Winchester Model 1892 .32 WCF Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 36 (Sale Order: 1 of 36)

This lot has a Winchester 1892, Saddle Ring Carbine in popular and scarce .32 WCF (.32-20) caliber, made in 1930. This carbine with serial number 998053 is in fine and or...moreiginal overall condition. One of the last of the great Model 1892s, this carbine was made a year after the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the beginning of the Great Depression that lasted until World War II. Production of all Winchester rifles during this time was extremely limited and examples made during this time period are rare. The Model 1892, was one of Jonathan Browning’s best designs that incorporated all of the strength of the famed large caliber Model 1886 into a compact receiver intended for revolver length cartridges. Many frontiersmen, homesteaders and woodsmen relied on this model for all of their shooting needs. The Model 1892 replaced the relatively weak Model 1873 action and was intended to digest modern, smokeless powder ammunition that became available in the late 1890s. More full length, 24” barreled rifles were produced by Winchester than 20” barreled carbines. This makes carbines much more difficult for collectors and shooters to locate today. Most carbines seem to have been chambered in .25-20 and .38-40 which makes finding a carbine in .32-20 very difficult. This example shows fine thinning, but uncleaned blue on the barrel and magazine that now displays a most attractive aged appearance. The receiver is also uncleaned and shows a gray patina with good blue on the loading gate. The saddle ring is intact and the stock and forearm display a good wood to metal fit. Additionally, the bore is minty bright all the way through, just as it was when it left the factory. This is uncommon as most carbines saw hard use and the bore conditions reflect this by being worn and deeply pitted. This carbine is equipped with a correct Winchester carbine ladder sight with slide intact mated with a correct standard Winchester carbine front sight. All screw heads are in very good condition. All Winchester address and patent markings on the barrel are correct and sharp as are all Winchester proof marks and the caliber designation. Additional Winchester markings are distinct on the upper tang. The action is tight and the safety half-cock holds securely. The .32-20 chambering was especially popular with sheep herders who lived out of wagons for weeks at a time. Their Winchester .25-20 and .32-20 caliber carbines were frequently used to protect their flocks from coyotes and wolves. This is a particularly attractive and fine 93 year old example that would be right at home in the finest Winchester or Old West collection. Finding a Model 1892 Saddle Ring carbine in .32-20 caliber is difficult and finding one with a pristine bore is even more difficult! The rifle weighs 5lbs 12oz. Serial Number: 998053. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires an FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.*

Winchester Model 1886 .45-70 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 40 (Sale Order: 5 of 36)

Winchester 1886 26” round barrel rifle in the rare and desirable big .45-70 caliber. The serial number 121760 indicates a manufacture date of 1900. A scarce and desirabl...moree western big game chambering in the Mode 1886, the .45-70 WCF (Winchester Center Fire or .45 Government) cartridge was one of the most powerful chamberings used by Winchester in this largest of John Browning’s designed lever action rifles. The big Model 1886 action was the strongest and most potent lever action rifle of the day. Few surviving examples in this powerful black powder caliber remain today and are seldom offered on the collector market. The standard and correct 26” barrel displays a thinning blue finish and retains excellent Winchester markings that include: “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO., NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.” The upper tang is stamped with the earliest style marking and states simply, “MODEL 1886.” The bolt located on the top of the receiver also shows a deep and rich blue finish. The receiver blue is strong and like the barrel and magazine shows some restoration. The action is tight with strong half-cock safety on the hammer. This fine 1886 has had the butt stock and forearm professionally restored using fancy grained walnut, high grade wood finish, sharply cut checkering and a Winchester embossed correct hard rubber shotgun butt plate. The bore is bright and excellent with sharp rifling all the way through which is unusual for an early vintage cartridge rifle. Further, this early 1886 is fitted with a flip up rear barrel sight and typical Rocky Mountain blade front sight. The top of the octagon barrel ahead of the receiver is correctly stamped with the caliber designation “45-70” The 1886 in .45-70 chambering was very popular in the American West with riflemen who wanted even more power than most lever action rifle rounds provided. These large caliber rifles are rarely found with good condition bores, especially in the most powerful chamberings. This is an exceptional attractive and seriously powerful frontier rifle in particularly fine and visually appealing condition. The rifle weighs 8lbs 2oz. Serial Number: 121760. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Winchester M1895 .35-40 Krag Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 71 (Sale Order: 6 of 36)

