(C) FACTORY ENGRAVED PIGEON GRADE WINCHESTER MODEL 1897 SLIDE ACTION SHOTGUN.

Lot # 2426 (Sale Order: 426 of 519)      

Circa 1904. Fitted with a blued matted rib 28" barrel with single brass bead sight. Takedown frame engraved on the right with an attractive live pigeon shoot scene with rope border. Left displays an upland game hunting scene. Additional rose and 4 leaf clover motifs engraved for good luck, as well as some additional decorative scroll. Bolt engraved "PIGEON GUN" between scrolls. A nearly identical example of this engraving pattern can be found on pages 315 and 316 of "Winchester Engraving" by Wilson. Walnut slide is checkered. Checkered round knob pistol grip stock with nice figure, ebony black diamond inlays, and early red rubber Winchester recoil pad. CONDITION: Good as restored. Gun retains nearly all of its reapplied blued finish, barring some slide wear. Slide has a 2" split running from the center screw and a few scattered marks. Stock appears lightly cleaned with only minor handling marks. Pad has largely crystalized. Bore has some orange peel and evidence of use. Fine mechanics. Finger groove forearm and point pattern checkering at the bottom. Receiver with floral engraving and wrigglework strapwork, left side with gold wire portrait of John Browning and his signature, right side with"BROWNING 2,000,000 - 64" in a lozenge. Gold washed trigger with floral engraving. Nicely fiddlebacked walnut stock with Pachmayr white line pad. With an extra barrel marked for Special Steel, 12 gauge, 3" chamber, more elaborate engraving at the shank, and a steel bead instead of ivory. CONDITION: Very good with evidence of field use throughout. Barrel with the vast majority of the factory bluing, with superficial scratches and handling marks throughout, left side of muzzle was a match of old cleaned oxidation, approximately 1" by 1". Stocks very good with some handling marks and lifting of varnish, particularly on forearm and right side of stock; one crack on forearm ahead of ejection port, approximately 1 - 1/4". Circa 2002. A nice and virtually new combination sporting/game gun with 30” nitro proofed blued mono-bloc steel barrels. Barrels are fit with ejectors, low profiled machine filed ventilated ribs. Ribs with small mid beads and larger white front bead sights. The 28 gauge barrels are built with 2 - 3/4” chambers and numbered “1” on rib near breech. The .410 barrels are fit with 3” chambers and numbered “2” on rib near breech. Both sets of barrels are choked with Beretta multi chokes and with individual forearms. Barrels read “BERETTA USA ACCK. MD” on right side of top barrel and “SPORTING BERETTA - MADE IN ITALY GARDONE V.T.”. Left side of top barrels read with “28 GA 2 3/4” – 30” and “410 GA. 3”- 30”. Bottoms of barrels with serial number and Italian proof markings. The side plated boxlock action is brush bright coin finished, with game scene and scroll engraving. “P. Beretta” is engraved at top of walls. Bottom of action reads “S 687 EL GOLD PIGEON II”, ”MADE IN ITALY”. Action built with single selective gold washed inertia trigger. Top lever with light scroll and scored. Safe slide built with barrel selector and is scored. Dark walnut stock with pistol hand grip (finely checkered), vacant golden shield, and finished with a black rubber pad. Schnable forearms with fine checkering are numbered “1” and “2” on their individual Deeley styled latch releases. Exterior iron metal with light scroll engraving. Gun lives in its blue “BERETTA” ABS case with choke wrench, extra chokes and manual. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels are excellent – as new. Action, trigger and ejectors are excellent. Manufactured circa 1918-1929 by A.H. Fox Gun company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with features including ivory bead front sight, Krupp steel barrels, single selective trigger, ejectors, and automatic trigger. Blue finish with engraved color case hardened receiver and 2-piece checkered walnut stock and forearm with added black rubber recoil pad. Engraving on frame and breech consists of coarse floral and acanthus scroll with "ANSLEY H. FOX" in a ribbon banner on left and right frame flats and vignette of 2 quail flying with a mountainous western prairie in the background on bottom of frame. Marked on barrel flats and water table with "B" grade marking. Barrel flats marked with serial number, renumbered to match, likely by the factory and "3" grade. Fitted with automatic ejector and double triggers. Case hardened frame nicely engraved with fine scroll and 4 game birds on the underside. Side plates engraved "The AJ Aubrey" with further scroll and flying fowl. Checkered walnut splinter forend. Nicely checkered pistol grip stock with hard rubber grip cap and serrated butt plate. Housed in a light brown leather wrapped case. CONDITION: Very good for its age. Strong Damascus pattern displayed on the barrels with some mild wear. Likewise strong case colors present on frame, the underside staring to silver. This is an interesting gun in that the engraved side lock action is marked "J. SQUIRES", who was in business from 1880-1892. It is now fitted to a set of 28" Nitro proof barrels that are stamped "G.E. LEWIS", also of Birmingham. We can only surmise that a previous owner took his gun to Lewis and had a pair of more modern Nitro barrels fitted to his action. Barrel numbers do not match and are multi-proofed. The action is finely engraved with exposed hammers. Also features double triggers. Checkered walnut stock with a straight grip and a gutta percha butt plate. The splinter forearm is stamped Squires and matches the frame serial number. Barrels are both choked Modified. Comes with leather case that has a broken handle. PROVENANCE: Ex. Bill Wise. CONDITION. Excellent. Gun is tight. Barrels retain 80% blue with no visible dents. Frame has turned a soft gray. Trigger guard appears re-blued. Stock is excellent with bold grain with usual impressions. Forearm has a small 1 - 1/4" sliver missing but is still with the gun. Bores are bright. Action works fine.
