Diné (Navajo) Alfred Watchman Sand Painting

Lot # 14 (Sale Order: 14 of 713)

Featured in this lot is an Original Diné (Navajo) Alfred Watchman Sand Painting, "Big Thunder", Signed on reverse, framed. Watchman is a well-known Navajo sand painter fr...moreom Sheep Springs, Tohatchi, Navajo Nation, New Mexico. Intricately detailed and vibrant, this stunning Navajo artwork is wonderfully and professionally crafted sandpainting, a remarkable piece of art that embodies the rich cultural heritage of the Navajo Nation. Sandpaintings were, and still are, sacred images essential to a broad range of Navajo ceremonies. These rituals, called "Sings" are meant to heal. In the Navajo way, healing does not equate with a "cure", but with the restoration of balance and harmony within the afflicted person. Sandpaintings may blot out the violence of warfare for a returning veteran, or cleanse someone of the dissonance of living in cities for a long time. They may be protective, procuring a blessing for a new venture or for the coming of age of a young person. The artwork shows bands of geometric patterns decorating the warrior figure. Sand paintings are stylized, symbolic pictures prepared by trickling small quantities of crushed, coloured sandstone, charcoal, pollen, or other dry materials in white, blue, yellow, black, and red hues on a background of clean, smoothed sand. The sandpainting is in very nice condition, no obvious signs of marring. Wood frame exhibits scuffing to edges, visible art measure 7.5"W x 15.5"L, frame 9.75W x 17.75"L x .75"D.

19th C. Crow Dag w/ Beaded Sheath ex-Forest Fenn

Lot # 19 (Sale Order: 19 of 713)

This is a rare and exceptional American Indian Dag Knife attributed to the Crow Indians of Colorado dating to the 19th Century. The piece is from the ex-collection of not...moreed collector Forest Fenn of Santa Fe, New Mexico, later sold in the 1990’s to Ted Levy of Santa Rosa, California. This is a scarce piece as the Crow were not a tribe known to have used or possessed “dag” style knives regularly, likely stolen during battle, from a battlefield by a Crow warrior or by trade. This is a presentation grade knife, sometimes referred to as a Chief’s Grade knife. This is a paired with a Indian brain-tanned buffalo hide and trade clothe sheath with artful Crow beadwork on the front and long, frilly Indian hide fringes off the bottom, a later addition. Collector Fenn noted this as being the only Crow Dag and Sheath he had ever seen. Similar examples can be seen in “Early Knives and Beaded Sheaths of the American Frontier” (1997) and in "Indian Guns, Spears & Shields of the American Frontier (2002) by John Baldwin. Bonham’s Auction House listed a very similar example of Presentation Dag knife in their June 1, 2015, sale which sold for $18,750 and shows the same pattern of manufacture with the elaborate placards and flat grip having a rounded hilt area with flared gripping area which tapered to a round pommel (the knife blade had the same patina as the piece offered in this lot). Sotheby’s Auction House offered a Blackfoot Dag knife that sold for $22,500 that had the same grip pattern and patina blade. The beaver back dag knife shows a solid wood classic high grade dag knife handle with brass placards being supported with brass tacks and adorned with brass tacks. The sheath shows old glass trade seed beads in Cheynne pink, light sky padre blue, chalk white, greasy yellow, greasy green, cobalt and red. Provenance: Ex-Forest Fenn Santa Fe, NM and Ted Levy Santa Rosa, California. The knife is 13 ¾ inches long and the sheath not including the fringes or handle is 10 inches long. Well kept, good condition.