Winchester 1895 Saddle Ring Carbine in standard caliber .30-40 Krag. This scarce variant of the famed box-magazine John Browning designed rifle with serial number 75871 w...moreas manufactured in 1911. The majority of Winchester Model 1895s were actually in musket configuration and sold to Russia for World War I. Very few of these have ever returned to the U.S. and little is now known of their whereabouts. Aside from these, Winchester produced a number of Model 1895 sporting rifles. The least produced were the saddle ring carbines. The standard caliber for all but the Russian Muskets in this model was .30-40 Krag. For the first couple of decades of the 20th century, the .30-40 was considered one of the most powerful cartridges of the time. It was especially popular since its introduction in the 1890s as the first U.S. Government’s small-bore smokeless powder cartridge. It far outshot the classic .30 WCF (.30-30) cartridge with regard to velocity and sheer power. The Model 1895 also had the advantage of using one of the earliest box magazines which allowed the use of pointed bullet ammunition. Tubular magazines as used on most other lever action rifles can only be loaded safely with blunt nose bullets. The 1895 Saddle Ring Carbine was made in limited numbers, but was very popular with the Texas and Arizona Rangers. Interestingly, this example, was made in the second year of the Mexican Revolution. This particular carbine is also unusual in that it retains the wood handguard fitted to the top of the barrel. Nearly all 1895 carbines found today are missing this important part. This 112 year old Winchester exhibits smooth gray wear on the receiver and barrel. It also retains the original and correct military style tangent ladder rear sight with adjustable slide. The action is tight, the bore shows fine rifling throughout The upper tang shows all the correct Winchester Model 1895 designation markings along with all the small Winchester patent dates and address on the left side of the receiver. Interestingly, the forearm and handguard show “smooth” heavy wear consistent with saddle scabbard carry as well as some honest saddle wear to the left side of the forend and handguard- typical of the carbine being held by a right handed rider resting the carbine over the saddle in front of him. Intriguingly, there are seven very old and very worn-in “kill notches” shallowly carved in the left side of the forend just ahead of the receiver. One can only wonder what each stands for! Similarly, the butt stock, with correct original butt plate with sliding trapdoor for cleaning rods, shows “weathering” to the walnut which is typical of a carbine carried exposed to the elements over long periods of time in a saddle scabbard with the butt exposed to the elements. Model 1895 Saddle Ring Carbines in any condition are seldom encountered on the collector market today and those that turn up usually show very heavy use and often abuse. This is an fine original frontier example of a Winchester Model designed for the modern rifleman/lawmant toward the end of the Wild West years. Serial Number: 75871. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Marlin Model 20 .22 Short Pump Action Rifle

Lot # 73 (Sale Order: 8 of 36)

Exceptionally rare Marlin Model 20-A .22 SHORT CALIBER GALLERY GUN. The Model 20-A pump action rim fire rifle was typically made to accept .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle cartridges. Only the Model 20-A Gallery Model was chambered for .22 Short only. This limited production special rifle is rarely encountered today. The Model 20-A was made from 1911-1922. This example with serial number 5328 (located on the inside of the tang under the wood stock) is in fine condition considering that Gallery Guns typically saw very hard use, and often abuse, at carnivals and fairs across the country. They were rarely cleaned or maintained and usually saw thousands of rounds fired each year. This rifle has correct Marlin markings on the upper tang (partially worn from years of handling and shooting!) and on the correct 23” octagon barrel top with the last patent date of 1904. It sports the original small buckhorn rear sight with blade front sight. The barrel retains fine aged blue while the magazine tube shows an uncleaned very aged blue/brown patina. The receiver is mainly an uncleaned gray with some very small traces of aged blue in the most protected areas. The action functions fine and the hammer displays a firm and solid half-cock safety notch. It appears that only the magazine spring cap/follower is missing (the spring is intact) and should be easy to replace. Surprisingly, the stock and forearm are free from cracks or chips and shows good wood to metal fit. The barrel is clearly caliber stamped “22 S” at the breech end on the left side octagon flat. As is us usual for shooting-gallery guns in general, the bore on this rare Marlin is dark and shows heavy wear from early corrosive .22 Short Gallery ammunition. With octagon barrel, walnut stock and curved crescent butt plate and takedown feature, this Marlin Gallery Gun congers images of warm summer nights at county fairs in the pre and post World War I era when shooting galleries represented good American fun instead of the perceived threats that they would represent today. A chance to own a true piece of early 20th Century Americana! The rifle weighs 4lbs 10oz. Serial Number: 5326. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Colt Officers Model .38 Special Target Revolver

