C.1924 Colt Army Special 38 Double Action Revolver

Lot # 36 (Sale Order: 1 of 38)

You are bidding on a Colt Army Special .38 Caliber Double Action Revolver from circa 1924. The revolver features a blue'd 6" barrel, frame, and six shot cylinder with har...mored rubber grips. In 1908, Colt introduced a new medium frame revolver to replace the New Army & Navy models. The new revolver used the much better action pioneered by the Colt New Pocket and New Service models. This new model would be the basis for every medium frame double action revolver Colt produced up to the Colt Python of 1955. The design changed so little over the years that many parts from a 1908 Army Special would interchange with a Python made in 2003. The new revolver was designed to allow use of more powerful ammunition, like the .38 Special and the .41 Colt. It was an immediate success with police departments and, under the Official Police name, would be the standard police issue service revolver into the 1960's. The Army Special was available with blue and nickel finishes. Barrel lengths were 4", 4 1/2", 5", and 6". Calibers were .32-20, the various .38 Colt Long and Short cartridges, .38 Special, and .41 Colt. The grips show brown construction with a checkered design and Colt logo design. This revolver shows good condition, with wear and handling marks from use and some damage to the grips. The mechanics function smoothly and are tight. The bore is in good condition, with good rifling. Serial Number: 511178, noted by Colt Army Special & Officers Model Revolvers manufactured in 1924. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

C. Sharps & Co. 22 LR MODEL 1 PEPPERBOX 1859-74

Lot # 39 (Sale Order: 3 of 38)

Featured in this lot we have a C. Sharps & Co. 22 Long Rifle Model 1 Pepperbox. The pepperbox features a brass frame, four shot barrel, and engraved gutta percha grips. T...morehe story of the Sharps four-barrel pistol begins, officially, on December 18, 1849. On that date, the United States Patent Office issued patent number 6960 for a revolver to Christian Sharps, then residing in Washington, D.C. This "revolver" was actually not a revolver at all, but a pepperbox in which the barrels didn't revolve. It was fired by a striker which did revolve on a center post to hit, in sequence, the percussion caps which were placed on nipples on the ends of the barrels. The side hammer served both as a cocking lever and as the force behind the striker. The pistol was not produced on a commercial basis until 1859, after Sharps had become sole owner of the Fairmont Rifle Works in West Philadelphia. By this time, the metallic cartridge had been introduced and Sharps was able to develop his design into a practical repeating pistol. Patent number 22753 was issued to Sharps on January 25, 1859, again for a "revolver". The first model was .22 caliber. Made with a brass frame, it had a spur or stud trigger and was a single-action, four-shot repeater. Approximately 85,000 of these little pepperboxes were made in the ten years between 1859 and 1868. This pepperbox is in good aesthetic condition, showing some signs of wear and use. The side of the frame is marked "C. Sharps & Co Philada, PA". Serial Number: 22790. This firearm qualifies as an antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.*

The smaller .25 caliber pistol is correctly fitted with only the frame mounted safety. The outside front of the case has a brass identification plate engraved with the Harrington & Richardson name etc. There is also a small “30” in brass numerals on the case, the meaning of which is unknown but perhaps a salesman sample case, or a museum collection number. A stunning cased pair of rare American auto pistols made during and just after World War I. Serial Numbers: 11745 for the .32, 3091 for the .25. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Rare Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 .45-90 Rifle

Lot # 162 (Sale Order: 14 of 38)

