ITALIAN MVSN MODEL 1937 DAGGER.

Lot # 3227 (Sale Order: 226 of 457)      

Very nice example of an MVSN Model 1937 dagger. The Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale (MVSN), known in English as the Voluntary Militia for National Security....more More famously referred to as the "Blackshirts" for their distinctive black uniforms, they were a paramilitary wing of the Italian National Fascist Party, who used methods of violence and intimidation against dictator Benito Mussolini's opponents. At its peak, the MVSN was a force of 351,000 before being integrated into the Royal Italian Army and disbanded in 1943. Although the MVSN was active from 1923-1943, these daggers are quite rare. The dagger features a bright, unmarked, and nickel-plated blade which leads to an aluminum handle that features a downward curved quillon and an eagle head pommel. The handle features black composition grip inserts with the obverse side featuring a brass Italian fasces emblem. The dagger is complete with its black-painted metal scabbard with brass mounts. Complete with leather hanger and displayed in case with 2 medals, including a Fascist Youth Membership Badge. CONDITION: The blade retains its bright polished sheen. Nice finish to hilt with scattered light blemishes. Composite grips remain intact and firmly secured to the handle. The scabbard retains most of its original black paint and exhibits scattered scratches. Very good. Blade Length: 7 - 3/4" Overall Length: 12"

Walnut finger groove forend, pistol grip, and stock with rubber "BRNO" recoil pad. This example is accompanied by its original box, paperwork, canvas case, sling, and cleaning tools. An additional ammo can containing 5 10-round wax sealed boxes of various Czech flares, in addition to a few loose flares, is also included. CONDITION: Excellent. As new with only a few mild handling marks. Fine mirror bright bore. Crisp mechanics. Awarded by Manchukuo (Manchuria), which was a puppet state created by Japan in northern China that ex...moreisted from 1932 until Japan's defeat in 1945. The Order of the Auspicious Clouds was created to parallel the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun in terms of merit. This example features the distinct yellow enamel sun rays that extend from a red center. Housed in its original lacquered case an complete with its neck ribbon as well as 2 boxed cross shaped rosettes. Yellow center is slightly loose but the medal presents well with preserved finish and intact enamel. Ribbon is intact with light fading. Case exhibits surface scratches and scuffs. CONDITION: Very good.

No visible maker marks on reverse, but there are what appears to be 2 faint hallmarks on reverse of pin. Pleasing patina throughout. (C) French Grand Cross of the French Legion of Honor Third Republic 1870-1940, Third Class neck award. White enamel points with green enamel wreath, hinged suspension ring. Red neck ribbon is intact with ties. Housed in a red leather wrapped case with velvet lining marked by maker on interior lid. Medal with beautiful enamel and a pleasing patina throughout. Case with wear throughout but remains intact with functioning clasp. CONDITION: All good.

AN IMPORTANT DAIREIFUKU FORMAL COURT UNIFORM.

Lot # 3236 (Sale Order: 235 of 457)      

The Daireifuku was used from 1871 into the 1940s, and was inspired by the Japanese integrating Western aesthetic into their culture. The uniform consists of a bicorne in ...morea hatbox, vest, trousers, and tail coat, executed in black wool, and lined in silk. Heavily decorated with ornate paulownia crests in mixed 7-7-7 and a 5-7-5 pattern called a gonanakiri mon, used to indicate that the uniform was for the highest ranked civilians. The sword is a smallsword with heavy gilding pierced on the half shell guard with a central paulownia crest. Blade is frosted with paulownia design and florals, and the quillion ends in a rooster head, evocative of the early court tachi used by the aristocracy. Accompanied by a red-white-and-blue striped tie. CONDITION: Good overall, with some fraying and peeling to edges, more noticeable on interior silk, with gilt wire detached or loose in some areas. Sword very good with some handling marks and rubs to scabbard, blade with the vast majority of the frosted decoration with some bubbling and oxidation. Bicorne very good with some minor feather loss and similar edge rubs as uniform; some staining and edge rubs to box, but complete. An important uniform that presents very well. PROVENANCE: Bonhams, 2017, attributed at that time to Tanaka Nobuyoshi.

Receiver fitted with an original black painted finished side mounted 4x scope numbered "12969" on the bell. Back side of mount numbered "4052". Complete with rubber eyepiece. Standard military stocks and mounts. Matching numbers observed on receiver, bolt, and nose cap. Safety knob is a replacement. A brown leather sling is also included. CONDITION: Good. Lot consists of: (A) Japanese WWII Type 90 helmet with 2nd pattern cover. The inside of the cover features the typical off-white lining with specification stamps and the ...moreoriginal owner's name. Correct style of exposed stitching which is covered toward the crown. Cover retains its original padding and tie strings. The helmet appears repainted with tan camouflage paint and crude brush strokes. Star was replaced. Helmet is stamped with Kobe Seiko (steel) arsenal "S" inside a diamond on the interior rim. The liner is relatively clean with all 3 leather liner tongues but they are missing their padding. Canvas liner tie is intact with partial canvas chinstrap is present. Painted numbers inside of rim and crown. CONDITION: Good. (B) Japanese WWII Type 90 Naval helmet with scattered remnants of green paint, missing liner. Naval Forces insignia was likely replaced. Missing Liner. The right bale has an old tag affixed that reads "SOUVENIR OF BETIO ISLAND, TARAWA ATOLL, GILBERT ISLANDS 20 NOV 1943-23 NOV 1943". Helmet is stamped with Kobe Seiko (steel) arsenal "S" inside a diamond on the interior rim and exhibits a few cracks.

Breast star exhibits a pleasing patina with traces of gilding remaining on the inner rays. Reverse is marked and complete with functioning pin. Neck with nice enamel with gilding on rays. LOT OF JAPANESE ORDER OF THE SACRED TREASURE MEDALS.

Lot # 3247 (Sale Order: 246 of 457)      

Lot consists of various examples of the Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure medals which date from the World War II era through the post-war years. There are 4 7th and ...more8th class medals (2 appear to be 7th class due to remnants of gilding and 2 appear to be 8th class, lacking gilding). The 2 7th class are cased while the 8th class medals are not. There are 3 6th Class examples, 1 cased with rosette, and 1 missing the ribbon. Also included are 2 5th Class examples, each exhibiting faint traces of gold gilding. Lastly, there is a 2nd class with rays bent inward, which was commonly done in order so the award would not slide on a uniform. All medals exhibit varying patina with some soiling to ribbons. There is enamel loss to some of the medals, including the 2nd Class breast badge which is cracking in areas due to being bent. Cases exhibit blemishes consistent with handling wear. CONDITION: Good-very good.

A nice group of Japanese military orders, medals, and other awards that are tastefully displayed in a 16" x 12" riker mount. The lot includes several examples of the Orde...morer of the Rising Sun, a few examples of the Order of the Sacred Treasure, and miscellaneous awards including a medal bar with an Order of the Sacred Treasure 7th or 8th Class, Russo-Japanese War Medal, 1914-20 First World War Medal, and medal of a life member of the Japanese Red Cross. There is also a Imperial Japanese Time Expired Soldiers League Special Member Badge, Imperial Japanese Army Heavy Machine Gun Proficiency Badge, among other awards. Most award exhibit varying degrees of patina and are missing gold wash or enamel components. Some ribbons have darkened or frayed. Nonetheless, this is a very nice offering of Japanese military awards. CONDITION: Fair-very good.
