallest hole it is 23". This could either be used as a small belt or hat band.

The bracelet features a wonderfully and professionally crafted old pawn silver sandcast construction and shows a large round cut Dry Creek turquoise cabochon set into the face of the bracelet. The bracelet features a beautiful decoration of scalloped main body of the bracelet with a two prong bracelet frame. The condition of this sandcast bracelet is good and shows a patina adorning the bracelet consistent with the age of the bracelet and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this bracelet are 2" x 2 5/8" x 2 1/4" and the circumference is 4 1/2". The collective weight of this bracelet is 74.9g.

C. 1900- Reservation Era Spontoon Pipe Tomahawk

The lot features an Indian Reservation era spontoon pipe tomahawk from the Plains Indians of the early to mid 1900's. The piece exhibits a cast spontoon pipe tomahawk hea...mored showing a classic blade with median ridge running down both sides and under-curled basal processes. The blade is inlaid on both sides with a weeping heart and double spot with brass. The eyelet hole is diamond shaped showing heavy moldings, chevron pipe base and tall thin pipe bowl with four filed molded ridges. The head has a dark coloring and is paired with a diamond shaped wood haft. The haft appears to be original to the piece but its age cannot be confirmed. Showing a hot file burned pattern with a tapered diamond beveled wood with pierced hole below the gripping area and brass covered metal tacking at the head. Overall measures 23"L with the head being 10.25"L.

The lot features a ball head war club from the Eastern Woodlands Great Lakes Indians dating to the late 19th Century. This late-1800's example shows a classic root burl b...moreall head "S" pattern carved from a solid piece of wood showing a polychrome painted green and black pigment finish with solid brass square shank early old trade tacked design across the entire back, gripping area, along the head, and just below the head in a circle shield like and diamond pattern. The piece is carved from a lighter wood showing mineral pigment black and green paint, often seen from documented Eastern Woodlands, Great Lakes and Eastern Plains examples, such as the Eastern Plains 19th Century example with black head and green body which was offered for $8,000 in 2019. The piece comes with a custom museum metal display stand. The solid brass square shank tacks have a wonderful mellow orignal patina and overall the piece shows some dings, paint loss and patina from honest age and use. Provenance: From a Pennsylvania private collection and is likely from the Iroquois or Shawnee peoples in origin from the 1800's. Overall the club measures 17" by 4.5" by 3". The stand by itself is 7.25" by 4.5" by 3".

The top shows an oval polished cabochon of turquoise from the Kingman Turquoise Mine having a beautiful turquoise blue coloring with interesting matrix. Featured in this lot we have a Native American coyote pelt quiver and two arrows. The quiver is made from a full coyote pelt with the body forming the quiver and the tail across the bottom. The front legs stop above the elbow and longer back legs with them leather tassels decorated with feathers, trade beads, and brass caps. The top of the quiver shows the head folded over the side with a dream catcher design with a tassel of horse hair and a feather tassel. The side of the quiver shows a tasseled charm pouch and braided shoulder strap. The arrows show bone arrowheads and black feathers with sinew wrap. The piece shows good condition overall with some light wear. The quiver measures 40" long including the tail by 7" wide.

The lot features a set of circa 1890-1900’s Lakota Sioux beaded hide moccasins with hard soles. The set shows an Indian tanned Buffalo Bison hide with sinew sewn hard sole parfleche rawhide bottoms and period correct glass trade seed beadwork that is also sinew sewn along the entire top, sides and back. The sinew sewn beadwork shows a geometric pattern with greasy red centers having faceted metal crosses at the center and border in greasy sky padre blue, greasy green, greasy yellow and faceted metal. The set has a medium height ankle and long tongue. The bottoms have a very nice foot worn patina and the set is well preserved with little bead loss and some small old repairs, all from honest authentic age and use. Provenance: From a large Cowboy and Antique collection in Butte, Montana. Each measures 10.5”L soles by 4”W by 2.75”H ankle. Nice full size men’s moccasins from the late 19th turn of the century.