Exceedingly rare and desirable early production Full Deluxe Winchester 1886 octagon barrel rifle in big .45-90 calibIer. This Model 1886 with serial number 29982 was made...more in 1889. It is listed by serial number in the Winchester Shipping records housed at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. This number was called in to the museum and a “call-in” sheet was provided which contained the following information: this 1886 was listed as a Rifle, Caliber .45-90, Octagon Barrel, Plain Trigger, Checkered Stock, Pistol Grip and Shotgun Butt. It was received in the Winchester warehouse on Sept 19, 1889 and shipped the same day. Further, this unusual and striking rifle was fitted with extra fancy walnut stock and forearm. Additionally, the barrel is mounted with a sporting ladder sight with elevation slide intact. This sight is stamped “1876” and was probably a left over from the last of the big Model 1876 Winchester lever action rifles that were nearing the end of their production by this time, and being replaced by the stronger Model 1886. The front sight is a small globe with pinhead. A scarce and desirable western big game chambering in the Mode 1886, the .45-90 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) cartridge was the longest case chambering used by Winchester in this largest of John Browning’s designed lever action rifles. The top of the octagon barrel ahead of the receiver is clearly and correctly stamped with the caliber designation “45-90 WCF.” The 1886 in .45-90 chambering was very popular in the American West with riflemen who wanted even more power than the standard .45-70 Government round provided. The big Model 1886 action was the strongest and most potent lever action rifle of the day. Few surviving examples in this powerful black powder caliber remain today and are seldom offered on the collector market. The standard and correct 26” octagon barrel retains excellent Winchester markings that include: “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO., NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.” The upper tang is stamped with the earliest style marking and states simply, “MODEL 1886.” The deluxe special order features on this rifle are best appreciated by the limited numbers produced. According the standard reference, The Winchester Handbook by George Madis, only 280 Model 1886 rifles had checkering of stocks; only 796 had pistol grips; only 867 had shotgun butt plates and only 501 had special wood. Considering that nearly 160,000 Model 1886 Winchesters were made, these numbers are miniscule. Combined, they illustrate a Model 1886 that is extremely rare and especially desirable in the big .45-90 chambering! There can be very few Model 1886 rifles exactly like this one. The overall metal has naturally aged to a gray/brown patina. There remains some thin blue on the loading gate and on the bolt on top of the receiver. Additionally, the receiver shows fine screw heads. The wood to metal fit is extremely tight indicating that the wood has not been refinished or sanded. Even the checkering on the pistol grip and forend is fairly distinct. The action is tight with strong springs and the safety half-cock on the hammer holds solidly. As one would expect of a large black powder chambered 1886 made in 1889, the bore is somewhat dark, but shows rifling throughout. The bottom of the pistol grip has the correct ebony wedge inlay used on fancy rifles and the smooth steel shotgun butt plate is fine. A truly rare opportunity to acquire a most attractive, desirable and extremely rare variation 134 year old Model 1886 Full Deluxe Winchester in a great caliber. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Full Stock .45 Caliber Flintlock Octagonal Rifle

Lot # 163 (Sale Order: 15 of 38)

Full Stock Flintlock rifle with great frontier character. This .45 caliber with 34” octagon rifled bore muzzle loading rifle is of the typical style mountain men and trad...moreers used to barter with Native Americans for furs and pelts. It is unmarked aside from a small British proof mark stamped in the cenbter of the iron patchbox which was fairly typical as historically these arms were made fairly inexpensively using surplus and often bulk-imported British or other European parts. The stock of this rifle displays the “Roman Nose” gently curved butt stock profile and sports an iron butt plate with some worn scroll engraving on the top portion. The stock is decorated with scattered large and small brass tacks with a sunburst symbol on the left side by the cheek piece consisting of one large brass tack with “rays” formed from tiny tacks. There is also some very light line carving on the stock along the forearm to the muzzle. The iron trigger guard, like the patchbox and butt plate, appears to be another old surplus part utilized to make up a “trade rifle.” The browned barrel shows age and the iron parts already mentioned show great age and some rust pitting. The lock functionds correctly. The wrist exhibits a rawhide wrap repair held by aged brass tacks. Aside from this, the stock is sound and retains the wood ramrod. Portions of the butt stock show grime and darkening from age and use. Great western appearance and display. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Winchester Model 1873 .38-40 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 164 (Sale Order: 16 of 38)

