Northern Plains Rawhide Warrior Ceremonial Drum

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 15 of 729)

Quantity: 225

This is an excellent stretched Rawhide Warrior’s Ceremonial Hand Drum from the Northern Plains Native American Indians, circa 1970s. The construction is very similar to d...morerums ascribed to the Lakota Sioux. Historically, hand drums have been an essential part of spiritual ceremonies for vision, power celebrations and healing. Hand drums are shallow tom toms built with a wooden frame made from bent wood or from assembled sections. The face of the drum shows the image of a large eagle, wings outstretched, while the painted image of a thundercloud with three falling bolts of lightning are below its left talons and the image of the sun with its rays extending outward is below the right talons. Made on a stretched rawhide parfleche with an intricate lacing on the rear that doubles as a hand hold during playing. The hide is stretched over a hexagonal wood frame ring. Tambourine drums are octagonal in shape. The rawhide has a rich original patina along with a nice patina on the wood frame ring, overall a nice representation of this piece's authentic Northern Plains heritage. This hand drum is in very nice condition, the colours are vibrant, the construction is tight and secure. No obvious marring noted. Measures 17" diameter, 2.25"D.*

The piece has a twine tie around its neck as well as around its waist with trade clothe, canvas or burlap skirt. Provenance: From a private museum Native American collection Paris, France. The hands of the kachina had previously been broken off, repaired then broken again and are now missing, also the tip of one foot is missing. There is some slight paint loss, which fits its early age, but other than this and the forementioned small damages, the piece is well kept. The piece measures 9.5” H by 6” W. Similar to the Hopi Palhik Mana Kachina dating to the 1920s and of a much smaller size which sold at our January 2022 sale for $1,197 (w/ bp) with this being a larger, earlier example.*