This is an exceptional Crow Apsaalooke Death Mask dating to circa 1890-1910’s collected from the Crow Reservation in Montana. The mask shows a paper mache plaster construction with early painted front in tans, black, browns, reds and blues. The mask was made from the face of an early Crow elder and said to have been handed down through the family over the years from the Crow Reservation in Montana. Provenance: The mask was examined by the three of the most prominent experts and collectors of American Indian antiquities in Montana and was found to be an authentic Crow Apsaalooke circa 1890-1910 example having a very rare high value. The mask has the same provenance and is from the same collection as the example offered in the North American Auction Co. November 2019 sale which sold for $2,460 (shown with bp). Cheyenne Beaded Buffalo Hide Possible Bag E.20th C

The lot features a beaded Buffalo hide fur flat possibles bag from the Cheyenne Indians from the 20th Century. This older piece features an Indian tanned or scrapped Great American Bison Buffalo hide with fur on the outside in a flat possible tipi bag pattern. The bag has a rectangular flap with short Buffalo hair having a band of geometric beadwork which further carrys along the entire outside edge of the bag, along the top, sides and bottom edge. The beadwork appears to be all early 1900's glass trade seed beads in colors of chalk white, red white heart, greasy blue, cobalt and greasy butterscotch yellow. The bag shows the fur along the entire back and front with a nice thick curly coat having a rich brown coloring in good conditoin with no apparent obvious or major shedding. The bag shows a sinew like or style thread possibly waxed sewing with a red dyed leather twisted tie at the top flap holding two tin rolled jingle dangle cones. The hide is in good condition being supple and soft and the beadwork appears to have little or no loss. Nice unique pattern piece. Measures overall 12.75"W by 10"L with an additional 12"L tie strap fringes (all with flap open).

19th C. Southern Cheyenne Bi-Point Stone War Club

The lot features a bi-point notched stone war club skull cracker with beadwork from the Southern Cheyenne Indians dating to the 19th Century. The piece features a solid stone carved head with bi-piont having a deep cut notched groove with raised moldings or bands of stone on eaither side. The war club has a long wooden haft handle which is secured to the head with a split wetted and wrapped piece of wood which is further wrapped in at the base in parfleche rawhide sewn with sinew and then wrapped in Indian tanned hide which is cut with a fancy scalloped edge and adorned with period correct glass trade seed bead beadwork, sewn with sinew. The beadwork is done in chalk white and black and shows loss. The hide band on the head is secured on the top, but does show a tear on both sides. The wood strap holding the stone head into place has been repaired as well. THe wood handle has a nice patina from age and use and shows remnants at the end of a hide and trade clothe drop held on with a single iron nail with the drop being no longer present. Provenance: From a large Native American antique collection in Iowa. Measures overall 27"L with the head being 5 5/8"L by 2.75"D. The head has a nice dark coloring with old chip on one end that has black remnants from char or paint.

Blackfeet Beaded Large Cradleboard Papoose c. 1950

This is an excellent full size large, beaded papoose cradleboard from the Blackfeet Piegan Indians of Northern Montana dating to circa 1950’s. The piece shows a full size piece with wood frame wrapped in Indian tanned buckskin which is beautifully beaded across the entire front top with a whimisical floral geometric pattern in trade pony beads. At the center is the area for the child with papoose cover over the head with scalloped edge framing the face, ties down the center and long wide hide fringe down each side. The piece is in traditional Northern Plains pattern as scene from the Blackfeet Piegan and Crow. The beadwork is done in all glass trade pony beads showing a white iridescent background with colors in iridescent green, yellow, orange, salmon and blue with glass trade seed beads in cobalt, red, and sky padre greasy blue. The piece is trade thread sewn and shows the ties and additional fringes on the reverse. The inside is stuffed with trade clothe in the shape of a child. Unlike other examples that are typically smaller toys, this is a full size large example which is truly beautiful. Provenance: From a large Cowboy and Antique collection in Butte, Montana. Blackfeet tribe can also be referred to as the Blackfoot, Pikuni, or Aamsskaapipikani and are a tribe of the Siksikaitsitapi people primirily beloging to the Piegan Blackfeet (Ampskapi Piikani) of the Blackfoot with the Reservation being located at Browning, Montana east of Glacier National Park at the Alberta, Canada border. Measures overall 34.25”L by 14.5”W by 6”D.

Frederic Remington is considered one of the most prolific and important Western artists of the 19th century. His works are immensely valuable, and his style is highly sought after. This bronze features a scene from the countryside in the heat of a stampede is a cowboy riding in the thick of the stampede. Frederic Remington shows his signature on the base of the bronze sculpture. This is a phenominal large casting with heavy weight, thick bronze with fine detail. The condition of this of this bronze is good with no obvious signs of damage and in good overall condition. The measurements of this bronze are 20 1/2" x 43" x 17 1/2".