Special order Winchester Model 1873 rifle. This unusual 1873 rifle features a special order half magazine with standard 24” round barrel. It is chambered in the large an...mored desirable .38-40 caliber. The serial number 433649 indicates a manufacturre date of 1892. According to the classic reference work, The Winchester Handbook by George Madis, of the over 720,000 Model 1873s produced by Winchester, only 2669 were special ordered with shorter than standard magazines. Madis also shows that of this number of 1873s, 586,487 were made in .44-40 caliber and 109,558 were made in .32-20 caliber. Only 24,826 were made in .38-40 caliber making this a fairly scarce rifle in its own right. With the half-magazine feature in this caliber rifle, it is a true Winchester rarity. Sophisticated riflemen of the day ordered their rifles with half-magazines as they tended to be more accurate than those featuring full magazines. This is because a long magazine attached to the bottom of the barrel changed “harmonics” and weight distribution as each cartridge was fired and another fed from the magazine tube. A half magazine that extended only to the end of the forearm did not have this problem. While it did not hold as many rounds in reserve, it could be counted on for extreme accurace. Interestingly, Theodore Roosevelt who was known for being a true rifle aficionado, ordered almost all of his special Winchester rifles with half-magazines. This example shows use, but was not abused. The barrel and receiver reveal an honest, uncleaned aged patina with some dull blue in the most protected areas and on the loading gate. All markings on the barrel and upper tang are present and distinct. It also retains the dust cover on the receiver top which all too often is missing. The stock and forend show normal handling, yet are uncleaned, unsanded and show a tight wood to metal fit. The action functions properly and the hammer retains a strong safety half-cock. The brass lifter on the receiver bottom is correctly engraved with the caliber and is also an uncleaned mellow patina. The barrel is fitted with a typical buckhorn rear sight with small Winchester German silver front sight blade. As expecterd from a black powder era Winchester, the bore is dark and worn with visible rifling that would benefit from a good cleaning. The 1873 Model was Winchester’s first rifle made for center fire, reloadable cartridges. It proved popular on the frontier as well as in the eastern woodlands. The rare .38-40 caliber was considered adequate for hunting about all game from rabbits to deer and bear. It was also a formidable weapon for self defense. This is an interesting and attractive 131 year old special order 1873 in a rare caliber with a doubly rare half magazine. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Sharps New Model 1859 .50-70 Civil War Carbine

Lot # 197 (Sale Order: 19 of 38)

Sharps New Model 1859 Civil War Carbine, serial number C25823, converted by the Sharps Company in 1867 from percussion ignition to take the more modern center fire .50-70...more Government cartridge. This was all on contract for the U.S. Government for reissue to western cavalry units for the Indian Wars. These desirable carbines have double history in them- first as primary Union cavalry weapons in the Civil War and then a few years later sent west to fight in the Indian Wars. Many of these were later sold off as surplus in the 1870s and saw use on the frontier as buffalo guns. The Texas Rangers were known to favor this model Sharps Carbine. This particular example has the desirable inspector cartouches in the left side of the butt stock- one under the sling ring bar and one in the center of the stock. This is an obvious indication that the stock has never been sanded or refinished. Further, it is especially interesting and historical as it shows evidence of sling carry wear on the left side of the stock (the light vertical rub mark) and the ring wear spot just above the ring bar which only issued and used carbines exhibit. The stock and forend show wonderful frontier use and wear, but no abuse. All wood is solid and the metal shows no evidence of abuse while retaining an attractive aged patina. There are good Sharps markings on various parts of the receiver with excellent mechanics. This fine carbine displays a bright bore with fine rifling throughout. This is a particularly desirable Sharps combining Civil War history with later Indian Wars usage and no doubt considerable civilian use on the frontier. Few cartridge conversion Sharps carbines display this kind of honest aged appearance plus retain their important original stock cartouches. You can’t find a gun with more history or appeal than this one! This firearm qualifies as an antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.*

