(A) FINE AMERICAN MACHINE WORKS SMITH CARBINE.

Lot # 2151 (Sale Order: 151 of 519)      

Manufactured for agents Poultney and Trimble by the American Machine Works of Springfield, Massachusetts, circa 1864-1865. Smith carbines saw Civil War use with the 1st Connecticut, 11th Illinois, 1st Massachusetts, 6th and 9th Ohio, 7th and 17th Pennsylvania, and the 3rd West Virginia. This example features a standard rust blued octagonal to round barrel bearing an unknown "B" inspector marking at the breech. German silver blade front sight and ladder rear. Case hardened breech loading percussion action fit with a saddle ring and bar, and marked on the left with maker and agent information. Oil finished walnut forend retained by a single barrel band and matching walnut stock fitted with a steel carbine butt plate and marked "GP" at the wrist. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains the majority of its original fading blue, some areas drifting to patina. Action likewise has largely faded to patina. Stocks are good with scattered dings and nicks. Fine bright and crisp bore with only a few imperfections. Fine mechanics. Manufactured during the Civil War by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company. Post-War arsenal sleeved 3-groove rifled barrel with blade front sight and flip up ladder rear. Standard case hardened action without Stabler cut off. Plain walnut forend retained by a single barrel band. Very fine replacement butt stock with case hardened buttplate and magazine. CONDITION: Good. Barrel and receiver display a mottled gray patina. Lockplate and end of magazine retain significant traces of case color. Buttplate retains the vast majority of its case colors. Forend is very good with a few mild marks. Stock fits proudly and shows only a few impressions. Bore retains strong rifling with black powder oxidation. Good mechanics. This classically configured New Model 1863 features a blued round barrel, German silver blade front sight, and ladder rear. The case hardened pellet primer lock bears standard maker and patent information. Plain 2-piece walnut stocks without patch box. Iron mounts include a single barrel band, saddle ring and bar, and plain butt plate. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel blue has largely faded to a chocolate patina. Manufactured in 1852 with classic features including 7 - 1/2" half octagon to round barrel with nickel silver blade front sight and hammer notch rear sight. Aftermarket engraved with donut scroll on a cross-hatched background with "Colt's Patent" marking on frame hand engraved in a ribbon border, and accenting clamshell on top of backstrap. Replacement hammer is engraved with Gustave Young style wolf's head. Cylinder is roll marked with Texas Ranger scene. Mounted with aftermarket high grade piano finish walnut 1-piece grips. Matching serial numbers observed on rammer, wedge, barrel, cylinder, cylinder arbor, frame, trigger guard, butt, and backstrap channel on grips. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Excellent, with approximately 80% of the applied blue finish remaining and engraving crisp. Frame is turned a gray patina. Silver plating has mostly been cleaned away from brass components, which are now turning a mellow patina. Grips show no major signs of distress. Manufactured in 1858 in classic configuration with the factory addition of a carbine sight, German silver blade sight, and cut for use with shoulder stock for the United States Government. Sub-inspector marked on all major parts and marked "U.S." on frame, with inspector cartouches on both grip panels. Complete with shoulder stock serial numbered to Dragoon revolvers 16783 and 16784. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Very good, as refurbished. Rammer assembly is a replacement, barrel and rammer assembly have been chemically aged to match each other. Cylinder is a replacement. Several of the inspector markings have been refreshed after refurbishment. Trigger guard has turned a pleasing mellow patina. Grips have been lightly sanded and finish added with cartouches still visible. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is frosted with visible rifling. Stock has been heavily cleaned and is missing the tightening nut, but is overall in very good condition with no major signs of distress. (A) RARE PAIR OF VERTICAL CASED COLT MODEL 1849 POCKET PERCUSSION REVOLVERS.

