Thi...mores particular style of desk first appeared in England in the early 18th century. The kneehole desk is defined by its ‘kneehole’ in the center allowing the desk’s user to comfortably sit with his or her legs underneath the writing surface. At the same time, the kneehole desk retains drawers on either side to maximize storage. Kneehole desks also often featured central cupboards behind the kneehole space for additional storage. This kneehole desk features a writing space on the very top of the desk with a long drawer that extends the entire width of the desk below the writing area. The long drawer is ornately carved with designs and features bail handles set on batwing brass components and a keyhole in the center of the drawer. On either side are three smaller drawers also showing bail handles and batwing brass components. The center kneehole space shows a small cabinet for more storage with a finely carved cabinet door and keyhole on the left side. The top and bottom of the kneehole desk shows a finely carved gadrooning, a carved ornamental edging consisting of a series of convex sections resembling curved, oval fluting or reeding. The bottom of the desk shows six greatly carved claw-and-ball feet, a rare sight on Chippendale styled kneehole desks. Overall the desk shows good condition with no signs of obvious damage and little wear for its age. The desk measures 19 1/2" L x 41 1/2" W x 32" H.*

1907 1st Edition Mark Twain "A Horse's Tale"

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 23 of 740)

Featured in this lot is a 1907 First Edition, "A Horse's Tale" by Mark Twain. "A Horse's Tale", one of Mark Twain’s lighter writings is a story about different perspectives on life, mainly from the vantage point of Soldier Boy - renowned Buffalo Bill’s horse, as well as an orphaned little girl, Cathy. The setting for this novel by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), is a fictional frontier outpost with the U.S. 7th Cavalry. When the general's orphaned niece arrives, Buffalo Bill takes her under his wing and ultimately lends her Soldier Boy, so they may seek adventure together. Twain uses the friendship between the girl and the horse as the basis for his eventual indictment of the barbarism of Spanish bullfighting. Filled with sharp humor, satire as well as sadness, this book deals with the impressions in life, the reasons for existing, all from the perspective of a little girl and her horse. A Horse’s Tale is a must read by both Mark Twain fans and people enjoying a masterfully written story with hidden elements. Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was praised as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced", and William Faulkner called him "The Father of American Literature". This red clothbound stamped hardcover book is in very nice condition, very slight scuffing to cover edges. Intact pages exhibit slight tearing to first 24 pages, age tanning and very slight foxing, no other obvious marring noted. Measures 5.25"W x 8.25"L x .75"D.

1885 Personal Memoirs Of U. S. Grant 1st Edition

Lot # 27 (Sale Order: 25 of 740)

Featured in this lot is an 1885-1886 First Edition copies Vol. I & II Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant by Major General Ulysses S. Grant himself. The piece was published in 1885 by Charles L. Webster & Company New York and pressed by J. J. Little & Co., Nos. 10 to 20 Astor Place, New York. The piece shows a brown cloth and leather cover with bold gold stamped lettering and seal. The book is a fascinating read with a rare fold-out of the terms of surrender given to Robert E. Lee. Volume I shows an eye catching etching of Grant as a young soldier with Volume II having a portrait of the more well known image of President U.S. Grant. These memoirs were written from the Fall of 1884 and completed only four days before Grant's death on July 23, 1885. The set was published by Grant's friend, Samuel Clemmons, better know as Mark Twain, under the alias of his nephew, Charles L. Webster. Overall, this set is a rare and excellent collection. Volume I, after the title page, features what appears to be a hand written note by Grant himself (etching or print). The condition of this set is fair-good, with damage and slight repair to the spine of Volume II but still retaining stiffness. Covers have wear and tear from the books' vintage age and the pages have been preserved well. The measurements of the books are 9 1/2 " x 6 1/2 ".*
