Black Kettle Sioux Fully Beaded Moccasins 1860-70

Lot # 17 (Sale Order: 17 of 751)

The lot features a pair of fantastic fully beaded hide moccasins with hard parfleche soles, dating to the third quarter of the 19th Century from the Sioux Native American...more Indians. The piece has an old museum tag that is marked, “A-5 Black Kettle Sioux”, and is sewn under the tongue, corresponding with the “A-5” handwritten on the sole of the accompanying moccasin. Black Kettle could be a reference to being from the Chief Black Kettle (Moke-ta-ve-to / Mo'ohtavetoo'o born 1803, died 1868) family. Chief Black Kettle was a prominent Southern Cheyenne leader during the Indians Wars and married into the Wotapio/ Wutapai band (of Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne-Kiowa mix), which would lend to the tag and Sioux origin. The set shows a stiffened Indian tanned hide, which is completely covered in sinew sewn glass trade seed cen beads in a traditional geometric pattern, all being of the correct 1800’s period and extending down the tapering, long, tail-like tongue. The beadwork has a chalk white background with pattern in cobalt, greasy green, and red white heart. The top of the ankle has a fraying blue trade cloth piping, which appears to be thread sewn. The base shows parfleche rawhide hard soles and the entire moccasin appears to be sinew sewn in construction, a true attribute to age. The moccasins show very little-to-no bead loss with some minor separation in the sewing and stiffening of hide. This is truly a phenomenal pair of 1870’s moccasins in well-preserved museum condition. Provenance: From a private museum collection in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region of France. Each moccasin measures approximately 8.5” L across the sole by 3 3/8” W and 3.25” H at the ankle. The tongue is approx. 5.75” L.

This is a well-preserved beautiful set of beaded hide moccasins with hard parfleche soles, dating to the fourth quarter of the 19th Century from the Cheyenne Native Ameri...morecan Indians. The beadwork shows a traditional Maltese cross-like pattern on the top of the foot, along with a checkered pattern on the outside of the bottom edge of the foot, all done in chalk white, black, greasy blue, red, semi-transparent green, and semi-transparent yellow/ amber. The beadwork is also sewn with sinew, a wonderful attribution to the sets circa 1875-1885’s age. The set shows a medium ankle with original Indian tanned hide ties and slight tapering squared original tongue. The bases of the moccasins have a thick Bison Buffalo parfleche rawhide hard sole with nice foot worn pattern from honest age and use. The set is in well-preserved museum condition, showing little-to-no bead loss and slightly stiffening but still supple hide. Provenance: From a private museum collection in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region of France. Each moccasin measures approximately 10.25” L across the sole by 4 1/5” W and 4” H at the ankle. F & L Kahn & Bros F Series No. 312 Stove c. 1890

Lot # 22 (Sale Order: 22 of 751)

Featured in this lot is this F series no. 312 Wood stove from F. & L. Kahn & Bros, circa 1890-1894. The stove shows wonderful and professional construction and reads “W. P. McCormick” on the front; “Jointless Ashpit patent app'd for” along the side and ashpit; “F. & L. Kahn & Bros” on the back lip; “F Series no. 312” under the front door and the patent dates inside the front doors. Lazard and Felix Kahn moved their stove foundry operation from Hanging Rock, Ohio to Hamilton in 1884. Shortly afterwards, their market greatly expanded to include the entire United States and shipments to Europe and the Far East. The company began making gas stoves in 1888 and the name was changed to Estate Stove Company in 1905. Estate was purchased by RCA in 1952 and then by Whirlpool-Seeger in 1955. They closed the Hamilton plant in 1962. Over the lifetime of the company, they made wood and coal burning cook stoves, gas cook stoves, parlor heating stoves, the more modern Heatrola Stoves, and gas furnaces. The condition of this pot belly stove is fair, with the ring connected to the ashpit disconnected and broken on one tine; otherwise, there are no other obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this wood stove are 20 1/2" x 20 1/2" x 38".
