(A) VERY INTERESTING FIRST MODEL WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 MUSKET BREVETTE.

Lot # 1320 (Sale Order: 179 of 324)

Likely of continental European origin, most likely Swiss, this remarkable rifle replicates with near exactness an early First Model Winchester 1873 musket. Fitted with an unmarked rust blued 30" round barrel, bayonet lug front sight, adjustable 800 yard graduated rear sight somewhat similar to those found on Vetterli rifles. 26" magazine tube with early style thread in plug, later style nose cap band, and a pair of standard barrel bands. Early first model style receiver with unmarked tang and highly desirable raised thumbprint mortised dust cover. Early style bushed bolt. Unpinned trigger without safety stop. Lever is of the early oval style and appears to have been case hardened. Hammer is strawed much in the Swiss style. Standard style 24 - 1/2" walnut forend and straight grip walnut buttstock with tool trap carbine style butt plate. Major components are marked with a boxed "ME" touchmark as well as the serial number "26". The Swiss initially trialed the Winchester 1866 and later the modified iron Model 1867, the direct precursor to the Winchester 1873. Although Switzerland never adopted the Winchester as a standard martial arm, these early trials were important in introducing the arms to Europe where they became increasingly popular. Although the exact origin of this well made specimen is uncertain, it appears to be a prototype, very likely created by reverse engineering a genuine Winchester. The consignor attributes its to the Vatican Papal Guard. CONDITION: Excellent for its age. Rifle retains the vast majority of its rust blue finish with only scattered handling marks, scratches, and some evidence of cleaned oxidation on the side plates. Hammer retains significant portions of faded straw. Lever and butt plate have faded to patina. Stocks are fine with the usual scattered dings and nicks. Bore is bright with strong 5 groove rifling and some mild cleaned oxidation. Crisp mechanics. An extremely interesting and attractive European Winchester. Barrel Length: 30" Caliber/Bore: .44-40? FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Unknown Model: 1873 Musket Serial Number: 26

Lot # 1323 (Sale Order: 182 of 324)

Manufactured circa 1927, this very unusual 92 is built with both carbine and rifle features. Several carbines in this configuration are known with serial numbers around this example. It is believed they were made for silver screen use, possibly part of a 100 gun order placed in 1927 for a Tim McCoy film. Most notably, it features a 20" octagonal barrel chambered in .44-40. Like other known examples, it bears both standard "WP" and oval "P" proofs. German silver blade front sight and semi-buckhorn rear. Full length magazine tube retained by a magazine tube band, as seen on rifles and small caliber carbines. A standard carbine barrel band present at the forend. Blued saddle ring receiver. Stocks are plain walnut with carbine butt plate. CONDITION: Near excellent. Rifle retains nearly all of its factory blue with some very light high edge silvering, mild flaking on the receiver, and a saddle ring ghost. Stocks are excellent, only a few handling marks present. (A) RARE AND HISTORIC COLETTE GRAVITY REPEATING HOLSTER PISTOL.

Lot # 1329 (Sale Order: 188 of 324)

Walter Hunt first patented the Rocket Ball cartridge in 1848, filling the hollow base of a Minnie ball with propellant and a cap, which would go on to be utilized in Jennings and Volcanic repeating arms. Around the same time, this same style of self contained ammunition was also developed independently by several European inventors, allowing Victor Colette to develop an interesting, rather high capacity, repeating pistol around 1852. His pistol relied on gravity rather than spring tension to push the cartridges into the chamber from an above-barrel magazine. This holster sized example features an octagon barrel marked on the underside with Colette's "VC" initials. Frame is engraved in traditional Belgian fashion with some checkered panels, florals, and open foliate scrolls, very possibly by retailer Jongen Freres, as is engraved on the underside of the frame. Pistol sports fluted walnut grips with a faceted steel grip cap. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel blue has largely faded to a brown/gray patina. Frame exhibits a cleaned silvery patina with some freckling. Grips have been sanded and reoiled, some impressions still present. Bore retains strong, fine rifling with some oxidation spots. Crisp mechanics. A very interesting early cartridge arm that represents an important step in the development of modern repeating arms. Barrel Length: 9 - 1/4" Caliber/Bore: .41 Colette FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Jongen Model: Colette Gravity Pistol Serial Number: 744