Captain Miles Keogh's Comanche War Horse Photo

Lot # 20 (Sale Order: 20 of 713)

This is a cabinet card photograph of Comanche War Horse to Captain Myles Keogh of the 7th Cavalry under George Armstrong Custer and sole survivor of the Battle of the Lit...moretle Bighorn. The image is by Joseph Judd Pennell circa 1889 taken at Fort Reily, Kansas of war horse Comanche being held by Sergeant Korn. The cabinet card is marked with embossed lettering, “Pennell Junction City, Kans.” and in the photo, “Korn – Comanche Caption on photograph reads: "Now at Fort riley, Kansas Troop "I", Seventh Cavalry, and taken care of by Korn, who was at the time of the Custer Massacre in Troop "I" was at least five years old in '68, when he went through the Cheyenne campaign in the Indian Territory; was one of the few horses that got through the trial; was afterwards ridden by Col. Keogh and was his mount at the Little Big Horn. Comanche was wounded seven times there: three severe, and four light flesh wounds. The seven wounds were; (1) through the neck, (2) just behind the front shoulder, passing clear through. (3) In hind quarter, passing out between hind legs. He is now at least twenty-six years old. Photographed May 21, 1889, by Ramsour & Pennell.” Comanche was bought by the U.S. Army in 1868 in St. Louis, Missouri and sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was then bought for personal mount, to be ridden only in battle by Captain Myles Keogh of the 7th Cavalry. He received his name in 1868 when, in fighting against the Comanche Indians in Kansas, the horse was wounded by an arrow to the hindquarters and continued to fight, hence he received the name Comanche. On June 25, 1876, Captain Keogh rode Comanche at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer. Their entire detachment was killed, with the exception of war horse Comanche, who was badly wounded. He was transported to Fort Lincoln where he was nursed back to health, but ultimately retired from service in 1878. He later died of colic on November 7, 1891, and is one of only four horse in the United States history to be given a military funeral with full military honors (the others being Black Jak, Sergeant Reckless and Chief). His remains were preserved, and the taxidermy mount now on display at the University of Kansas National History Museum, still on display today. This image shows Fort Reily Cavalry Army Sergeant Korn holding Comanche next to a U.S. Army building. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Another nearly identical example of this image was sold by Heritage Auctions in 2008 for about $800 and is the only similar example we could find of this exact image. Measures 6 5/8” by 4.5”. The back is marked in pencil, “Comanche – Survivor of The Little Big Horn Fight Taken at Ft. Riely, Kansas Held by SGT Ko(h)rn.”

"Boots and Saddles" 1st Ed. Elizabeth Custer

Lot # 23 (Sale Order: 23 of 713)

For your consideration is this Scarce First Edition of "Boots and Saddles" by Elizabeth Custer, 1885. Harper & Brothers, New York publisher. "Boots and Saddles or Life in Dakota with General Custer" With Portrait and Map. This is a wonderful narrative of the life of General Custer on the plains in the mid to late 1800's. The book was written as a dedication to her husband, General George Armstrong Custer, and chronicles their life together until his untimely death at the hands of the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho Indians at the Battle of the Little Bighorn (known to the Lakota and other Plains Indians as the Battle of the Greasy Grass, and commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand, in 1876. After President Ulysses S. Grant publicly blamed General Armstrong Custer for the disaster at Little Bighorn, Elizabeth Custer, the general’s wife, took on the role of his public defender. Beginning with "Boots and Saddles" in 1885, she would go on to publish a trilogy of autobiographical works about the life of her martyred husband, to include "Tenting on the Plains" (1887) and "Following the Guidon" (1890). As she writes in the Preface, “One of the motives that have actuated me in recalling these simple annals of our daily life, has been to give a glimpse to civilians of garrison and camp life–about which they seem to have such a very imperfect knowledge…” Largely as a result of her books and decades of campaigning on his behalf, General Custer's legacy transformed into that of the brave fallen hero and the Battle of the Little Bighorn became the most important symbol of the American-Indian wars. "Boots and Saddles" covers the period just before the battle of the Little Bighorn, and was the first to include the portrait in addition to the expected contents of Native American Indians, Sioux and Dakota tribes, the Black Hills Expedition, the U.S. Army and Cavalry. This tan coloured cloth bound gold gilt stamped hardcover is in fair condition, scuffing noted to cover edges, front cover gilt is still bright. A gold gilt sunrise behind a mountain range dominates the front cover whilst a piece of sheet music is superimposed over a gold gilt bugle on the top right corner. The stamped sunrays are continued onto both the spine and rear cover. Some looseness exhibited on spine. Age tanning and foxing observed throughout intact pages, soiling on top edge. Measures 5.25"W x 7.5"L x 1"D, weight 1lb.