Gun (A) manufactured circa 1862 with desirable 6" octagon barrel, Hartford address, brass pin front sight, 6-shot cylinder, silver plate grip straps, and 1-piece varnished walnut grips. Gun (B) was manufactured circa 1853 in similar configuration, with New York address and 5-shot cylinder. This pair is vertically cased in a very scarce blue crushed velvet lined hardwood case with accessory drawer. Another example of this casing is pictured on page 247 of "Colt's Pocket '49" by Robert Jordan, which identifies it as the only example known to the author. This additional example is accompanied by an eagle motif powder flask, Colt's Patent mold, and round balls. CONDITION: Gun (A) is near fine. Strong traces of faded original blue are retained on the barrel, the balance faded to gray patina with oxidation spots. Strong muted case colors visible on the frame. Portions of silver are retained on the trigger guard, the balance exhibiting a golden mellow patina. Markings including cylinder scene are sharp and legible. Grips are good with scattered impressions. Strong bore with a few oxidation spots. Crisp mechanics. Matching numbers observed throughout. Gun (B) is very good with an overall brown patina and some cleaned oxidation spots. Straps retain traces of silver with a cleaned brass patina. Grips have wear and scattered marks. Strong, frosted bore. Fair mechanics. Matching numbers observed throughout. Case shows some expected scuffing and wear from storage but displays well. Accessories rate good. A very scarce cased pair of Colts. Manufactured 1862. A scarce configuration with six shot cylinder, and horizontally dovetailed front sight. Engraved in the style of Gustave Young or his shop with rolling acanthus scroll on a stippled ground, with iconic dog head on lug and wolf's head hammer. Cylinder rolled with stagecoach holdup scene. One piece ivory grips. Barrel with 2 line Hartford address, "COLTS PATENT" on left side of frame, and a small "2" stamped on left side of barrel lug. Matching serial numbers on barrel assembly, frame, trigger guard, butt, and cylinder; partial numbers on rammer assembly and cylinder axle. The so-called "punch mark" that accompanies serial numbers on barrel assembly, frame, trigger guard, and butt is believed to denote factory engraving. Accompanied by some correspondence between Paul Shumaker and Edward Parish discussing the configuration of this revolver, and a copy of "Colt's Variations of the Old Model Pocket Pistol 1848 to 1872" by Shumaker. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Very good as partially refinished. Barrel with approximately 10% bluing in protected areas, most under rammer, balance a smooth gunmetal grey with some age related mossing. Frame with traces of case colors in similar protected areas such as crevice of recoil shield. Trigger guard and backstrap with the majority of silver, thinning through to brass at high edges; backstrap resilvered, probably in the period, with engraving and legends softened. Cylinder scene largely legible, some softening towards rear. Mechanically fine, bore has good rifling and mild areas of oxidation throughout. Grips are 1-piece smooth ivory. Housed in maroon lined partitioned hardwood case with brass Colts Patent mold and Eley cap tin. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Very fine. Barrel retains the vast majority of its bright factory blue with some mild edgewear and other marks. Cylinder has largely faded to gray, traces of blue present in the protected areas. Matching full or partial serial numbers observed on barrel assembly, rammer, wedge, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, and butt; barrel assembly, frame, trigger guard, and butt have the "dot" punch mark, believed to be used to indicate factory engraving. "A" observed on barrel, cylinder, and top of gripstrap; "K" on left side of trigger guard. Silver-plated brass grip strap and trigger guard. Piano varnish grips of a later date. Accompanied by a previous auction listing of this item. CONDITION: Good, retaining approximately half of the reapplied blue finish, with cold blue applied throughout. Frame with traces of case colors. Engraving is crisp. Grips with traces of silver plate throughout, approximately 10%, more in protected areas such as around the trigger guard and top of backstrap. London made iron trigger guard and backstrap, as is correct for these early purchase guns built with some leftover English parts. Manufactured in 1861 in classic Civil War martial form with 8" round barrel, German silver blade front sight, New York address, rebated cylinder, and frame cut for shoulder stock with matching steel backstrap. Brass trigger guard marked on the left "US", attributed to a postwar rebuild marking for Indian Wars period reissue. 