Lot # 74 (Sale Order: 9 of 36)

Early Colt Officers Model .38 Colt/Special Target Revolver. This is the earliest style of officers Model and was the first side-swing cylinder medium frame revolver Colt ...moreproduced with target sights. Without the adjustable target sights, it would be the “Model 1895 New Army/New Navy” revolver. Quickly identified by the long cylinder notches and left turning cylinder (all later revolvers revolved clockwise), this model is often called by collectors “Left Wheelers.” This example with serial number 261378 was made in 1906. The cylinders of this model were all bored to accept either the .38 Colt service cartridge or the longer, more modern .38 Special cartridge that was introduced by Smith and Wesson in 1899. Very few of these target “Left Wheelers” were produced, and as the name implies, they were intended as either target arms or as a high quality above-the-standard issue revolver for police or military officers who were then carrying fixed sighted .38 Colt caliber revolvers. This model is further distinguished by having finely checkered walnut grips (the military model had smooth walnut). Additionally, the back strap and trigger face are beautifully checkered. The frame retains most of the early high polish Colt blue of that era and the action was hand fitted and polished to perfection. Fine bright bore and the cylinder also retains excellent blue. The grips fit perfectly and show only light wear to the checkering. The barrel only appears to have had correct and matching restorative blue added and retains all the very early first model “OFFICERS MODEL COLT D.A.38” (for Double Action) marking as well as the Colt address and patent markings on the barrel top with the correct last patent date 1901. There is still good fire blue on the back of the hammer and trigger sides as well as a distinct early style “rampant Colt” in a circle stamping on the left side of the frame. It shows matching assembly numbers on the inside of the frame, yoke (inside in front of the cylinder) and cylinder release latch. These Left Wheeler Target Officers Models are considered the “grandfather” of all the target sighted later models including the famed Python, Diamondback and Anaconda models. All Officers Models are scarce with these early “COLT D. A. .38” marked revolvers extremely rare. The revolver weighs 2lbs 2oz. Serial Number: 261378. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

RARE Winchester Model 1873 .38 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 108 (Sale Order: 13 of 36)

