C. 1890 Navajo Old Crystal Trading Post Rug

19th Century Shawnee Pipe Tomahawk

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 745)

This is a excellent late-19th-century pipe tomahawk attributed to the Shawnee Native American Indians of Kentucky. The piece is from a large collection of frontier weapon...mores and accouterments and shows an attractive example with cast iron head. The pipe bowl is octagon shaped and the head is secured to the haft with an old buckskin hide gasket and brass tacks. The head has two unusual, small flat iron plates welded or forged onto the fore end of the head. Both are crudely punch stamped, the first with a date of 1860 and the other stamped “WOOD”. There was a documented mid-19th-century English blacksmith named Benjamin Wood, who worked out of the Cincinnati, Ohio area and forged tomahawks, knives, horseshoes, and other iron wares on the Ohio / Kentucky / Southern Indiana frontier. He is documented as an entry by Hartzler & Knowles book “Indian Tomahawks & Frontiersmen Belt Axes” is included in the photo gallery. The head appears to have been cleaned at some point in time and exhibits only mild corrosion and oxidation. The hardwood haft handle is elaborately decorated with brass tacks and some minor expected wear, dings, nicks and scratches. There is an old human teeth drop with old hand rolled tin cone danglers with trade beads attached to the bottom of the gripping area. This drop adornment was common with the Central Plains Pawnee Tribe in Kansas and Nebraska; who would often fight viciously. The Shawnee tribe in Kentucky and Indiana are the only known Eastern Woodlands tribe to have also practiced the used of teeth drops. The smoking tip appears to be an old bullet cartridge pounded into the haft. Total length of the tomahawk without drop is 21 inches. The head measures 8-inches long by 2 ½ inches wide across the bottom of the blade. Provenance: From the ex-Tom Hardy collection Indianapolis, Indiana.

The piece is comprised of a long piece of hand-carved walnut wood with a tapered design and three sets of cut circles along with old brass tacks. There is a single, large silver tack on the bottom end. The whipping straps are comprised of two long strips of old harness saddle leather and a small wrap of old stroud clothe. There is some minor and expected wear and the quirt has a nice, shiny patina. The star of the quirt is the gorgeous beaded wrist thong strap at the bottom end, done in typical Comanche beaded patterns and colors of the late 19th Century. Beadwork is all glass trade seed beads in chalk white, greasy white, greasy green, cobalt, red and sky padre blue. The inside of the wrist throng has some staining. This is truly a terrific 1890 Southern Plains quirt in well kept condition. A similar 19-inch long wooden-handled quirt sold in a Cowan’s / Hindman sale in September 2022 with a pre-sale estimate of $3,000 to $5,000 and hammered at $3,875. Provenance: From the ex-Mary Lou and Pierre DuPont collection St. Louis, Missouri and was purchased by the DuPont’s from a dealer at the Whitehawk show in Santa Fe in August 2003. Total length of 18 inches of the quirt itself and the strap hangs down an additional 21 inches in length.

Large Cigar Store Indian Carved Wood Statue

Lot # 22 (Sale Order: 22 of 745)

This lot features an exceptionally hand-carved Cigar Store Indian. Historically, these carvings would be placed outside of tobacco outlets, signifying to passerby that th...moree establishment sold tobacco products. This contemporary solid wood-carved Cigar Store Indian displays Chief Grey Wolf. He is adorned in a pair of Plains Indians fringed leggings and red breechcloth (breechclout), wearing a turquoise necklace and a turquoise bracelet. This appears to be a Cheyenne Dog Soldier, an Apache or Kiowa warrior chief. Excellent details highlight this carving, and it appears very life-like. The facial features are striking as is the wolf head headpiece. Previous damages appear to have been repaired with natural wood splits and checking exhibited throughout. Cracking and checking of timber is actually a very natural part of the life cycle of wood – even once it's been cut, shaped, and prepared for carving. Statue is in very nice and preserved condition. The paint colors are still strong. No other obvious marring noted. Measures 18"W x 24"L x 71.5"H including wood base. It appears to have been carved from one solid wood log.*

Large Model of Conestoga Wagon Circa. 1930-1970s

Lot # 23 (Sale Order: 23 of 745)

For your consideration is this large model of the Conestoga wagon made between 1930-1970s. This model wagon had been on display at the Gallatin History Museum on Main Str...moreeet in Bozeman, Montana for the year of 2022. The Conestoga wagon is a specific design of heavy covered wagons that were used extensively during the late 18th century and early 19th century in the eastern United States and Canada. It was large enough to transport loads up to 5.4 tons and was drawn by horses, mules or oxen. The Conestoga wagon was built with its floor curved upward to prevent the contents from tipping and shifting. Including its tongue, the average Conestoga wagon was 18 feet long, 11 feet high and 4 feet in width. The wagon model features the iconic curved canvas top and is constructed completely of wood. It features a small wood bull horn and model rifle on the front for decoration and two canvas bags on the bag tied to the wagon. One side of the wagon features a wood barrel and the other side, a plow tool and more storage area. The front of the wagon has the tongue and the hook-ups for being pulled by horses, mules or oxen. The tongue moves freely from side to side turning the front wheels with ease. The inside of the wagon has a small bench for sitting and features the brake level which moves the brakes onto the back set of wheels. The wheels spin freely and are lined on the outside with a thin sheet of metal for extra strength and protection. This model wagon is in very good condition and shows no signs of damage. There is slight wear from its age, but this gives the wagon its authentic, vintage look. The wagon measures 41 1/2" L x 17" W x 25 1/2" H.*
