(M) WINCHESTER MODEL 21 TRAP SHOTGUN OWNED BY FAMED TRAP SHOOTER BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN GRIER.

Lot # 1402 (Sale Order: 261 of 324)

Ordered in 1939, this Model 21 Trap was owned by legendary shooter "Cap" John Grier, as is listed on several 1940s-dated Winchester repair orders. Copies of the orders are included on Cody Records Office letterhead. John Grier was born in 1901 and enlisted in the Delaware National Guard in 1924, retiring as a Brigadier General in 1961. During World War II, he was appointed by Roosevelt to a military commission to try a pair of German spies, before returning to Delaware, where he oversaw federal resources provided to the Guard as a US property and fiscal officer. Perhaps of even more interest to the gun collector is Grier's shooting career. Among his great wins was a gold medal at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris as part of the US rifle team. Grier was a skilled trap shooter with a remarkable 99.2% average on registered targets, once hitting 837 in a row without a miss. In 1979, he was inducted as the first trap shooter into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame. Grier was also featured in a Winchester Model 24 advertisement, a copy of which is included with this lot. This trap gun owned by Grier is fitted with 32" Winchester Proof Steel barrels. Barrels have a ventilated rib, double bead sights, and ejectors. Box lock action stamped "TRAP" on the trigger plate with single selective trigger. Matching checkered walnut beavertail forend of nice figure. Checkered pistol grip stock with red rubber Old English pad. In addition to a file of research on Grier and the aforementioned documents, a set of reprint factory paperwork is also included. CONDITION: Very good as restored. Nearly all of the reapplied blued finish is retained throughout with some freckling. Forend shows mild wear. Stock has been refreshed with razor sharp recut checkering. Bright bores with moderate use. Fine mechanics. Barrel Length: 32" Chamber: 2 - 3/4" Choke: (L) Full (R) Imp Mod Drop at Comb: 1 - 3/4" Drop at Heel: 1 - 7/8" Gauge: 12 Gauge Length of Pull: 14 - 1/4" Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 21 Trap Paperwork: Research Serial Number: 14657 Weight: 7 lbs 5.2 oz

EARLY 1900S JOSEPH WINN FISKE LIFE SIZE ELK STATUE.

Lot # 1411 (Sale Order: 270 of 324)

Fantastic and seldom offered full size zinc and cast iron elk statue as found in city parks, etc. Base is marked "J.W. FISKE / 26,28 PARK PLACE / New York." The ones that were ordered primarily ended up in city parks and other public places. The Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, established in 1868, has almost a million members and more than 2000 lodges all over the country. In the early twentieth century, the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks commissioned artists, mostly on the East Coast, to create statues of elks for fountains in cities across the United States. These statues were made available to the new chapters of the Elks. Statuary of this size on the private market its scarce, as many never leave their location in public places, or were scrapped for WWI and WWII war materials drives. The original cost was $210, so few were commissioned, and even fewer survive today. Some other elks can be found in Elk's Rest Memorial, Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa, New Jew Jersey, and one at the Newburgh, New York Elk's lodge. One that Wass commissioned for the city of Reading, Pennsylvania, was in their City Park for years and was an iconic picture stop for visitors. Measuring an impressive 9 - 1/2' tall, 2 - 1/2' wide, and 6 - 1/2' long, this example has a later faux oxidized bronze finish overall. An identical Fiske elk was sold in the Sotheby's 'Important Americana' auction in New York in 2016 (lot 1575) and realized $225,000 against an estimate of $50,000 - $100,00. Included are two silver gelatin antique photos that show an elk in an unknown city park. It may be the very elk being offered, but we can't be certain. Also included is an original copy of the Sotheby's catalog from 2016 that contains the listing for another Fiske elk. CONDITION: Very good. No visible dents or fractures. Main statue is solid to base. Antlers may be later addition. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. Paperwork: Documentation