Remington Model 6 "Boys Rifle" .22 S & LR Rifle

Lot # 198 (Sale Order: 20 of 38)

Remington Model 6 .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle “Boys’ Rifle.” Remington’s Model 6 was a modified and scaled down version of the famed rollingblock action rifles. With i...morets lightweight 20” round barrel and takedown configuration, it was intended for and marketed to the youth of the day. By simply turning the screw ahead of the bottom of the receiver, the rifle would easily be taken down for easy carry in a pack, canoe or on a bicycle. Manufactured from 1902-1933, the Model 6 was the dream of many a young boy! Unlike most of the cheaper, imported rifles, the Remington was of very high quality and deserving of the famed Remington name. Like this example, those chambered for the .22 Long Rifle cartridge are especially desirable. Early production rifles sported case hardened receivers with later production being full blue. This rifle with matching serial number 451411 on both barrel and receiver has the earlier style receiver. It is fitted with the correct small buckhorn factory rear sight with small blade front sight. All Remington markings on the receiver and barrel are sharp and clear. The stock and forarm are in fine condition having never been sanded or refinished. Further, the original steel Remington embossed butt plate is intact. The receiver case colors have aged to a lovely mottled patina. Similarly, the barrel blue has naturally aged and is mixing with an uncleaned and attractive natural brown patina. The action is tight with a strong safety half-cock on the hammer. Surprisingly, the bore is in very fine condition with excellent rifling throughout and any roughness extremely minor. Generally, these “Boys’ Rifles” were often lovingly “cherished to death” by their young owners who proudly learned the shooting and hunting skills with them that would last for the rest of their lives. Hence, most show very long and hard usage. Interestingly, here in Montana many of the rural one-room school houses had rifle/shotgun racks in the back of the classroom for the students to store their guns so they could hunt/forage with them on their way home after classes ended each day. Today, it is difficult to find a Remington Model 6 in this fine state of preservation. It truly represents an innocent time in American history when kids were expected to responsibly handle firearms safely from an early age, and help provide table fare for the family. This is a wonderful example from this long past time. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Springfield Model 1898 Krag Jorgensen Rifle

Lot # 235 (Sale Order: 25 of 38)

Featured in this lot we have a Springfield Model 1898 Krag Jorgensen .30-40 Krag bolt action sporting rifle. The Springfield Model 1898 Krag–Jørgensen rifle is a Norwegia...moren-designed bolt-action rifle that was adopted in 1892, as the standard United States Army military long arm, chambered for U.S. caliber .30-40 Krag cartridges. All versions and variants were manufactured under license by the Springfield Armory between 1892 and 1903 and famously served as the long arm during the Spanish–American War. The Army began testing bolt action designs in the 1870s and 1880s, but it was not until the trials in 1892 that the Krag Jorgensen became the new standard issue long arm. It was designed by Norwegian military officers, Ole Herman Johannes Krag and Erik Jørgensen, and subsequently adopted by Norway, Denmark, and the United States. The most distinct aspect of the Krag Jorgensen rifles and carbines is the built-in magazine design which hinges open from the right side of the action. When the United States adopted the Krag Jorgensen in 1892, it was under the nomenclature of the Model 1892, despite production not starting until 1894. With the new rifle came the new 30-40 Krag ammunition. Also known as .30 Army, .30 Government, and a host of other monikers, it was the first smokeless powder cartridge adopted by the U.S. Government. They served as the standard U.S. military firearms in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American war, the Moro Rebellion, and remained in use into the 21st century even after the adoption of the famous Springfield Model 1903. This Model 1898, features a 23" long round barrel, adjustable rear sights, fixed blade front sights, and walnut stock. The left side of the receiver is marked "Model 1898. U.S. Springfield Armory" with serial Number: 184300. The firearm shows good condition overall with some light wear due to age and use. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.*