Winchester 1873 EXTREMELY RARE SPECIAL ORDER EXTRA LONG 26 INCH octagon barrel rifle with non-standard special case colored receiver in desirable, large caliber .38-40, s...moreerial number 568835 made during the tail end of the Frontier Era in 1903. Winchester made over 720,000 Model 1873 rifles and carbines. According to the standard reference: The Winchester Handbook, by George Madis, of this huge number of 1873s only 1201 rifles had barrels longer than the standard length of 24”. Considering that Winchester offered extra long lengths all the way to 36” in round barrels, octagon barrels and half-octagon barrels, there could only be a handful of 26” length octagon barrel rifles manufactured in this caliber...and of these the survival rate would have to be even smaller, making this rifle one of a very few in existence today. Additionally, blued receivers were standard with case coloring on the receiver an extreme rarity and almost never encountered. Interestingly, it seems most special order long barrel rifles were in the smaller caliber .32-20, again, making this example even more rare in the large .38-40 chambering. This is the classic “Gun That Won the West!” An very fine condition example, this 121 year old Winchester still retains fine deep aged blue on the barrel and magazine. The special order long 26” octagon barrel also retains excellent and clear Winchester markings as does the upper tang. Walnut butt stock and forearm are in fine condition with only normal light handling marks. It correctly has the sliding brass door compartment in the butt plate for storing cleaning rods. Like the barrel, the receiver shows good vivid case color on portions of the right side plate and around the side plates of both sides. There is also good color in the protected areas with strong blue on the loading gate and mottled uncleaned gray/brown on the balance. This fine 1873 rifle also retains a very tight action and strong springs. The sliding dust cover on the receiver top is intact (these are usually missing). The un-polished brass lifter on the receiver bottom is correctly engraved with “38 CAL” and shows an attractive mellow patina. The lever catch is also intact and the receiver screws are excellent. This superior, large caliber Model 1873 is in better condition than normally encountered on the collector market today. The action is tight with strong springs and solid safety half- cock. Even the bore is in bright excellent condition with strong rifling. It is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight and blade front sight. The Model 1873 was the standard for lever actions throughout the Frontier Period in the West which, in some areas, lasted well into the twentieth century. Most surviving specimens show heavy use and often abuse with broken or missing parts making this example far better than normally encountered. This rifle, in the very rare and desirable extra long barrel length of 26 inches combined with case colored receiver plus large caliber .38-40 is a true Winchester rarity. The rifle weighs 8lbs 4oz. Serial Number: 568835. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Winchester Model 1876 .45-70 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 110 (Sale Order: 14 of 36)

Winchester 1876 early 2nd. Model .45-75 caliber sporting rifle, serial number 13144, made in 1880. The Model 1876 was Winchester’s first truly big bore repeating rifle. E...moressentially, it is a much larger version of their popular Model 1873 which was chambered for the “revolver length” cartridges .44-40, .38-40 and .32-20. The Model 1876 was designed for big game hunting primarily in the western part of the country where game much larger than eastern deer and black bear were commonly found. It is interesting to note that Theodore Roosevelt was a big fan of the Model 1876 and used several throughout the West that he had special ordered from Winchester. The Model 1876 was a serious specialized rifle that was made in limited quantities. It was replaced by the Model 1886 in that same year. This rifle with 28” round barrel is chambered in the powerful and popular caliber .45-75. This cartridge held a .45 caliber lead bullet weighing 350 grains in front of a full 75 grains of black powder. It was the most powerful .45 caliber offered in this model (the other being the lesser .45-60). This was a very potent cartridge that was used successfully on elk, grizzly bears and even buffalo, which were hunted in Montana as late as 1883. Most surviving 1876 rifles show very heavy frontier use and often abuse. The second model is identifiable by having the dust cover rail on top of the receiver held by screws. The final 3rd Model has this rail forged integral with the receiver top and lacks screws. This early example is in much finer condition than normally encountered today. The barrel, magazine and receiver display an attractive even, but uncleaned naturally aging blue/brown patina. The 28” barrel was factory fitted with the desirable flip-up “sporting ladder” rear sight with elevation slide intact that is dated 1876 as well as the correct original Winchester blade front sight. The barrel top retains sharp and clear Winchester markings and patent dates. The mellow brass lifter on the bottom of the receiver is also in fine condition. This example also retains the original dust cover, which is often missing on this model. The butt stock and forearm are both solid and show only light normal handling marks with one small and insignificance chip at the left upper tang receiver juncture. The wood to metal fit is tight indicating that the walnut stock and forend have not been sanded or refinished. The action is tight with strong springs and smooth functioning. The bore is excellent and retains fine, sharp rifling all the way through- this is extremely unusual for a rifle designed for black powder cartridges and is almost never encountered in this model. Overall, a most attractive and rare “big bore” 144 year old Winchester that is one of the most desirable, sought after, yet difficult to obtain, models in the entire lever action rifle field. The rifle weighs 9lbs 10oz. Serial Number: 13144. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Colt Bisley .44-40 Frontier Six Shooter Revolver

Lot # 161 (Sale Order: 15 of 36)

