Umatilla Polychrome Parflecehe Envelope c. 1890

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 757)

This is truly a fantastic geometric pattern pigment polychrome painted parfleche envelope from the Umatilla Native American Indian tribe and dating to the late 19th Centu...morery. The piece shows a Great American Bison Buffalo parfleche rawhide construction with exceptional mineral ocher pigment polychrome painted design in a geometric traditional pattern showing reds, blues, greens, and yellows. The bag is held together with later added hide ties. The term parfleche was first coined by the French fur traders and derived from the French word “parer” meaning defend and “fleche” meaning arrows, as the hide was tough enough to be used as a shield and deflect an arrow. The original containers had graphics that were maps, geographical depictions such as rivers and mountains, or symbols that told the family’s stories. Once the parfleche left the family, the story was lost and the parfleche became Indian art rather than a meaningful storyteller. Umatilla people have traditionally inhabited the Columbia Plateau region of the Northwestern Unites States, along the Umatilla and Columbia Rivers. Umatilla artifacts are increasingly scarce with most authentic examples, such as this mid to late 1800’s envelope, being in or from museum collections. Umatilla Polychrome Parfleche Envelopes have been offered for public sale showing the same quality and pattern as the one offered in this lot by such honorable houses as Skinner Auctions, Cisco’s Gallery, Sundog Gallery, Cowan’s Auction and in various museum collections such as the Penn Museum. This piece shows fine original paint and overall good condition for being well over 100 years of age. Many examples offered for sale are merely tourist trade parfleche with poor painting and thin hides, which this example is most definitely not as it shows a heavy Bison hide and wonderful painting dating to the circa 1880-1890’s. This is truly an extraordinary nomadic traveling storage piece that now is seen as one of the original American works of art. Provenance: From one of the largest American Indian Collections in the country in Billings, Montana. When tied shut, the envelope measures 27"L by 16.5"W by about 2" thick.

Roy Kerswill Original "Plunder" Painting

Lot # 12 (Sale Order: 12 of 757)

For your consideration is an original Roy Kerswill commissioned painting titled “Plunder”. Born in Devon, England, Roy was the eldest of four children. From an early age, his main interest was drawing and painting, which was recognized at an early age when he won a scholarship to the Bristol College of Art at age 11. Roy served three years in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and saw much of the world. To further his travel interests, Roy was one of a four-man party from the U.K. that traveled to Canada in 1948 to carry out a three year adventure of North America. In order to finance such travel, the four had to obtain casual employment along the way. Roy was one of the two in the foursome who secured such financially rewarding employment that they made the decision to leave the party and stay in North America. Roy took up residence in Jackson Hole, Wyoming during the summers and would travel the American southwest during the winters. This beautiful painting was commissioned by the consignor with a request to capture the polarities in life and the contrast between light and dark. These requests can be seen through the piece in the color choice and the “sun’s” placement. The painting depicts a Native American woman trying on her haul after her brave husband went “shopping”. She is seen with a Victorian style mirror, hat, and shirt along with multiple trade bead necklaces. The piece is signed on the lower left by the artist and has a brass title plate etched “Plunder” and signed Roy Kerswill. The painting has been professionally framed and matted. The artwork measures 10 ½” x 13 ½” and the frame measures 19 ½” x 22 ½”.

Large American Carved Cigar Store Indian Chief

Lot # 21 (Sale Order: 21 of 757)

The lot features an exceptional hand carved solid wood and hand painted Cigar Store Indian sculpture with nice vintage age. Historically, these carvings would be placed o...moreutside of tobacco outlets, signifying to passerby's that the establishment sold tobacco products. This solid wood carved mercantile Cigar Store Indian displays a patriotically painted Native American Warrior adorned with a full headdress traditionally known as a trailer war bonnet, accent fringed leggings and shirt, moccasins, a breastplate and gorget. War bonnets were traditionally worn by male leaders of the tribe who have earned great respect. Originally, a full headdress would have been worn into battle but now, they are used primarily for ceremonial purposes. This unique item displays excellent condition and measures 83" x 24" x 18". One of the larger examples we have offered for sale.

Walla Walla Prison Hitched Horsehair Bridle C 1890

For your consideration is this Walla Walla prison hitched horsehair bridle circa 1890's from Walla Walla, WA.