1-piece oiled walnut grips bear a faint cartouche on the left and clear "IH(?) CO D VT / JCH" stamping on the underside. A Justin G. Hinds (also sometimes listed as "Judson" and sometimes with the middle initial "C") is listed among the rolls of Company D of the 1st vermond Cavalry. Hailing from Hannover, New Hampshire he enlisted July 29, 1864 at Windsor, Vermont. On October 7, 1864 he was captured at Columbia Furnace and died as a prisoner of war on November 16 at Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. A large binder of research, scans of original documents relating to Hinds' service, and a period cabinet card photo of a soldier, presumably Hinds, accompany this lot. Lot also includes a martial style black leather flap holster, H.A. Bingee cartridge box, and packet of Symns combustible envelope cartridges. CONDITION: Very good overall. Steel components display a dove gray patina throughout. Front strap exhibits a golden patina, cleaned at some point, and now starting to mellow. Grips are very fine with a few scattered marks. Late, circa 1873 production. Classic blued 7 - 1/2" barrel with New York address and German silver blade front sight. 6-shot cylinder rolled with a largely legible naval engagement scene. Silver plated grip straps and 1-piece varnished walnut grips. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel assembly retains the majority of its factory blue, fading along the sides. Cylinder has drifted to a brown patina. Strong case colors on frame, hammer, and loading lever with areas fading to gray patina. Traces of silver are retained on the grip straps, the balance a mellow mottled golden patina. Grips have been cleaned with an added coat of finish with scattered marks. Very good, strong and bright bore. Crisp mechanics. Wedge is stuck; however, externally visible numbers match. Single line barrel address on the top flat of the barrel, "MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. NEWARK N.J.". Matching serial numbers observed on the barrel assembly, frame, trigger guard and the backstrap. German silver half moon front sight. One piece varnished wood grips. CONDITION: This gun has turned to a very pleasing brown patina. There is traces of the silver plating on the trigger guard and the back strap. Dark bore with well-defined lands and grooves. The engraving was executed by a master engraver. Grips show some wear. A very close copy of the Smith & Wesson No. 1, this example was manufactured circa 1868 to 1873 by the American Standard Tool Company, successor to Manhattan Firearms Company. It features lovely punch dot shaded foliate scroll engraving on barrel and frame. Additional features include blued ribbed octagon barrel, German silver half moon front sight, 7-shot cylinder with partially legible rolled scene, spur trigger, silver plated brass frame, and 2-piece mother of pearl grips. Gun is engraved on the backstrap "R.J. Wick", as is slightly defaced. Also inscribed "J.B. Ayer" on the base of the left grip. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains traces of original blue in the protected areas, the balance faded to an even dove gray patina. Frame retains the vast majority of its richly toned silver, the high edges worn to mellow brass. Grips are fine with only a few tiny nicks. Bore has defined rifling and some black powder pits. Crisp mechanics. A beautiful, double-named 19th-century revolver deserving further research. (A) EXTREMELY RARE FACTORY ENGRAVED WHITNEY NAVY CONVERSION BELLY GUN WITH CARVED IVORY CENTURION GR

Manufactured around the Civil War as a percussion revolver and later converted to accept centerfire cartridges. The engraved octagon barrel has also been professionally shortened in the period into an easily concealable belly gun configuration, as was popular in the Old West. Frame is engraved with floral punch dot shaded foliate arabesque patterns with line borders, extending down the backstrap onto the butt. Although engraving was available at a cost of $5 on these revolvers, only a handful of examples are known today. This example is also fit with 2-piece ivory grips, the left panel relief carved with a centurion in profile. CONDITION: Fair. Revolver displays a worn gray patina with some cleaned oxidation spots. Grips have a warm honey patina with some areas of darkness and a section of loss at the front left toe. Screw escutcheon on the left side also frontier replaced. Strong, frosted bore. Good mechanics. A very interesting Avenging Angel Whitney with very scarce deluxe special order features. If only this revolver could talk! Finished in full nickel plate with 4 - 1/2" octagon barrel with unplugged loading lever port, New York address, small cone front sight, 5-shot rebated conversion cylinder with rolled stagecoach holdup scene, "COLTS / PATENT" marked frame, and 2-piece varnished walnut grips. Serial number "49" observed on barrel assembly, frame, trigger guard, and back strap. Cylinder arbor and loading gate are numbered "21", and the cylinder "36". Wedge is numbered. Accompanied by a larger tooled slim jim holster faintly marked marked on the belt loop. CONDITION: Very fine. Revolver retains the vast majority of its factory nickel with flaking and loss. Markings and cylinder scene are sharp and legible. Grips have some impressions and scratched, with the majority of the original varnish retained. Black powder abraded bore. Good mechanics, cylinder does not always turn when action is worked. Holster has wear to the surfaces but remains supple.