In this lot is a Colt Bisley .44-40 Frontier Six Shooter with desirable 4 ¾” barrel made1904. This is a lovely untouched example that was period fitted with now mellow an...mored aged stag grips. During this time of production the most common caliber for this iconic handgun was .32-20 with the .38-40 close behind in sales. The big .44-40 and .45 Colt Bisleys were made in fewer numbers and are now difficult to find. The .44-40 or .44 W.C.F. (Winchester Center Fire) chambered Colts were typically paired with a rifle or carbine of the same caliber and are almost always associated with frontier use. In fact, only this chambering has the “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER” stamping below “(BISLEY MODEL)” on the left side of the barrel. This is a truly fine example showing good lightly aged blue on the cylinder, fine blue on the barrel with only some wear and browning on the left side from holster carry. The ejector housing retains excellent blue on the top and bottom portions with some of the outside showing wear again from holster carry. The barrel top retains the sharp two line Colt address marking that was only used on 4 ¾” revolvers with the more common 5 ½” and 7 ½” versions having a one line marking. This revolver with serial number 254846 also retains screws with excellent screw heads and an unmarred cylinder pin. The action is fine and the bore is surprisingly excellent with sharp rifling all the way through. The case colored frame and blued grip straps have aged to a soft and uncleaned plum-brown patina with fine blue on the trigger guard sides and protected areas. This Colt also has matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard and grip strap along with sharp patent markings on the left side of the frame. The Bisley variation of the famed Single Action Army was a popular arm on the western frontier and is often seen in period photographs especially from the Southwest. An uncleaned example in this rare and desirable .44-40 caliber is a true treasure. A fine Colt in an exceptional state of preservation with a great deal of blue! The period stag grips also add to the attractive appearance of this Frontier Bisley! The revolver weighs 2lbs. 8oz. Serial Number: 254846. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.*

Winchester Model 1894 .38-55 Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 198 (Sale Order: 21 of 36)

Antique Winchester Model 1894 octagon barrel rifle in rare and desirable .38-55 caliber with the early serial number 113587, which according to The Winchester Handbook by...more George Madis, indicates a manufacture date of 1898. When the Model 1894 rifle was introduced in late1894 it was chambered only in the black powder loaded calibers of .32-40 (.32 caliber bullet with 40 grains of black powder) or .38-55 (.38 caliber bullet with 55 grains of black powder). Once Winchester perfected barrel steel that would withstand the new smokeless powder pressures along with copper jacketed bullets instead of lead slugs, the revolutionary, and still popular, .30 WCF (also known as the .30-30 Winchester cartridge) was introduced. This occurred sometime in 1895-1896. In 1898 Winchester was still producing some .32-40 and .38-55 rifles, as these were still the accepted rounds of the day, but the trend was to the new smokeless powder cartridges and the .32-40 and .38-55 began to see limited production numbers. To find one of the very early production octagon rifles in .38-55 caliber is very difficult. This rifle shows fine aged blue on the standard 26” length octagon barrel and lovely aged soft blue on the full magazine. The barrel retains all the clear and sharp early Winchester address stampings. The upper tang behind the hammer also retains the correct very early markings “MODEL 1894” over “WINCHESTER” over “PAT. AUG. 21, 1894.” The receiver reveals a lovely dark aged plum/blue appearance and fine blue on the loading gate. The bolt on top of the receiver shows a nice aged blue also. Sights consist of the original standard buckhorn rear sight and a Winchester blade front sight. The walnut stock and forend are the nicely reddish-brown hallmark Winchester color. The stock and forend show good wood to metal fit, indicating that the stock has not been sanded or refinished. The forend shows minimal handling while the butt stock shows only slightly more wear probably from being carried in a saddle scabbard with the butt stock exposed more to the elements. The left side of the forend cap only lacks the retaining screw- easily replaced. The action is tight and the bore shows good rifling all the way through. The Model 1894 was a popular rifle with lawmen, sportsmen and especially with the Klondike Gold Seekers in Alaska beginning in 1898. Many consider this Jonathan Browning designed rifle to be the finest and most modern tubular magazine lever action rifle Winchester ever produced. A rare opportunity to acquire a classic, very early production and historically significant Winchester with very fine appearance. The rifle weighs 7lbs 4oz. Serial Number: 113587. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
